Many biological attachment devices of insects, spiders and geckos consist of arrays of hairs (setae), which are terminated by contact elements of different shapes. However, the most frequently observed shape is a thin plate-like spatula. In spite of a rather wide range of sizes, most spatulae of different animals are not uniform, but rather possess a gradient in thickness and width. Here we show that the spatulae of insects and geckos become gradually thinner and wider approaching the end. The capability of UVM-7 silicas to work as supports for drug storage and delivery is investigated using ibuprofen as a model. UVM-7 silicas are surfactant-assisted synthesised mesoporous materials displaying a characteristic bimodal pore architecture related to their nanoparticulate texture. Strict control of the drug-charge protocol allows the achievement of high ibuprofen loads, not only because of the availability of intra-nanoparticle mesopores and large textural voids, but also owing to the decrease in pore-blocking effects (with regard to related unimodal mesoporous materials such as MCM-41) achieved through the shortening of the mesopore length. Age is known to affect prefrontal brain structure and executive functioning in healthy older adults, patients with neurodegenerative conditions and TBI. Yet, no studies appear to have systematically investigated the effect of age on cognitive performance in patients with focal lesions. We investigated the effect of age on the cognitive performance of a large sample of tumour and stroke patients with focal unilateral, frontal (n=68), or non-frontal lesions (n=45) and healthy controls (n=52). The composite face effect (CFE) is recognized as a hallmark for holistic face processing, but our knowledge remains sparse about its cognitive and neural loci. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging with independent localizer and complete composite face task, we here investigated its neural-behavioral correspondence within face processing and attention networks. Complementing classical comparisons, we adopted a dimensional reduction approach to explore the core cognitive constructs of the behavioral CFE measurement. International audience; The development of children's ability to recognize facial emotions and the role of configural information in this development were investigated. In the study, 100 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-year-olds and 26 adults needed to recognize the emotion displayed by upright and upside-down faces. The same participants needed to recognize the emotion displayed by the top half of an upright or upside-down face that was or was not aligned with a bottom half that displayed another emotion. Effects of combined hand-arm vibration and cold on skin temperature

Under laboratory conditions 14 healthy male subjects were exposed to hand-arm vibration (ahzw = 6.3 m/s2) at different air temperatures (5 degrees, 12 degrees, 18 degrees and 25 degrees C). Static load (grip force 15 N, push force 40 N) was kept constant. Finger tip temperature as an indirect criterion of the peripheral blood circulation was measured. As expected, low air temperatures (5 degrees, 12 degrees and 18 degrees C) cause a strong decrease of skin temperature. Under additional stress of vibration connected with static load, a further decrease of the mean skin temperature was noted.
