The colovescical fistula in diverticular disease: Laparoscopic approach in two different cases

Highlights • The colovescical fistula is one of the complications of diverticular disease. • It can cause typical symptoms like pneumaturia and fecaluria affecting the quality of life and sometimes leading to death, usually secondary to sepsis. • We studied two patients with clinical, radiological and endoscopic diagnosis of colovescical fistula as a consequence of diverticular disease. • We performed a totally laparoscopic treatment with colonic resection and closure of the fistula with intracorporeal sutures. • The presence of a colovescical fistula significantly increases the difficult of the laparoscopic colonic resection.

ABSTRACT Three hundred patients were enrolled in a double-blind, randomized, controlled study designed to investigate the ability of supplemental perioperative oxygen to reduce wound infection. Aim  Intraoperative peripheral nerve injury can have permanent neurological consequences. Its incidence is not known and varies according to the location and the surgical specialty. This study was a prospective analysis of intraoperative peripheral nerve injury as a complication of abdominal colorectal surgery. Method  All patients who underwent major colorectal abdominal surgery in our Colorectal Unit between 1996 and 2009 were analyzed. Data on nerve injury were prospectively collected. Rectal stump washout with cytolytic agents is recommended and usually performed during anterior rectal or rectosigmoid resection. Tadpole of Atelopus franciscus from French Guyana, with Comments on Other Larvae of the Genus (Anura: Bufonidae)

The tadpole of Atelopus franciscus from French Guyana is described. It resembles other larvae of the genus, especially those displaying a color pattern of symmetrical light marks. Among them, A. franciscus is most similar to those tadpoles having submarginal papillae (i.e., Atelopus balios, Atelopus flavescens, Atelopus nanay, Atelopus tricolor). The tadpole of A. franciscus shares several similarities with the larva of A. flavescens from French Guyana but differs from it by being smaller in size and in certain measurement. The phylogenetic relevance of tadpole characters in Atelopus is discussed, including body proportions, submarginal papillae, length of upper beak.

Accessing the gluonic structure of light nuclei at a future electron-ion collider

We show how exclusive vector meson production off light ions can be used to probe the spatial distribution of small-$x$ gluons in the deuteron and $^3$He wave functions. In particular, we demonstrate how short range repulsive nucleon-nucleon interactions affect the predicted coherent $J/\Psi$ production spectra. Fluctuations of the nucleon substructure are shown to have a significant effect on the incoherent cross section above $|t|\gtrsim 0.2\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$. Both leptin and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are growth and angiogenic cytokines that are upregulated in different types of cancer and have been implicated in neoplastic progression. Here we investigated the molecular mechanism by which leptin and VEGF expression are regulated in colon cancer by epidermal growth factor (EGF).
