Effects of Textured Compression Socks on Postural Control in Physically Active Elderly Individuals

2014

The aim of this investigation was to analyze the role of textured compression socks on somatosensory function in a sample of physically active elderly individuals when performing a static balancing task. Both textured insoles and athletic tape are deemed to be beneficial for enhancing proprioception because of the capacity for exploiting availability of “sensorimotor system noise”, which enhances movement control and individuals’ joint position perception. It was hypothesized that the compression feature in knee length socks would provide greater stimulation to lower leg mechanoreceptors, and help participants achieve better balance control. Participants (N=8) performed a 30-s Romberg stati…

Soft Tissue Management and Postoperative Care

2014

The acute compartment syndrome is a limb-threatening complication. Although the diagnosis is primarily based on clinical evaluation, intracompartmental pressure monitoring may be required in specific situations. Surgical decompression is the only adequate treatment. Any delay in surgical management increases the risk of late sequellae.

Arteriovenöse Dissektion (AVD) bei retinalen Venolenastverschlüssen

2009

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to report on arteriovenous sheathotomy in branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) with a long-term follow-up and examine the visual field effects of this surgical approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a clinical trial 36 eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (22 eyes with ischaemia, 14 eyes with chronic macular oedema) underwent surgical decompression accompanied by peeling of the membrana limitans interna after prior isovolemic haemodilution for 3 months had been unsuccessfull. RESULTS: All eyes showed a significant reduction of macular oedema 3 months after surgery. During follow-up (median: 26.4 months) visual acuity increased in 24 / 36 eyes and was stab…

Efficient 3D Deep Learning for Myocardial Diseases Segmentation

2021

Automated myocardial segmentation from late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance images (LGE-MRI) is a critical step in the diagnosis of cardiac pathologies such as ischemia and myocardial infarction. This paper proposes a deep learning framework for improved myocardial diseases segmentation. In the first step, we build an encoder-decoder segmentation network that generates myocardium and cavity segmentations from the whole volume, followed by a 3D U-Net based on Shape prior to identifying myocardial infarction and myocardium ventricular obstruction (MVO) segmentations from the encoder-decoder prediction. The proposed network achieves good segmentation performance, as computed by avera…

Achalasia with megaesophagus and tracheal compression in a young patient: A case report.

2015

Highlights • This report emphasizes that physicians should be alert and consider airway obstruction and signs of dyspnea as severe and threatening symptoms in extensive cases of achalasia with megaesophagus. • Early surgical treatment provides a therapeutic option to obviate the occurrence of acute respiratory distress and consecutive complications. • In particular, difficulties in intubation prior to surgery must be considered. Due to potential tracheomalacia, the status of “bull frog neck” in achalasia, including severe tracheal compression caused by megaesophagus with concomitant cervical swelling, may also lead to extubation problems and deserves special care in the postoperative period.
