Modulated neural processing of Western harmony in folk musicians
2013
A chord deviating from the conventions of Western tonal music elicits an early right anterior negativity (ERAN) in inferofrontal brain regions. Here, we tested whether the ERAN is modulated by expertise in more than one music culture, as typical of folk musicians. Finnish folk musicians and nonmusicians participated in electroencephalography recordings. The cadences consisted of seven chords. In incongruous cadences, the third, fifth, or seventh chord was a Neapolitan. The ERAN to the Neapolitans was enhanced in folk musicians compared to nonmusicians. Folk musicians showed an enhanced P3a for the ending Neapolitan. The Neapolitan at the fifth position was perceived differently and elicited…
Understanding color vision, with comments on mind and matter
2012
Much is known about the mental and physical aspects of color vision. Color vision, therefore, is a paradigm well suited for the discussion of the relationship between mind and matter. The aim of the present chapter is to support the proposition that mental affairs cannot be adequately understood if their neurobiological aspects are neglected. Although it is possible to focus on fundamental problems of general relevance when discussing mind and matter, this chapter will deal with specific observations rather than general issues. The possibility of generalizations derived from empirical results is always limited. Provided the conditions under which these observations were made can be confirme…
Structural problems for the renewal of planning styles: the spanish case1
2005
This article first presents a historical review of Spain's involvement in the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP) preparation process to determine whether ESDP guidelines are different from, contrary to or in harmony with the interests of Spanish proposals. Particular attention is paid to the priority lines and territorial objectives of the Spanish delegation and its emphasis in substantive issues related to cohesion, and linking spatial planning with European Union (EU) funding. If, as the network paradigm maintains, spatial development is not possible without new methods of governance, our work has to focus on two related questions. The first question regards the evolution and…
Vascular Microarchitecture of Murine Colitis-Associated Lymphoid Angiogenesis
2009
In permissive tissues, such as the gut and synovium, chronic inflammation can result in the ectopic development of anatomic structures that resemble lymph nodes. These inflammation-induced structures, termed lymphoid neogenesis or tertiary lymphoid organs, may reflect differential stromal responsiveness to the process of lymphoid neogenesis. To investigate the structural reorganization of the microcirculation involved in colonic lymphoid neogenesis, we studied a murine model of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. Standard 2-dimensional histology demonstrated both submucosal and intramucosal lymphoid structures in DSS-induced colitis. A spatial frequency analysis of serial histolog…
Improving color correction across camera and illumination changes by contextual sample selection
2012
International audience; In many tasks of machine vision applications, it is important that recorded colors remain constant, in the real world scene, even under changes of the illuminants and the cameras. Contrary to the human vision system, a machine vision system exhibits inadequate adaptability to the variation of lighting conditions. Automatic white bal- ance control available in commercial cameras is not sufficient to pro- vide reproducible color classification. We address this problem of color constancy on a large image database acquired with varying digi- tal cameras and lighting conditions. A device-independent color repre- sentation may be obtained by applying a chromatic adaptation…

The Colour Plan of Egadi Islands
2018
The Egadi Islands, at the western end of Sicily, preserve a peculiar architectural and environmental heritage. The work of people – related to tuna fishing, stone extraction and agriculture – has created, over time, an exceptional landscape. The nature, colour and texture of the local stone have given shape to a traditional architecture that, today, risks to disappear and to be replaced by new anonymous buildings. Furthermore, the pressure of tourism threatens to damage this delicate balance established, over centuries, between people and environment. Therefore, the Local Administration decided to adopt a Colour Plan to manage the inevitable processes of territorial transformations. The Arc…
Spatio-temporal saliency detection in dynamic scenes using color and texture features
2014
Visual saliency is an important research topic in the field of computer vision due to its numerouspossible applications. It helps to focus on regions of interest instead of processingthe whole image or video data. Detecting visual saliency in still images has been widelyaddressed in literature with several formulations. However, visual saliency detection invideos has attracted little attention, and is a more challenging task due to additional temporalinformation. Indeed, a video contains strong spatio-temporal correlation betweenthe regions of consecutive frames, and, furthermore, motion of foreground objects dramaticallychanges the importance of the objects in a scene. The main objective o…
Mathematical Morphology for Color Images: An Image-Dependent Approach
2012
This paper proposes one possibility to generalize the morphological operations (particularly, dilation, erosion, opening, and closing) to color images. First, properties of a desirable generalization are stated and a brief review is done on former approaches. Then, the method is explained, which is based on a total ordering of the colors in an image induced by its color histogram; this is valid for just one image and may present problems in smoothly coloured images. To solve these drawbacks a refinement consisting of smoothing the histogram and using a joint histogram of several images is presented. Results of applying the so-defined morphological operations on several sets of images are sh…
