Ion transport through membranes: A computer experiment

Abstract Gramicidin-A is a linear pentadecapeptide antibiotic, which forms transmembrane channels; these have a number of interesting conductance characteristics [1, 2 and Refs. therein], as for example high specific ion fluxes (a single channel carries about 10 7 sodium ions/sec at 25 °C, 1 M NaCl and 100 mV transmembrane d.d.p.) have a remarkable ion selectivity among the monovalent cations. The permeability ratios with respect to sodium were found to be in following order H + (150) > NH 4 + (8.9) > Cs + (5.8) > Rb + (5.5) > K + (3.9) > Na + (1.0) > Li + (0.33). P300 amplitudes in the Concealed Information Test are less affected by depth of processing than electrodermal responses

The Concealed Information Test (CIT) has been used in the laboratory as well as in field applications to detect concealed crime related memories. The presentation of crime relevant details to guilty suspects has been shown to elicit enhanced N200 and P300 amplitudes of the event-related brain potentials (ERPs) as well as greater skin conductance responses (SCRs) as compared to neutral test items. Computational methods and theory for ion channel research

Ion channels are fundamental biological devices that act as gates in order to ensure selective ion transport across cellular membranes; their operation constitutes the molecular mechanism through which basic biological functions, such as nerve signal transmission and muscle contraction, are carried out. Here, we review recent results in the field of computational research on ion channels, covering theoretical advances, state-of-the-art simulation approaches, and frontline modeling techniques. We also report on few selected applications of continuum and atomistic methods to characterize the mechanisms of permeation, selectivity, and gating in biological and model channels.

The Measurement of Large Strains Using Electrical Resistance Strain Gages

It is well known that in the range of large strains, the electrical resistance strain gages have a nonlinear behavior, that is the variation of electrical resistance is a nonlinear function of the strain applied to the strain gage, which means that the gage factor K is not constant. Also, the Wheatstone bridge has a nonlinear behavior at large strains. Usually the two nonlinearities have opposite effects, therefore the overall nonlinearity decreases. This article presents an overview of the behavior of strain gages subject to large strains and of the corrections to account for nonlinearities of both the strain gage and the Wheatstone bridge.

Effect of potassium fertilization on the hydraulic conductance of laurel plants

The effect of potassium fertilization on hydraulic conductance was tested in 2-year-old potted laurel seedlings, grown in a greenhouse at the Botanical Garden of Palermo. Plants were divided into a control group (+K) and a potassium starved group (-K). A set of randomly chosen -K plants received irrigation with 25 mM KCl (KCl plants) 24 hours before measurements, to test the short term effect of potassium fertilization. Measurements were carried out in July and October 2008. Many strongly correlated Fermi systems including heavy-fermion (HF) metals and high-Tc superconductors belong to that class of quantum many-body systems for which Landau Fermiliquid (LFL) theory fails. Instead, these systems exhibit non-Fermi-liquid properties that arise from violation of time-reversal (T) and particle-hole (C) invariance.
