On the international co-movement of natural interest rates

2022

Using quarterly data for 10 OECD countries and the Euro area and a Kalman filtering technique, we investigate the international co-movement among natural interest rates. We show that the US is the main source of global spillovers and global/common factors appear to be key drivers of such co-movement. Indeed, global liquidity is a net transmitter of shocks, while quantitative easing (QE) and the US Dollar are net recipients of shocks. We also find that total spillovers among natural interest rates have been rising since the late nineties, spiking at around economic re-cessions, periods of US monetary policy tightening, the global financial crisis and the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. On the Internationalization of Corporate Boards

2013

This study investigates the internationalization of corporate boards, using a sample of 346 non-financial listed Nordic firms during 2001–2008. Given a high level of international activity, these firms have surprisingly few foreign directors. The picture of international expertise changes considerably, however, if we also count the international experience of national directors. The percentage of foreign directors is related primarily to financial internationalization rather than foreign sales, and thus presumably to the monitoring rather than advisory functions. The international experience of the nationals covaries with foreign sales, and increases with the share of foreign directors. Thu…

Performative Regional (dis)Integration: Transnational Markets, Mobile Commodities, and Bordered North–South Differences

2011

Being implicated in an ambivalent play of both border crossing and drawing, global commodity chains are an ideal organizational field to analyze the fundamental paradox of global connectivity. Approaching the contingency of borders from a perspective informed by the performativity approach to markets, this paper starts from the assumption that this paradox is particularly salient in the context of commodity chains which connect the Global South with the Global North. Taking the example of one single agrocommodity, the tomato, and two border regions (Morocco–EU and Mexico–USA), we follow the links and heterogeneous associations which stretch from the border to the fields, supermarket shelves…

Ecological stoichiometry: a link between developmental speed and physiological stress in an omnivorous insect

2019

The elemental composition of organisms is a part of a suite of functional traits that may adaptively respond to fluctuating selection pressures. Life history theory predicts that predation risk and resource limitations impose selection pressures on organisms’ developmental time and are further associated with variability in energetic and behavioral traits. Between-individual differences in developmental speed, behaviors and physiology have been explained using the pace-of-life syndrome (POLS) hypothesis. However, how an organism’s developmental speed is linked with elemental body composition, metabolism and behavior is not well understood. We compared elemental body composition, latency to …

A numerical model of the cloud-topped planetary boundary-layer: influence of the physico-chemical properties of aerosol particles on the effective ra…

2000

The present investigation deals with the impact of different aeorosol types on the value of the effective radius of stratiform clouds. In several numerical sensitivity studies with the microphysical stratus model MISTRA, the aerosol composition was linearly changed from pure maritime to pure rural aerosol particles. Numerical results show that in environments with pure maritime aerosols, the effective radius is usually much larger than in continental regions. Values of the effective radius are also time-dependent with minima and maxima during day and night, respectively. In precipitating clouds, the effective radius might achieve values larger than 30 μm. In continental regions, the effecti…

Online Detection and Removal of Eye Blink Artifacts from Electroencephalogram

2020

The most prominent type of artifact contaminating electroencephalogram (EEG)signals are the eyeblink (EB) artifacts, which could potentially lead tomisinterpretation of the EEG signal. Online detection and removal of eyeblink artifacts from EEG signals are essential in applications such a Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), neurofeedback and epilepsy diagnosis. In this thesis, algorithms that combine unsupervised eyeblink artifact detection (eADA) with enhanced Empirical Mode Decomposition (FastEMD) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are proposed,i.e. FastEMD-CCA2 and FastCCA, to automatically identify eyeblink artifacts andremove them in an online setting. FastEMD-CCA2 and FastCCA have …

Highly efficient full-wave electromagnetic analysis of 3-D arbitrarily shaped waveguide microwave devices using an integral equation technique

2015

A novel technique for the full-wave analysis of 3-D complex waveguide devices is presented. This new formulation, based on the Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion (BI-RME) method, allows the rigorous full-wave electromagnetic characterization of 3-D arbitrarily shaped metallic structures making use of extremely low CPU resources (both time and memory). The unknown electric current density on the surface of the metallic elements is represented by means of Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions, and an algebraic procedure based on a singular value decomposition is applied to transform such functions into the classical solenoidal and nonsolenoidal basis functions needed by the original BI-RM…
