Non-breeding waterbirds benefit from protected areas when adjusting their distribution to climate warming
2021
AbstractClimate warming is driving changes in species distributions, although many species show a so-called climatic debt, where their range shifts lag behind the fast shift in temperature isoclines. Protected areas (PAs) may impact the rate of distribution changes both positively and negatively. At the cold edges of species distributions, PAs can facilitate species distribution changes by increasing the colonization required for distribution change. At the warm edges, PAs can mitigate the loss of species, by reducing the local extinction of vulnerable species. To assess the importance of PAs to affect species distribution change, we evaluated the changes in a non-breeding waterbird communi…
Farmland versus forest: comparing changes in Odonata species composition in western and eastern Sweden
2013
Despite the loss of natural ecosystems in the developed world dur- ing the past millennia, anthropogenic landscapes still sustain much biodiversity. Our question was, whether ten year changes in regional Odonata faunas are comparable between farmland and forested areas, or if the species pool of farm- land areas respond in other ways than that of forest. 2. We used data of dragonfly larvae collected from 16 lakes in a farmland area in south-western Sweden in the years 2002 and 2011/12, and compared these to data from 34 lakes in a forest area in south-eastern Sweden in the years 1996 and 2006. 3. The species-richness in the agricultural region increased by 17% but decreased by 13% in the fo…
The genetic ghost of an invasion past: colonization and extinction revealed by historical hybridization inSenecio
2011
Hybridization is an important evolutionary factor in the diversification of many plant and animal species. Of particular interest is that historical hybridization resulting in the origin of new species or introgressants has occurred between species now geographically separated by great distances. Here, we report that Senecio massaicus, a tetraploid species native to Morocco and the Canary Islands, contains genetic material of two distinct, geographically separated lineages: a Mediterranean lineage and a mainly southern African lineage. A time-calibrated internal transcribed spacer phylogeny indicates that the hybridization event took place up to 6.18 Ma. Because the southern African lineage…
Strategies for accelerating ant colony optimization algorithms on graphical processing units
2007
Ant colony optimization (ACO) is being used to solve many combinatorial problems. However, existing implementations fail to solve large instances of problems effectively. In this paper we propose two ACO implementations that use graphical processing units to support the needed computation. We also provide experimental results by solving several instances of the well-known orienteering problem to show their features, emphasizing the good properties that make these implementations extremely competitive versus parallel approaches.
The Invisible Violence of Celebrity Humanitarianism: Soft Images and Hard Words in the Making and Unmaking of Africa
2009
Through their actions to eliminate extreme poverty and preventable diseases in Africa, Irish musicians Robert (Bob) Geldof and Bono (Paul David Hewson) today form a visible and celebrated centre in the world of humanitarianism as political activists,' celebrity diplomats,' global Samaritans,' men who, to quote former World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, rock the establishment' (TIME 13.11.2006). Their contemporary calls to make poverty history' in Africa are so widely repeated and commonsensical that questions about the exceptionality of this humanitarian action itself rarely arise. In fact, despite the increasing visibility of celebrity humanitarianism, no research on their representa…
Vinorelbine and 5-fluorouracil bolus and/or continuous venous infusion plus levofolinic acid as second-line chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer…
2006
Background: This retrospective study evaluated the activity and toxicity profile of a regimen of vinorelbine and 5-fluorouracil with levofolinic acid, given to a large series of patients with recurrent or refractory metastatic breast cancer after first-line chemotherapy. Patients and Methods: Overall, 286 evaluable patients were included in the analysis. Two chemotherapy schedules were reviewed: a) the bolus regimen consisted of levofolinic acid 100 mg/m(2) and 5-fluorouracil 375 mg/m(2) both administered i.v. on days 1,2 and 3, plus vinorelbine 25 mg/m(2) i.v. bolus on days I and 8 every 3 weeks; b) the infusional regimen of levofolinic acid 100 mg/m(2) given as a 2-hour infusion, followed…
Fanon, “Profeta del Terzo Mondo unitario”, e la “crisi” dell’antropologia
2018
The essay is inspired by the works of Frantz Fanon, Martinican psychiatrist and revolutionary man, prematurely disappeared in 1961, who became, in Italy too, between the years 1968 and 1970, an icon of the youth protest movement, of the anti-racist organizations and of the liberation movements. His short but intense life developed between a theoretic production (on the psychiatry of the colonised subject and on racism) and his personal political commitment for the liberation of colonized countries. He supported, and became its spokesman, the Algerian National Liberation Front during the Algerian War. The recent re-printing of some of his works and the large quantity of foreign articles publ…
Gaspare Ambrosini. Dal fascismo all’invenzione dell’autonomia siciliana
2018
This work traces the work of Gaspare Ambrosini (1886-1985) along three different ones Italian political systems of the twentieth century: liberal, fascist and republican. In each of these three epochs, Ambrosini played a leading role not only from the point of view of intellectual reflection and of the academic profession, but above all in that of militant political commitment. His is the first innovative reflection on the birth of the system of mass parties after the introduction of suffrage universal (male) immediately after the great war; his is the elaboration of the one-party system fascist; his is the creation of the first systematization of imperial and racist theories after the conq…
