Improved camouflage through ontogenetic colour change confers reduced detection risk in shore crabs

Supplementary data to: Context-dependent coloration of prey and predator decision making in contrasting light environments

A big question in behavioural ecology is what drives diversity of colour signals. The dataset covers the testing of the context-dependent predator selection on prey coloration. In the first experiment, detectability of artificial visual stimuli to blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) was tested by manipulating stimulus luminance and chromatic context of the background. In the second experiment, the effect of two light environments on the survival of aposematic, colour polymorphic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) was tested. Supersymmetric technicolor

In this thesis, we consider a supersymmetrized version of the Standard Model extended with a technicolor sector. We specialize in the regime of the model in which the technicolor sector is fully responsible of the electroweak symmetry breaking and the natural elementary Higgses of the supersymmetric model only transmit the breaking to the Standard Model fermions, thereby giving them masses. In particular, we consider the vacuum structure of the effective theory, find it to be different to that of a mere technicolor model and study the contributions of the new sector to the oblique electroweak parameters. Relative to the current experimental limits, we find the model viable.

Iron and pH regulating the photochemical mineralization of dissolved organic carbon

Solar radiation mineralizes dissolved organic matter (DOM) to dissolved inorganic carbon through photochemical reactions (DIC photoproduction) that are influenced by iron (Fe) and pH. This study addressed as to what extent Fe contributes to the optical properties of the chromophoric DOM (CDOM) and DIC photoproduction at different pH values. We created the associations of Fe and DOM (Fe-DOM) that cover the range of loadings of Fe on DOM and pH values found in freshwaters. The introduced Fe enhanced the light absorption by CDOM independent of pH. Simulated solar irradiation decreased the light absorption by CDOM (i.e., caused photobleaching).
