Epileptic seizures and cerebrovascular disease

1989

- A series of 88 patients with completed stroke was selected in which heralding, early and late seizures were distinguished according to their onset. Relationships between CT scan and clinical EEG data are discussed with particular emphasis on possible mechanisms of seizures. Thus, small emboli or haemodynamic factors are stressed in the cases of heralding seizures, metabolic disturbances with cytotoxic effects in early seizures and chronic epileptic focus in late seizures.

Emergency radiology: straightening of the cervical spine in MDCT after trauma--a sign of injury or normal variant?

2016

To evaluate whether straightening of the cervical spine (C-spine) alignment after trauma can be considered a significant multidetector CT (MDCT) finding.160 consecutive patients after C-spine trauma admitted to a Level 1 trauma centre received MDCT according to Canadian Cervical Spine Rule and National Emergency X-Radiography Utilization Study indication rule; subgroups with and without cervical collar immobilization (CCI +/-) were compared with a control group (n = 20) of non-traumatized patients. Two independent readers evaluated retrospectively the alignment, determined the absolute rotational angle of the posterior surface of C2 and C7 (ARA C2-7) and grouped the results for lordosis (-1…

Diagnostic performance of reformatted isotropic thin-section helical CT images in the detection of superior semicircular canal dehiscence

2017

Purpose The purpose of this article is to assess the diagnostic performance of computed tomography (CT) reformatted images for detection of superior semicircular canal (SSC) dehiscence. Material and methods Forty-two patients, with sound- and/or pressure-induced vestibular symptoms, and 42 control participants underwent helical CT examination with a highly collimated beam (0.5 mm). Reformatted images of the vestibular labyrinth were obtained in the standard axial and coronal planes (group A images), and in a plane parallel and perpendicular to the SSC (group B images). Diagnostic performance obtained by evaluating the group A images alone and the group B images alone was analyzed by using t…

Effect of Kernels Used for the Reconstruction of MDCT Datasets on the Semi-Automated Segmentation and Volumetry of Liver Lesions

2014

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different reconstruction kernels on the semi-automated segmentation of liver lesions in MDCT. Materials and Methods: A total 62 liver lesions were measured by three independent radiologists with the semi-automated segmentation software Oncology-Prototype (Fraunhofer MEVIS, Siemens Healthcare, Germany) using MDCT datasets (3-mm slice thickness, 2-mm increment) reconstructed with standard, soft and detailed kernels (Philips B, A and D). To ensure objective measurements, only lesions with satisfactory initial segmentation were included, and manual correction was not used. The effective diameter and volume were recorded for each lesion. Segmentation in the sof…

99mTc-Hexamethylpropylene Amineoxime Leukocyte Scintigraphy in Acute Pancreatitis: An Alternative to Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography?

2005

Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) is the most efficient imaging technique for the diagnosis and staging of acute pancreatitis (AP); its use, however, may be unfeasible in some patients as a consequence of the drawbacks of intravenous (IV) contrast material. The aim of this study was to test the utility of labeled leukocyte scintigraphy (LLS) as an alternative imaging technique to CECT for the staging of AP.Sixty-six patients with AP were prospectively studied. All patients underwent CECT and pancreatic LLS using (99m)Tc-hexamethylpropylene amineoxime as leukocyte label within a time interval of 2 days, in the early phase of AP. In addition, all patients had their serum C-reactive…

Acute extrahepatic infectious or inflammatory diseases are a cause of transient mosaic pattern on CT and MR imaging related to sinusoidal dilatation …

2015

To report the association of a mosaic enhancement pattern on contrast-enhanced CT or MR imaging and hepatic sinusoidal dilatation (SD) with acute inflammatory conditions affecting extrahepatic organs. From 2007 to 2012, patients with acute inflammatory diseases who underwent contrast-enhanced CT and/or MRI of the liver with a mosaic enhancement pattern were selected. Clinico-biological and other imaging features were collected at diagnosis and during follow-up. Sixteen patients were included (15 women, median age 27 years; range 18–68). Five women (33 %) were receiving oral contraceptives. Acute inflammatory diseases included pyelonephritis (n = 10), pancreatitis (n = 2), pneumonia (n = 1),…

The cheating liver: imaging of focal steatosis and fatty sparing

2016

ABSTRACT: Focal steatosis and fatty sparing are a frequent finding in liver imaging, and can mimic solid lesions. Liver regional variations in the degree of fat accumulation can be related to vascular anomalies, metabolic disorders, use of certain drugs or coexistence of hepatic masses. CT and MRI are the modalities of choice for the noninvasive diagnosis of hepatic steatosis. Knowledge of CT and MRI appearance of focal steatosis and fatty sparing is crucial for an accurate diagnosis, and to rule-out other pathologic processes. This paper will review the CT and MRI techniques for the diagnosis of hepatic steatosis and the CT and MRI features of common and uncommon causes of focal steatosis …

Quantitative computed tomography-assisted osteodensitometry of the pelvis after press-fit cup fixation: a prospective ten-year follow-up.

2011

Background: As a follow-up of a previously reported three-year study, we analyzed the periprosthetic acetabular cortical and cancellous bone density changes at ten years after implantation of a press-fit cup. Methods: Prospective clinical, radiographic, and quantitative computed tomography examinations were performed within ten days and at mean periods of one, three, and ten years after total hip arthroplasty with a press-fit cup, a femoral stem with a tapered design, and alumina-alumina pairing. Periacetabular cortical and cancellous bone density (mg CaHA/mL) in the cranial, ventral, and dorsal regions about the cup were measured for twenty-four hips in vivo. Results: All acetabular cups s…

Quantification of epicardial fat with cardiac CT angiography and association with cardiovascular risk factors in symptomatic patients: From the ALTER…

2019

PURPOSE We aimed to assess the association between features of epicardial adipose tissue and demographic, morphometric and clinical data, in a large population of symptomatic patients with clinical indication to cardiac computed tomography (CT) angiography. METHODS Epicardial fat volume (EFV) and adipose CT density of 1379 patients undergoing cardiac CT angiography (918 men, 66.6%; age range, 18–93 years; median age, 64 years) were semi-automatically quantified. Clinical variables were compared between diabetic and nondiabetic patients to assess potential differences in EFV and adipose CT density. Multiple regression models were calculated to find the clinical variables with a significant a…
