A PARALLEL ALGORITHM FOR ANALYZING CONNECTED COMPONENTS IN BINARY IMAGES

In this paper, a parallel algorithm for analyzing connected components in binary images is described. It is based on the extension of the Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition (CAD) to a two-dimensional (2D) discrete space. This extension allows us to find the number of connected components, to determine their connectivity degree, and to solve the visibility problem. The parallel implementation of the algorithm is outlined and its time/space complexity is given.

Two-view “cylindrical decomposition” of binary images

This paper describes the discrete cylindrical algebraic decomposition (DCAD) construction along two orthogonal views of binary images. The combination of two information is used to avoid ambiguities for image recognition purposes. This algorithm associates an object connectivity graph to each connected component, allowing a complete description of the structuring information. Moreover, an easy and compact representation of the scene is achieved by using strings in a five letter alphabet. Examples on complex digital images are also provided. © 2001 Elsevier Science Inc.

The paper describes the combination a multi-views approach to represent connected components of 2D binary images. The approach is based on the Object Connectivity Graph (OCG), which is a sub-graph of the connectivity graph generated by the Discrete Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition(DCAD) performed in the 2D discrete space. We investigate the mean ergodicity and power boundedness of the weighted composition operator C-phi,C-psi(f) = psi(f o phi) with symbol phi and multiplier psi on the space H(D). We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the symbol phi and on the multiplier psi which characterize when the weighted composition operator is power bounded and (uniformly) mean ergodic. The sedimentation of a polydisperse suspension with particles belonging to N size classes (species) can be described by a system of N nonlinear, strongly coupled scalar first-order conservation laws. Effect of river restoration on life-history strategies in fish communities

Assessments of river restoration outcomes are mostly based on taxonomic identities of species, which may not be optimal because a direct relationship to river functions remains obscure and results are hardly comparable across biogeographic borders. The use of ecological species trait information instead of taxonomic units may help to overcome these challenges. Abundance data for fish communities were gathered from 134 river restoration projects conducted in Switzerland, Germany and Finland, monitored for up to 15 years. Detailed internal characterisation of two Finnish landfills by waste sampling

The aim of this study was to characterise the internal structure and composition of landfilled waste at two Finnish landfills to provide information for active and post-landfill operations. The two sites, Ammässuo and Kujala, have been in operation for 17 and 48 years, respectively. Waste was sampled (total 68 samples) and analysed for total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), biological methane potential (BMP) and leaching of organic material (determined as chemical oxygen demand, COD) and ammonium nitrogen (NH(4)-N). In a previous work (J. Sep. Sci. 2009, 32, 2793-2803), we reported an interpretive optimisation approach to achieve maximal resolution in minimal analysis time, based on models describing the retention and peak shape as a function of mobile phase composition and flow rate. The method was applied to the separation of a group of basic drugs in a Chromolith column. In that work, we found that the retention factors were sensitive to the flow rate. The reason of the observed deviations in retention times is the increase in the column volume at the applied pressure, which decreases the linear velocity inside the column. Government size, composition, volatility and economic growth

This paper analyses the effects in terms of size and volatility of government revenue and spending on growth in OECD and EU countries. The results of the paper suggest that both variables are detrimental to growth. In particular, looking more closely at the effect of each component of government revenue and spending, the results point out that i) indirect taxes (size and volatility); ii) social contributions (size and volatility); iii) government consumption (size and volatility); iv) subsidies (size); and v) government investment (volatility) have a sizeable, negative and statistically significant effect on growth. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
