Pre-Stressed Sub-Surface Contribution on Bulk Diffusion in Metallic Solids

2011

Our recent modelling works and corresponding numerical simulations realized to describe the UO2 oxidation processes confirm the theory showing that an applied mechanical strain can strongly affect the local oxygen diffusion in a stressed solid. This result allows us to assume that stress field, previously applied at the surface of a metallic sample on several microns, will delay the degradation during its oxidation. Considering this hypothesis, we implemented a FEM simulation code developed in our laboratory to numerically investigate some different stress fields applied on a sample sub-surface, that might significantly modify the volume diffusion of oxygen during the oxidation process. The…

Proton-conducting zirconium phosphate/poly(vinyl acetate)/glycerine gel electrolytes

2003

This work reports on a proton gel electrolyte composed of zirconium phosphate (ZP) particles suspended in a poly(vinyl acetate)/glycerine matrix. The material was studied by X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, impedance spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry. It had a proton conductivity of 1–0.1 mS/cm at room temperature and remained stable and transparent up to at least 110 °C; it therefore appears suitable for uses in electrochromic devices. The structure of the ZP powder and of the gel is discussed in terms of water removal from interplanar spaces by heating or exfoliation. It is suggested that an exfoliation of the layered structure of ZP by intercalation of glyce…

Manufacturing and testing of a metal supported Ni-YSZ/YSZ/La2NiO4 IT-SOFC synthesized by physical surface deposition processes

2017

International audience; The manufacture of the last generation metal supported IT-SOFC complete cell by dry surface deposition pro-cesses is really challenging. Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) and Reactive Magnetron Sputtering (RMS) processes are respectively adapted to deposit Ni-YSZ anode and YSZ electrolyte layers. RMS is also used to coat a thin and dense La2NiO4 (LNO) cathode layer. In this work, we have realized a complete cell on metallic support (ITM) produced by PLANSEE SE. The innovative LNO cathode layer was compared with screen-printed LNO layers, with and without RMS bonding layer. Electrochemical and Voltammetry tests were performed on these samples. It reveals lower perform…

Elaboration of Nickel Aluminide Diffusion Coatings: Application to Oxidation Resistance

2008

Aluminide diffusion coatings are widely used in aeronautic domain. Nickel based superalloys present good mechanical properties and creep resistance at high temperature but their corrosion resistance is somewhat poor. In order to enhance their lifetime at high temperature, aluminide coatings can be applied on alloy surface. Aluminium present on material surface can form, at high temperature, alumina scale which is a protective oxide scale. In the present study, nickel aluminide coatings were carried out by aluminisation in a single step pack cementation process on nickel based superalloys 600 and AM1. Ni-Al intermetallic was obtained in each case. Oxidation tests were carried out at 900°C in…

Oxidation behavior of γ-TiAl coated with zirconia thermal barriers

2002

Abstract The applicability of the thermal barrier coating concept, which is an established concept for Ni-base alloys, was investigated for the first time for γ-TiAl. As potential bond coats, the following surface treatments were applied: Al-diffusion coating, Al-diffusion coating combined with short term pre-oxidation in air, short term pre-oxidation in oxygen of a rough surface finish γ-TiAl sample without aluminide coating. For the purpose of lowering the temperature of the γ-TiAl substrate surface, and thus, to prolong the life time, a zirconia thermal barrier coating (TBC) was applied on top of the above-mentioned modified TiAl surfaces. Oxidation resistance of the modified γ-TiAl allo…

WEAR MECHANISM OF CERAMIC TOOLS

1993

Abstract Cutting tests were performed using ceramic cutting tools under continuous cutting conditions. The tests were carried out on AISI 1040 steel, with cutting speeds ranging from 5 to 11 m s −1 . The wear mechanism was investigated for both crater and flank. Alumina-toughened zirconia of submicron grain size showed the best wear resistance. Alumina with TiC, TiN and ZrO 2 inclusions exhibited a wear resistance a little lower than the above-mentioned materials. Low chemical stability seems to be the reason for the poor performances of the silicon carbide whiskers-reinforced alumina, silicon nitride and the tungsten carbide inserts.

Hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured zirconia materials: Present state and future prospects

2005

Abstract Hydrothermal procedures for the synthesis of zirconia-doped nanocrystalline powders show important advantages from the thermodynamic and kinetic point of view (larger domain stability of solid species, faster kinetics crystallisation) as well as from technological point of view (one-step synthesis process at low temperatures, better control of the crystallisation and grain sizes with possibilities to obtain nanocrystalline materials, versatility, environmental friendly technology). Establishment of the conditions for obtaining ZrO2-doped with different oxides is based on thermodynamic predictions. Kinetic modelling of the hydrothermal synthesis of zirconia nanopowders is presented.…

Crystallization behaviour and microstructural development in ZrSiO 4 and V-ZrSiO 4 solid solutions from colloidal gels

2000

Abstract Zircon and vanadium-doped zircon blue pigments were prepared by heat treatment of gel precursors. Gels with nominal compositions Vx-ZrSiO4 with x=0.0, 0.002, 0.004, 0.02 and 0.2 were prepared by formation of a silica coating on zirconia colloidal particles previously obtained. The crystallization behavior and microstructural evolution were studied using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-rays microanalysis (EDX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The results indicated that the vanadia loading in the precursor gels speeds up the crystallization of the vanadium-co…
