Low Complexity Image Compression using Pruned 8-point DCT Approximation in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks

2017

International audience; Since the transmission of the uncompressed image in the context of wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) consumes less energy than transmitting the compressed image, developing energy-aware compression algorithms are mandatory to extend the camera node's lifetime and thereby the whole network lifetime. The present paper studies a low-complexity image compression algorithm in the context of WVSNs. This algorithm consists of applying a pruning approach on a DCT approximation transform. The scheme is investigated in terms of computation cycles, processing time, energy consumption and image quality. Experimental works are conducted using the Atmel Atmega128 processor o…

Complement genetics: biological implications of polymorphisms and deficiencies

1999

Abstract Complement (C) proteins form a highly complex and important humoral host immune defence system. A recent meeting**The VII Complement Genetics Workshop and Conference was held at Mainz, Germany, on 21–23 May 1998. addressed the role of genetic studies of C components and its regulators with respect to evolution, function and human disease.

A note on symmetry reduction for circular traveling tournament problems

2011

Abstract The traveling tournament problem (TTP) consists of finding a distance-minimal double round-robin tournament where the number of consecutive breaks is bounded. Easton et al. (2001) introduced the so-called circular TTP instances, where venues of teams are located on a circle. The distance between neighboring venues is one, so that the distance between any pair of teams is the distance on the circle. It is empirically proved that these instances are very hard to solve due to the inherent symmetry. This note presents new ideas to cut off essentially identical parts of the solution space. Enumerative solution approaches, e.g. relying on branch-and-bound, benefit from this reduction. We…

Functional analysis of the classical, alternative, and MBL pathways of the complement system: standardization and validation of a simple ELISA.

2004

Primary defence against invading microorganisms depends on a functional innate immune system and the complement system plays a major role in such immunity. Deficiencies in one of the components of the complement system can cause severe and recurrent infections, systemic diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and renal disease. Screening for complement deficiencies in the classical or alternative complement pathways has mainly been performed by haemolytic assays. Here, we describe a simple ELISA-based format for the evaluation of three pathways of complement activation. The assays are based on specific coatings for each pathway in combination with specific buffer systems. We ha…

Electrocatalytic reduction of dioxygen to water by tren-capped porphyrins, functional models of cytochrome c oxidase

1999

International audience; Two different tren-capped porphyrins—in which the two metals, iron and copper, are more or less off-centered—are shown to be efficient catalysts for the reduction of O2 to H2O; surprisingly, their iron-only complexes are shown to be even more effective 4e- catalysts when adsorbed on a graphiteelectrode.

POSTER: Optimizing scientific file I/O patterns using advice based knowledge

2014

Before us, other works have used data prefetching to boost applications performance [1]–[8]. Our approach differs from these works since we do not rely on precise I/O pattern information to predict and prefetch every chunck of data in advance. Instead we use data prefetching to group many small requests in a few big ones, improving applications performance and utilization of the whole storage system. Moreover, we provide the infrastructure that enables users to access file system specific interfaces for guided I/O without modifying applications and hiding the intrinsic complexity that such interfaces introduce.

Digital slicing of 3D scenes by Fourier filtering of integral images

2008

We present a novel technique to extract depth information from 3D scenes recorded using an Integral Imaging system. The technique exploits the periodic structure of the recorded integral image to implement a Fourier-domain filtering algorithm. A proper projection of the filtered integral image permits reconstruction of different planes that constitute the 3D scene. The main feature of our method is that the Fourier-domain filtering allows the reduction of out-of-focus information, providing the InI system with real optical sectioning capacity.

Reconfigurable electrical interconnection strategies for photovoltaic arrays: A review

2014

Non-uniform irradiance significantly decreases the power delivered by solar photovoltaic arrays. A promising technique for compensating these power losses relies on dynamically reconfiguring the electrical connections between photovoltaic modules. This paper presents the current state-of-the-art strategies for photovoltaic array reconfiguration in order to increase the power output under partial shading and mismatch conditions. The different approaches have been compared in terms of effectiveness of the control algorithms, monitored electrical and environmental variables, overall hardware complexity and specific features of each solution. Finally, the most challenging aspects of the reconfi…
