Spectral Measurement of Photon Emission from Individual Gold Nanoparticles Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

2016

The light emission spectra of individual Au nanoparticles induced by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) have been investigated. Two-dimensional ensembles of tunnel-coupled Au particles were prepared by thermal evaporation onto a native oxide silicon wafer in ultrahigh vacuum (10 – 9 mbar). Our STM measurements show a single peak at photon energy 1.6 eV in the tunneling mode and two peaks at 2.2 eV (connected with the Mie plasmon) and 1.45 eV (a new peak which was not discussed in literature before) in the field emission mode.

Photoemission time-of-flight spectromicroscopy of Ag nanoparticle films on Si(111)

2004

Abstract Time-of-flight photoemission electron microscopy was used to measure spatially resolved energy distribution curves of electrons emitted from Ag nanoparticle films with different mass thicknesses. Two-photon photoemission (2PPE) was induced by femtosecond laser pulse excitation with 3.1 eV photon energy and 200 fs pulse width. Regions of Ag nanoparticles with different average sizes and one region with a continuous 100 nm thick Ag film were deposited as a stepped wedge on a Si(1 1 1) substrate. Upon laser excitation the nanoparticle films exhibit a very high electron emission yield in the images, whereas the uncovered Si surface and the continuous Ag film are dark. The time-of-fligh…

Charge carrier transport mechanisms in CdZnTe detectors grown by the vertical Bridgman technique

2016

In this work, we report on the results of electrical characterization of CdZnTe (CZT) detectors, with gold electroless contacts, grown by the boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman technique (B-VB), currently produced at IMEM-CNR (Parma, Italy). The detectors, with different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm), have the same electrode layout: the anode is a central electrode (2 x 2 mm(2)) surrounded by a guard ring electrode. The cathode is a planar electrode covering the detector surface (4.1 x 4.1 mm(2)). Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were measured at different temperatures in order to study the charge transport and the electrical properties. These detectors were compared with the trav…

A Check of Water Drop Impact Effects on Surface Soil Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity

2020

The post-tillage dynamics of the surface soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, was studied at the Masse experimental station (central Italy, silty-clay-loam soil). A sequence of experiments was performed by rainfall simulation on two replicated micro-plots (width 1 m, length 0.92 m, slope 16%) established on bare soil. Each high-intensity rainfall simulation was preceded by a low-intensity wetting phase. The soil water content, w, was measured before wetting and both before and after simulation. Runoff was measured at 5 min intervals. The infiltration rate was calculated as the difference between rainfall intensity and runoff rate. Finally, Ks was assumed to be equal to the infiltratio…

Long-Range Order Induced by Intrinsic Repulsion on an Insulating Substrate

2015

An ordered arrangement of molecular stripes with equidistant appearance is formed upon the adsorption of 3-hydroxybenzoic acid onto calcite (10.4) held at room temperature. In a detailed analysis of the next-neighbor stripe distances measured in noncontact atomic force microscopy images at various molecular coverages, we compare the observed stripe arrangement with a random arrangement of noninteracting stripes. The experimentally obtained distance distribution deviates substantially from what is expected for a random distribution of noninteracting stripes, providing direct evidence for the existence of a repulsive interaction between the stripes. At low molecular coverage, where the averag…

Electron-phonon heat transport in degenerate Si at low temperatures

2004

The thermal conductance between electrons and phonons in a solid state system becomes comparatively weak at sub‐Kelvin temperatures. In this work five batches of thin heavily doped silicon‐on‐insulator samples with the electron concentration in the range of 2.0–16 × 1019 cm–3 were studied. Below 1 K all the samples were in the dirty limit of the thermal electron‐phonon coupling, where the thermal phonon wavelength exceeds the electron mean free path. The heat flow between electrons and phonons is proportional to (T6e–T6ph), where Te (Tph) is the electron (phonon) temperature. The constant of proportionality of the heat flow strongly depends on the electron concentration and its magnitude is…

Phonon Cooling of Nanomechanical Beams with Tunnel Junctions

2009

We demonstrate electronic cooling of 1D phonon modes in suspended nanowires for the first time, using normal-metal-insulator-superconductor (N-I-S) tunnel junctions. Simultaneous cooling of both electrons and phonons to a common temperature was achieved. In comparison with nonsuspended devices, better cooling performance is achieved in the whole operating range of bath temperatures between 0.1-0.7 K. The observed low-temperature thermal transport characteristics are consistent with scattering of ballistic phonons at the nanowire-bulk contact as being the mechanism limiting thermal transport. At the lowest bath temperature of the experiment approximately 100 mK, both phonons and electrons in…

Fabry-Perot resonances in birefringent YAlO_3 analyzed at terahertz frequencies

2009

The optical conductivity of heavy fermions can reveal fundamental properties of the charge carrier dynamics in these strongly correlated electron systems. Here we extend the conventional techniques of infrared optics on heavy fermions by measuring the transmission and phase shift of THz radiation that passes through a thin film of UNi2Al3, a material with hexagonal crystal structure. We deduce the optical conductivity in a previously not accessible frequency range, and furthermore we resolve the anisotropy of the optical response (parallel and perpendicular to the hexagonal planes). At frequencies around 7cm^-1, we find a strongly temperature-dependent and anisotropic optical conductivity t…

Differential study of substituted and unsubstituted cobalt phthalocyanines for gas sensor applications

2011

Abstract The conductivity of CoPc (cobalt phthalocyanine) and Co[(SO3Na)2,3Pc] was measured under a flow of two different gases (NH3 and O3), during exposure/recovery cycles. It appears that the relative responses are linearly related to the concentration, in the 20–200 ppb range for O3 and in the 20–200 ppm range for NH3. Observed during time, the sensing parameters allow a qualitative understanding of the kinetics. The comparative study of those products under both different gases gave interesting results for sensor applications. Whereas CoPc is sensitive to both gases, its sulfonated counterpart is only sensitive to NH3.

Performance Enhancement of Vapour-Compression Refrigeration Systems Using Nanoparticles: An Experimental Study

2021

In recent years, the development and characterization of new refrigerants with higher energetic efficiency have gained considerable interest [1], with a particular emphasis on the energetic performance of suitable replacements. Nanofluids have been proposed as possible alternative due to their role in enhancing the thermophysical proprieties of traditional refrigerants [2]. The comprehensive review in [2] suggests that thermal conductivity of nanofluid increases with temperature and volume concentration, but it is dependent on nanoparticle size distribution; specific heat is also increased if nanoparticles are added to the refrigerant.
