Problem-based learning versus lectures : comparison of academic results and time devoted by teachers in a course on Dentistry in Special Patients

2008

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching-learning technique centred on the complete development of the student. It has been successfully implemented in several universities, notably in the health sciences. The process of creating the European Higher Education Area, initiated in Bologna, encourages European universities to use new methodologies in the teaching-learning process, including PBL. Our objectives were to analyze the results obtained by using PBL with fifth-year Dentistry students. We made a comparison of academic results between students receiving lectures and PBL participants, and assessment of differences between them in the time devoted to tasks by students and teachers. PBL …

Diverse histories, common ground and a shared future:the education of career guidance and counselling professionals in the Nordic countries

2019

The development of education programmes in career guidance and counseling (CGC) has followed different paths among the various Nordic countries. Ten CGC programmes in Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden were evaluated against the NICE curricular model. The results show that all NICE core competences are represented in the curricula. However, there is greater focus in some programmes on developing competences for individual career guidance, than on developing competences for working at organisational and societal levels. Implications for the cooperation and professionalisation of CGC within the Nordic countries are discussed as well as limitations of the NICE model. Keywo…

Given the documented decline in levels of physical activity in early adolescence, promoting physical activity in young people is a priority for health promotion. School physical education (PE) is an important existing network in which participation in physical activity beyond school can be promoted to the captive young people. The objective of current article is to present the protocol for a PE teacher-delivered theory-based trial to promote secondary school students’ participation in physical activity out-of-school contexts. The intervention will be guided by the trans-contextual model explaining the processes by which PE teachers’ support for autonomous motivation in the classroom promote…

2019

Across the world, youth sports clubs are prominent and the main opportunity for engaging children and youth in physical activities. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of sports club participation on actual and perceived motor competences, achievement goal perspectives, and perceptions of school physical education among Finnish third-grade children. Participants were 114 girls and 100 boys (N = 214). All children were 10-years-old, or they would turn 10-years-old during the year of data collection. The participants, based on their involvement or non-involvement in their local sports clubs, fit into four subgroups. The subgroupings were ‘never’ participated in a s…

Expertise and Skill in Minimally Invasive Surgery

2009

New attitudes to medical ethics and demands for efficiency have brought increased attention to surgical skills and training. It is important to characterize the expertise and skill involved in the multidimensional surgical profession. At a time of change, there is a need to discuss the nature of surgical expertise, and also the prospects for resident training, with special reference to new minimally invasive techniques (MIS). In this paper, we selectively review knowledge on surgical expertise and the specific demands placed on a skilled MIS surgeon. In addition, the review contains a selection of studies from those areas that have been seen as important for the future of training in surge…

Spanish Curriculum in Cariology for undergraduate dental students: Proceedings and consensus.

2021

INTRODUCTION Cariology is today a broad-based discipline and in the Spanish university teaching field, all this knowledge is not unified in a curriculum.
