NEMATODE COLONIZATION OF PYRITE CINDER-POLLUTED SOIL

The nematofauna was studied in the early stages of a remediation trial at an industrial site where pyrite cinders had accumulated for 40 years in a large area and were then covered with mineral soil. The cinders were contaminated with several metals and metalloids. The soil of the experimental plots was derived from the mixture of cinders with the covering soil in a 1:1 ratio. Plots were amended with manure and sown with 3 metal resistant plants: Sorghum bicolor L., Helianthus annuus L., and Arundo donax L. Objetivo: Identificar y correlacionar los factores implicados en los resultados oncológicos en términos de recidiva local y supervivencia en las neoplasias de colon sometidas a cirugía con intención curativa. Characterizing the collective personality of ant societies: aggressive colonies do not abandon their home.

Animal groups can show consistent behaviors or personalities just like solitary animals. We studied the collective behavior of Temnothorax nylanderi ant colonies, including consistency in behavior and correlations between different behavioral traits. We focused on four collective behaviors (aggression against intruders, nest relocation, removal of infected corpses and nest reconstruction) and also tested for links to the immune defense level of a colony and a fitness component (per-capita productivity). No effect of lack of wood for acorn ant colonies development

Acorn ants mostly inhabit cavities in fallen twigs and hollow acorns. Such places, e.g., dead wood, provide an attractive living resource for many groups of microorganisms, like fungi and bacteria, which can be important for ants. However, during experiments in laboratories, acorn ant colonies are typically kept without dead wood. During laboratory experi-ments, the preferences of the ant Temnothorax crassispinus for nest sites with pieces of dead wood were checked, and whether the presence of such wood influenced productivity. Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate the expression of different genes, including genes involved in cancer progression, angiogenesis and metastasis. Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) has been shown to contrast angiogenesis in vivo. TSP-1 expression levels are inversely correlated with tumor vascularity and metastasis in colon cancer. Bio-informatic statistical analysis indicated that TSP-1 is hypothetical target of miR-21, miR-182, overexpressed in CRC, and let-7i which expression is down-regulated in this tumor. Human tumors display a remarkable intratumor heterogeneity affecting clinically relevant phenotypes such as ability to metastasize or to tolerate cytotoxic drugs. Recent published data indicate that tumor derived exosomes (TDEs) can have a pivotal role in regulating tumor heterogeneity by transferring functional biomolecules between various populations of tumor cells and between tumor cells and nontumor cells with consequences for whole tumor microenvironment. In this context, our goal was to understand if exosomes derived from highly metastatic cell line may influence the behaviour of less aggressive tumor cells and the properties of endhothelium.

[EN] Colonic Drug Delivery Systems (CDDS) are especially advantageous for local treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Site-targeted drug release allows to obtain a high drug concentration in injured tissues and less systemic adverse effects, as consequence of less/null drug absorption in small intestine.
