Olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) is the most serious pest of cultivated olives in the Mediterranean basin. to date we have not seen the same level of damage in south africa, but the question remained whether it poses a similar threat as the local olive industry expands. From this study it is clear that the climatic con- ditions during the period preceding harvest are un- favourable for rapid population growth of OFF in the Western Cape, in contrast to conditions in the coastal area of Trapani province in Sicily. Intervention and peace*

Abstract Intervention often does not lead to peace, but rather to prolonged conflict. Indeed, we document that it is an important source of prolonged conflicts. We introduce a theoretical model of the balance of power to explain why this should be the case and to analyse how peace can be achieved: either a hot peace between hostile neighbours or the peace of the strong dominating the weak. Non-intervention generally leads to peace after defeat of the weak. Hot peace can be achieved with sufficiently strong outside intervention. The latter is thus optimal if the goal of policy is to prevent the strong from dominating the weak.

This study describes construction features typical of masonry buildings in the historic centre of Alcamo, Sicily. This local context is significant for the extent of the historic building stock and for the large use of travertine as traditional masonry material. The local availability of this rock is a peculiarity of Alcamo, in comparison with the rest of Sicily, and its use explains the originality of several construction details. The analysis exposed in this study is part of a wider research, aimed at developing a Sicilian database of mechanical and hygrothermal data for masonry tipologies. Photocatalytic degradation of toluene in aqueous suspensions of polycrystalline TiO2 in the presence of the surfactant tetradecyldimethylamino-oxide

The heterogeneous photocatalytic method has been used for carrying out the toluene oxidation in synthetic aqueous solutions containing also a zwitterionic surfactant, i.e. tetradecyldimethylamino-oxide (C 14 DMAO). A batch photoreactor with immersed lamp and two kinds of polycrystalline TiO 2 catalysts were used. The results indicate a substantial increase of the toluene degradation rate in the presence of the surfactant; the complete photo- oxidation of toluene was achieved in a few hours of irradiation at the used experimental conditions; at higher irradiation times also C 14 DMAO was completely degraded. Use of Biocides for the Control of Fungal Outbreaks in Subterranean Environments: The Case of the Lascaux Cave in France

The Lascaux Cave in France suffered an outbreak of the fungus Fusarium solani in 2001. Biocides were applied for three years to control this outbreak. Four months after the initial biocide application, a new outbreak appeared in the form of black stains that progressively invaded the cave. The black stains on the ceiling and passage banks were so evident by 2007 that they became one of the caves major problems. Therefore, biocides were used again in 2008. The present study investigated the fungal communities associated with the black stains and the effectiveness of the biocides applied, by using cloning, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, and culture-dependent methods.
