Depression and physical health multimorbidity: primary data and country-wide meta-analysis of population data from 190 593 people across 43 low- and …
2017
BackgroundDespite the known heightened risk and burden of various somatic diseases in people with depression, very little is known about physical health multimorbidity (i.e. two or more physical health co-morbidities) in individuals with depression. This study explored physical health multimorbidity in people with clinical depression, subsyndromal depression and brief depressive episode across 43 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).MethodCross-sectional, community-based data on 190 593 individuals from 43 LMICs recruited via the World Health Survey were analysed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to assess the association between depression and physical multimorbidity…
Association of vascular risk factors with cervical artery dissection and ischemic stroke in young adults.
2011
Background— Little is known about the risk factors for cervical artery dissection (CEAD), a major cause of ischemic stroke (IS) in young adults. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity are important risk factors for IS. However, their specific role in CEAD is poorly investigated. Our aim was to compare the prevalence of vascular risk factors in CEAD patients versus referents and patients who suffered an IS of a cause other than CEAD (non-CEAD IS) in the multicenter Cervical Artery Dissection and Ischemic Stroke Patients (CADISP) study. Methods and Results— The study sample comprised 690 CEAD patients (mean age, 44.2±9.9 years; 43.9% women), 556 patients …
Perceived Stress and Its Relationship with Chronic Medical Conditions and Multimorbidity among 229,293 Community-Dwelling Adults in 44 Low- and Middl…
2017
In this study, we assessed the association of chronic medical conditions and multimorbidity with perceived stress among community-dwelling adults in 44 low- and middle-income countries. Data from the World Health Survey (2002-2004), including 229,293 adults, were analyzed. A perceived stress score (range, 0 (lowest stress)-100 (highest stress)) was computed on the basis of 2 questions from the Perceived Stress Scale. Eleven chronic conditions were assessed.Multivariable linear regression analyses were conducted to explore the associations. All chronic conditions were associated with significantly higher mean perceived stress scores, with the exception of edentulism. The associations were pa…
Macrophage Activation Syndrome in Patients Affected by Adult-onset Still Disease: Analysis of Survival Rates and Predictive Factors in the Gruppo Ita…
2018
Objective.Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a reactive form of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, which can complicate adult-onset Still disease (AOSD). We investigated AOSD clinical features at the time of diagnosis, to assess predictors of MAS occurrence. Further, we analyzed the outcomes of patients with AOSD who experience MAS.Methods.Patients with AOSD admitted to any Gruppo Italiano di Ricerca in Reumatologia Clinica e Sperimentale center were retrospectively analyzed for features typical of AOSD, MAS occurrence, and their survival rate.Results.Of 119 patients with AOSD, 17 experienced MAS (12 at admission and 5 during followup). Twelve patients with MAS at first admission diff…
Efficacy of Nonpharmacological Treatments on Comorbid Internalizing Symptoms of Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Meta-Analytic…
2019
Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly comorbid in adulthood. This meta-analysis was aimed at ascertaining the efficacy of different psychotherapies in improving comorbid internalizing symptoms in adults with ADHD. Method: Twenty randomized controlled trials and 12 uncontrolled pretest–posttest studies were included and combined using the inverse variance method. Risk of bias and heterogeneity assessment and moderator analyses were performed. Results: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) improved quality of life (QoL), emotional dysregulation (ED), depression, and anxiety symptoms, particularly at follow-up, which was predicted by core symptoms reduction. A sig…
Study of Obsessive Compulsive Beliefs: Relationship with Eating Disorders
2011
Background: The relationship between Eating Disorders (ED) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has been extensively studied in the last few years. However, little effort has been devoted to studying the link between these disorders with regard to their distorted beliefs. Aims: The first objective of the study was to analyze the differences in OCD-related beliefs among ED subtypes and the general population, controlling for age, Body Mass Index, and obsessionality. The second objective was to explore which OCD beliefs explain ED symptomatology. Method: Seventy-nine ED patients without OCD comorbidity, divided into diagnostic subtypes, and 50 community participants completed the Obsessive…
Clinical Recognition and Management of Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
1996
Adults with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are a new phenomenon to many health care providers. While increasing evidence indicates children with ADD/ADHD can have persistent problems into adulthood, the significance and management of these disorders for adults are poorly understood. Studies of adults are confounded by frequent comorbidity with other conditions and by retrospective diagnosis of childhood ADD/ADHD. Research studies of pharmacologic interventions do not indicate a clear pattern of efficacy and safety for any drug class. Pharmacologic treatment of adults with ADD/ADHD is often guided by clinical experience. Efficacy of treat…
PCOS: metabolic impact and long-term management.
2012
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent endocrinopathy in women, affecting up to 10% of those in reproductive age. Furthermore, PCOS presents a lifetime risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS have increased cardiovascular risk; however, the risk is not the same in all patients and it is necessary to assess an individual risk profile. There is a discrepancy between increased cardiovascular risk at young age and postmenopausal number of cardiovascular events, probablu depending on changes in androgen ovarian function after the forties. However, changes with age of metabolic profile in women with PCOS have not been studied yet an…
Sleep during the third trimester of pregnancy: the role of depression and anxiety
2015
Depression has been associated with sleep disturbances in pregnancy; however, no previous research has controlled the possible confounding effect of anxiety on this association. This study aims to analyze the effect of depression on sleep during the third trimester of pregnancy controlling for anxiety. The sample was composed by 143 depressed (n = 77) and non-depressed (n = 66) pregnant women who completed measures of depression, anxiety, and sleep. Differences between groups in sleep controlling for anxiety were found. Depressed pregnant women present higher number of nocturnal awakenings and spent more hours trying falling asleep during the night and the entire 24 h period. Present findin…
The Impact of Physical, Psychological, and Sexual Intimate Male Partner Violence on Women's Mental Health: Depressive Symptoms, Posttraumatic Stress …
2006
Objective: This study aimed to determine the impact of lifetime physical, psychological, and sexual intimate male partner violence (IPV) on the mental health of women, after controlling for the contribution of lifetime victimization. The comorbidity of depressive symptoms and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their relation to state anxiety and suicide were also assessed. Methods: Physically/psychologically (n 75) and psychologically abused women (n 55) were compared with nonabused control women (n 52). Information about sociodemographic characteristics, lifetime victimization, and mental health status (depressive and state anxiety symptoms, PTSD, and suicide) was obtained through fa…
