Highly efficient separation of amines by electrokinetic chromatography using resorcarene-octacarboxylic acids as pseudo-stationary phases
1998
Abstract Resorcarene-octacarboxylic acids, macrocyclic molecules built up by four alkylidene-bridged resorcinol units, were synthesized and used as pseudostationary phases in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). Resorcarenes provide a stable structure and good solubility in electrolytes even with organic modifiers. The high electrophoretic mobility of the resorcarene-octacarboxylic acids introduced here as pseudostationary phases is based on the eight partly deprotonated carboxylic groups. This offers a broad migration time window, which is the main parameter for the resolution of peaks. From three compounds with different alkyl chain lengths (C 1 , C 5 , C 11 ), the C 11 -resorcarene-octa-…

Adhesive papillae ofAscidia malacaswimming larvae: investigations on their sensory function
1999
Summary Swimming larvae of Ascidia malaca bear, in the anterior region of cephalenteron, three adhesive papillae through which they can attach to a substratum prior to metamorphosis. The ultrastructural investigations described in the present work have mainly revealed the presence of three cell types constituting the papillae: (a) collocytes, (b) axial columnar cells, (c) sensory cells. Collocytes, whose ultrastructure is typical of secretory cells, form the adhesive secretion. The ultrastructural observations of the axial columnar cells are insufficient to explain their function. Probably this cell type plays a supporting role though some sensory function cannot be excluded due to the pres…
Experimental results of RC columns strengthnened with Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Mortars
2012
The structural behaviour of reinforced concrete columns strengthened with a system made up of fibre nets embedded in an inorganic stabilized cementitious matrix was investigated. Specimens with circular and square cross-section were cast and subjected to monotonic uniaxial compression to investigate the efficiency of a Polypara-phenylene-benzo-bisthiazole (PBO) Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Mortars (FRCM) system in increasing both carrying capacity and ductility. The experimental results show that confinement with PBO fibre produced a noticeable increment in strength and ductility, though the low mechanical ratios of fibre considered were not always able to ensure hardening behaviour up to …

The subplate and early cortical circuits.
2010
The developing mammalian cerebral cortex contains a distinct class of cells, subplate neurons (SPns), that play an important role during early development. SPns are the first neurons to be generated in the cerebral cortex, they reside in the cortical white matter, and they are the first to mature physiologically. SPns receive thalamic and neuromodulatory inputs and project into the developing cortical plate, mostly to layer 4. Thus SPns form one of the first functional cortical circuits and are required to relay early oscillatory activity into the developing cortical plate. Pathophysiological impairment or removal of SPns profoundly affects functional cortical development. SPn removal in v…
