The gut microbiota is considered a relevant factor in obesity and associated metabolic diseases, for which postmenopausal women are particularly at risk. Increasing physical activity has been recognized as an efficacious approach to prevent or treat obesity, yet the impact of physical activity on the microbiota remains under-investigated. Results of the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD)

Since 1980, when we developed substitute for the internal anal sphicter, the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD-plasty), we have operated on seven children using this method, usually in combination with the pull-through procedure, and on five children after one or more previous operations. Since 1983, 11 cases with previous operations have undergone the modified “door-wing” SMFD-plasty. The results are excellent if the operation is used in primary combination with the pull-through procedure or if the “door-wing” modification is combined with reconstruction of the pelvic floor. It is also necessary that all cases undergo a biofeedback conditioning program.

Exercise restores decreased physical activity levels and increases markers of autophagy and oxidative capacity in myostatin/activin blocked mdx mice

The importance of adequate levels of muscle size and function and physical activity is widely recognized. Myostatin/activin blocking increases skeletal muscle mass but may decrease muscle oxidative capacity and can thus be hypothesized to affect voluntary physical activity. Soluble activin receptor IIB (sActRIIB-Fc) was produced to block myostatin/activins. Modestly dystrophic mdx mice were injected with sActRIIB-Fc or PBS with or without voluntary wheel running exercise for 7 wk. Healthy mice served as controls. Conditioning effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation evoking motor‐evoked potential on V‐wave response

Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the collision responsible for the volitional V‐wave evoked by supramaximal electrical stimulation of the motor nerve during voluntary contraction. V‐wave was conditioned by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the motor cortex at several inter‐stimuli intervals (ISI) during weak voluntary plantar flexions (n = 10) and at rest for flexor carpi radialis muscle (FCR; n = 6). Lipid peroxidation capacities in the myocardium of endurance-trained rats and mice in vitro.

The endurance-training programme in Experiment 1 (Exp. 1) consisted of a total swimming time of 149–159 h per male Han Wistar rat and in Experiment 2 (Exp. 2) the male NMRI-mice run on a treadmill at a speed of 25 m min-1 1 h per day, 5 days a week for 3 weeks. We have studied the intrinsic modifications on myocardial automatism, conduction, and refractoriness produced by chronic exercise. Experiments were performed on isolated rabbit hearts. Trained animals were submitted to exercise on a treadmill. D2-dopamine receptor blockade modulates temporal resolution in goldfish.

A possible effect of dopamine on the temporal resolution of goldfish was investigated in a behavioral, two-alternative, forced-choice procedure. Flicker fusion frequency (FFF) was measured before and after bilateral intravitreal injections of D1- or D2-dopamine receptor (D1-/D2-R) antagonists, or after depletion of retinal dopamine by bilateral intravitreal injections of the dopaminergic neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Prior to drug injections, fish achieved FFFs of 33–39 Hz.
