Light-Fueled, Spatiotemporal Modulation of Mechanical Properties and Rapid Self-Healing of Graphene-Doped Supramolecular Elastomers

2017

Gaining spatially resolved control over the mechanical properties of materials in a remote, programmable, and fast-responding way is a great challenge toward the design of adaptive structural and functional materials. Reversible, temperature-sensitive systems, such as polymers equipped with supramolecular units, are a good model system to gain detailed information and target large-scale property changes by exploiting reversible crosslinking scenarios. Here, it is demonstrated that coassembled elastomers based on polyglycidols functionalized with complementary cyanuric acid and diaminotriazine hydrogen bonding couples can be remotely modulated in their mechanical properties by spatially conf…

Numerical model for composite material with polymer matrix reinforced by carbon nanotubes

2008

Due to the high stiffness and strength, as well as their ability to act as conductors, carbon nanotubes are under intense investigation as fillers in polymeric materials. The nature of the carbon nanotube/polymer bonding and the curvature of the carbon nanotubes within the polymer have arisen as particular factors in the efficacy of the carbon nanotubes to actually provide any enhanced stiffness or strength to the nanocomposite. Here the effects of carbon nanotube curvature and interface interaction with the matrix on the nanocomposite stiffness are investigated using nanomechanical analysis. In particular, the effects of poor bonding and thus poor shear lag load transfer to the carbon nano…

A numerical-analytical model for the characterization of composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes

2010

A mixed model, numerical-analytical, is presented that allows one to predict the elastic properties of carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymer composites containing a random distribution of CNTs, while taking account of the curvature that they show when immersed in the polymer. This hybrid approach is a significant advance over micromechanical modeling and can be applied to all nanostructured composites.

Enhancing the mechanical performance of polymer based nanocomposites by plasma-modification of nanoparticles

2012

Abstract The possibility of enhancing the mechanical performance of two different polymer-based nanocomposites using polyamide 6 (PA6) and poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA) as matrices was investigated. The nanofillers used were, respectively, either carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or an organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 15A), both previously modified by plasma treatment to introduce polar moieties. The nanofillers were fully characterized by Raman spectroscopy, XPS, FT-IR and XRD, demonstrating their effective modification with oxygenated groups. The nanocomposites were prepared by melt processing in order to obtain films and fibres. The mechanical tests carried out on the nanoc…

Bio-inspired Resorbable Calcium Phosphate-Polymer Nanocomposites for Bone Healing Devices with Controlled Drug Release

2011

In orthopedic research, increasing attention is being paid to bioresorbable composite materials as an attractive alternative to permanent metal bone healing devices. Typical composites consist of a biodegradable polyester matrix loaded with bioactive calcium phosphate ceramic particles (tricalcium phosphate, TCP or hydroxyapatite, HA) added to improve the biological response and mechanical properties of the neat polymer. The mechanical behavior of such particle-reinforced composites, however, falls far short of the expected performance in high-load bearing situations. Replicating some features of nacre—a strong and tough natural nanocomposite with a very high content of brittle inorganic ph…

Thermomechanical degradation of PLA-based nanobiocomposite

2015

Nanobiocomposites are a new class of biodegradable polymer materials with nanometric dispersion of inert particles in a biodegradable polymer matrix that show very interesting properties often very different from those of conventional- filled polymers and also biodegradability. An important issue in the applications of the biodegradable polymers is their easy degradability during processing due to the thermomechanical stress or to the presence of humidity. In this work, the thermomechanical degradation behavior of a nanobiocomposite made by a PLA-based blend and an organomodified montmorillonite has been investigated. The degradation kinetics has been followed by means of rheological, mecha…

Synthesis, Morphology and Rheological Behavior of Fluoropolymer-Polyacrylate Nanocomposites

2007

Nanocomposite materials composed of a PTFE copolymer core and an acrylic copolymer shell have been prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization. The effect of seed particle number and shell polymer composition on secondary particle nucleation and film formation ability of the dispersions has been studied. While TEM reveals a core-shell structure present in the particles, AFM investigation of the film shows a nearly uniform dispersion of the fluorinated seed particles in a matrix formed by the shell polymer. Rheological measurements show composite behavior of the core-shell latex films, especially at elevated temperatures, and an increase in viscosity and storage modulus when compared with the…

Organoclay Nanocomposites from Ethylene-Acrylic Acid Copolymers

2006

A study of the structure–property relationships for nanocomposites prepared by melt compounding from ethylene–acrylic acid copolymers of varied composition and molecular architecture, and organoclays modified with different ammonium ions has been made by DSC, POM, SEM, TEM, WAXD, and rheological and mechanical tests. Within the series of clays investigated, the best levels of dispersion were displayed by those organically modified with quaternary ammonium ions containing two long alkyl tails. The relevant nanocomposites were shown to possess mixed exfoliated and intercalated morphology. The spacing of the intercalated clay stacks, most of which comprise few silicate layers, was found to be …

Thermo-Mechanical Degradation of LDPE-Based Nanocomposites

2007

Thermo-mechanical degradation of LDPE-based nanocomposites was studied by mainly investigating the rheological properties. For all of the investigated processing conditions, the viscosity of the nanocomposites was higher than that of the pure-LDPE matrix, but on increasing the severity of the mixing conditions, the difference between the viscosity of the nano-filled polymer and that of the pure LDPE decreased. The X-ray traces of the nanocomposites suggest that intercalation has been achieved during the melt, when less-severe processing conditions were used. At severe processing conditions (longer mixing time, high temperature and shear stress) the thermo-mechanical degradation was accelera…

EVA Copolymer Based Nanocomposites

2002

Nanocomposites are a new class of polymer material with an ultrafine phase dispersion of the order of a few nanometers that shows very interesting properties often very different from those of conventional filled polymers. In this work the mechanical and optical properties of Poly-[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA copolymer) based nanocomposites have been investigated to evaluate its possible use in several applications. For example, films for covering greenhouse effect. Mechanical properties, and the rigidity in particular, are, on the contrary, quite low. Nanocomposites should avoid this shortcoming if optical properties and processability are not unfavorably effected. EVA copolymer base…
