The White Woman’s Haunted Body in Doris Lessing’s The Grass Is Singing
2012
Underpinned by an interpretative grid where the analytic categories of gender and race are interwoven, the paper contends that Doris Lessing’s first novel, The Grass Is Singing (1950), unveils and dismantles culturally-constructed inscriptions of the white female body as elaborated within the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British colonial discourses and largely reproduced at folk level. Exploring Lessing’s robust delineation of the entanglements of gendered sexuality and race-biased social constraints as active in the colonial context, the paper also suggests that the novel problematizes and recasts traditional British identity configurations from an authorial perspective which po…
Rūdolfs Blaumanis, the Dreyfus Affair and the Anglo-Boer War: Colonial difference and identity construction infin-de-siècleLatvian society
2017
This article offers an insight into the social and cultural scene in Latvia at the end of the nineteenth century. The territory of this Baltic state was then still part of the Russian Empire, divided among several of its provinces. However, this was also a period when the cultural aspirations of the rising Latvian middle class were represented by the gradual attempts to raise the self-esteem of the entire local population. The article focuses on the role that Latvian writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis (1863–1908) played in encouraging Latvians to understand themselves as a self-confident people during the fin-de-siècle period. The first part examines articles published by Blaumanis in the Latvian pre…
Droit romain et Code Noir. Quelques réflexions a posteriori
2015
In Roman times, slavery is domestic, before conquests transformed its nature. Colonial slavery is an economic exploitation based on slave trade. How do the administrators apprehend the slave’s legal status ? Does the Code noir follow local rules or Roman precedents to supervise practice, according to some expected effects on the settlers’s property ? If Roman law serves as a matrix, is it as a simple recovery or as an indirect influence ? The spirit of antique solutions is present, but it is not essential for the legal definition of "Negros". The Roman law provides a conceptual tool to understand a posteriori the inner wheels of a specific status, at the turning point between property right…
Emergence of Aspergillus fumigatus azole resistance in azole-naïve patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their homes.
2017
Azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus (ARAF) has been reported in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but has not been specifically assessed so far. Here, we evaluated ARAF prevalence in azole-naïve COPD patients and their homes, and assessed whether CYP51A mutations were similar in clinical and environmental reservoirs. Sixty respiratory samples from 41 COPD patients with acute exacerbation and environmental samples from 36 of these patient's homes were prospectively collected. A. fumigatus was detected in respiratory samples from 11 of 41 patients (27%) and in 15 of 36 domiciles (42%). Cyp51A sequencing and selection on itraconazole medium of clinical (n = 68) and e…
In vitro activities of antimicrobial agents against Candida species
1999
Objective. Antimicrobial mouthrinses may represent a valid alternative to topical antifungal agents. However, the action of antimicrobials could be affected by the different ingredients incorporated into mouthrinse products. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antifungal and fungicidal activities of antimicrobials alone. Study Design. A broth macrodilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of 4 antimicrobial agents against Candida species. Minimum fungicidal concentration was also determined. Results. All antimicrobials showed antifungal activity against all tested organisms, but cetylpyridinium chloride received significantly low…
The role of drug sequence in therapeutic selectivity of the combination of 5-fluorouracil and cis-platin.
1989
The therapeutic efficacy of 5-fluorouracil (FUra) and cis-dichlorodiamine-platinum (cis-DDP) in mice bearing transplantable leukemia and solid tumors was evaluated using different sequences of combination of these agents. The optimal sequence was cis-DDP administered 24 h after FUra. The administration of FUra at its maximally tolerated dose (MTD) followed 24 h later by low doses of cis-DDP yielded less toxicity and higher response rate against L1210 and colon 26 than the administration of these two agents in the opposite sequence or concurrently at the MTD. The sequence of administration of these two agents was not therapeutically important when the antitumor activity was evaluated against…
Montmorillonite nanodevices for the colon metronidazole delivery.
2013
The adsorption profiles of the antibiotic metronidazole (MNE) into the K10-montmorillonite (MMT-K10) clay and the subsequent release have been investigated as a function of pH and MNE/MMT-K10 ratio, in order to evaluate the potential of the MNE/MMT-K10 hybrids as controlled drug delivery system. The adsorption mechanism has been first elucidated by performing complementary equilibrium and kinetic studies and through the X-ray diffractometry (XRD) characterization of the obtained composite materials. The gathered results allowed us to propose a mechanism consisting of a multi-step pathway involving the neutral and the cationic form of the drug, which interact with different sites of the clay…
PLGA nanoparticles are effective to control the colonic release and absorption on ibuprofen.
2018
The oral controlled release (CR) formulations have become more important in recent years. Among them, the polymeric nanoparticles have been thoroughly studied during the last decades, consequently they are extensively employed for a broad range of applications and drugs. The objective of this research was to develop polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) of ibuprofen with poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) as polymer, and to test their applicability for oral CR formulations development. Different proportions of drug/polymer were employed to develop the ibuprofen NPs and their in vitro release profiles were analysed. The in situ segmental permeability of ibuprofen was tested in Wistar rat and demon…
Development of an ion-pair to improve the colon permeability of a low permeability drug: Atenolol.
2016
Abstract To ensure the optimal performance of oral controlled release formulations, drug colon permeability is one of the critical parameters. Consequently developing this kind of formulations for low permeability molecules requires strategies to increase their ability to cross the colonic membrane. The objective of this work is to show if an ion-pair formation can improve the colon permeability of atenolol as a low permeability drug model. Two counter ions have been tested: brilliant blue and bromophenol blue. The Distribution coefficients at pH 7.00 (DpH7) of atenolol, atenolol + brilliant blue and atenolol + bromophenol blue were experimentally determined in n-octanol. Moreover, the colo…
