Highly stable and porous porphyrin-based zirconium and hafnium phosphonates – electron crystallography as an important tool for structure elucidation
2018
The Ni-metallated porphyrin-based tetraphosphonic acid (Ni-tetra(4-phosphonophenyl)porphyrin, Ni-H8TPPP) was used for the synthesis of highly porous metal phosphonates containing the tetravalent cations Zr4+ and Hf4+. The compounds were thoroughly characterized regarding their sorption properties towards N2 and H2O as well as thermal and chemical stability. During the synthesis optimization the reaction time could be substantially decreased under stirring from 24 to 3 h in glass vials. M-CAU-30, [M2(Ni-H2TPPP)(OH/F)2]·H2O (M = Zr, Hf) shows exceptionally high specific surface areas for metal phosphonates of aBET = 1070 and 1030 m2 g-1 for Zr- and Hf-CAU-30, respectively, which are very clos…
From clinical description, to in vitro and animal studies, and backward to patients: Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in Fanconi anemia
2013
Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disease associated with deficiencies in DNA repair pathways. A body of literature points to a pro-oxidant state in FA patients, along with evidence for oxidative stress (OS) in the FA phenotype reported by in vitro, molecular, and animal studies. A highlight arises from the detection of mitochondrial dysfunction (MDF) in FA cell lines of complementation groups A, C, D2, and G. As yet lacking, in vivo studies should focus on FA-associated MDF, which may help in the understanding of the mitochondrial basis of OS detected in cells and body fluids from FA patients. Beyond the in vitro and animal databases, the available analytical devices may prompt the dir…
Clinical outcomes of veneered zirconia anterior partial fixed dental prostheses: A 12-year prospective clinical trial
2019
Abstract Statement of problem Anterior veneered zirconia partial fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) have substituted for metal-ceramic to improve esthetics and biocompatibility. However, the material is susceptible to aging or hydrothermal degradation and to chipping of the feldspathic veneer. Whether these susceptibilities limit the clinical performance of anterior veneered zirconia FPDs is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this prospective clinical study was to analyze the mechanical and biologic behavior of zirconia partial FDPs in the anterior region over a 12-year follow-up period. Material and methods Twenty-seven 3- to 6-unit FDPs fabricated from zirconia veneered with feldspathic porcelai…
BST ceramics: Effect of attrition milling on dielectric properties
2004
Abstract The effect of grain size on the dielectric properties of Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) ceramics is investigated. Attrition milling is chosen to obtain nanometre particle size from micrometre particle size powders. Fine grained ceramics are obtained by hot uniaxial pressing (HUP). Additionally, the present study is focused on the effect of the nature of milling balls on loss tangent and permittivity. For that, three kinds of balls are tested: calcia, yttria or ceria stabilised zirconia balls. The properties of these samples are evaluated in the range of MHz. The balls induce an involuntary doping of powders which modifies the dielectric properties, especially the Curie temperature and loss t…
INFLUENCE OF ZIRCONIUM ON STRUCTURAL, MICROSTRUCTURAL AND FERROELECTRIC PROPERTIES OF BaZr0.20Ti0.80O3 CERAMIC
2009
ABSTRACT Barium zirconium titanate BaZrxTi1-xO3 ceramics have been obtained by conventional method. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the BaZr0.20Ti0.80O3 crystallizes in the cubic structure. The lattice parameter a increases with temperature, at temperature ∼308 K a small deviation is observed. The performed EDS study revealed that the samples were perfectly sintered and that the material was chemically homogeneous. It contains a little glassy phase and the grains are well shaped. The zirconium content (20 mol%) in the examined solid solution caused downward shift of the temperature T m . The increase of the achieved permittivity values ϵm was observed as well.
PKSP-dependent reduction of phagolysosome fusion and intracellular kill of Aspergillus fumigatus conidia by human monocyte-derived macrophages.
2002
Summary Previously, we described the isolation of an Aspergillus fumigatus mutant producing non-pigmented conidia, as a result of a defective polyketide synthase gene, pksP (polyketide synthase involved in pigment biosynthesis). The virulence of the pksP mutant was attenuated in a murine animal infection model and its conidia showed enhanced susceptibility towards damage by monocytes in vitro. Because macrophage-mediated killing is critical for host resistance to aspergillosis, the interaction of both grey-green wild-type conidia and white pksP mutant conidia with human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) was studied with respect to intracellular processing of ingested conidia. After phagocy…
Near-coincidence lattice method for the determination of epitaxy strains during oxidation of metals
2000
Abstract A theoretical method is proposed to evaluate the strains due to epitaxy between a metal and its oxide. Based on Bollmann’s approach of two adjoining grains, it uses the quantitative texture analysis of the two materials separated by the phase boundary. Our study of the Zr/ZrO 2 and Mo/MoO 3 systems reveals strong correlations between the criterion of best fit proposed by Bollmann and the orientation distribution function obtained by a quantitative texture analysis. The results of this study are used in a thermo-mechano-chemical simulation of the oxidation process of zirconium, which leads to this observation: two different zirconia orientations induce two different oxidation kineti…
Up-conversion luminescence dependence on structure in zirconia nanocrystals
2013
The zirconia samples containing two different concentrations of Er and Yb dopants were prepared using the Sol–Gel method and up-conversion luminescence was studied using the time-resolved techniques. The up-conversion luminescence depends on the oxygen content in surrounding gasses during annealing as well as on the annealing temperature. These dependencies indicate that ZrO2 intrinsic defects annealing and generation, phase transition as well as dopant redistribution take place. The possible role of these processes on up-conversion luminescence is discussed. The results of experiments confirmed that the annealing temperature has a crucial influence on up-conversion luminescence for samples…
Thermodynamic considerations of the grain size dependency of material properties
1994
Phase transitions which depend on grain size induce very interesting properties in materials such as zirconia or barium titanate. A new and rigorous thermodynamic treatment of this type of phase transition is proposed with consideration of the surface phenomena. An interpretation is given of the observed differences when the material—particularly BaTiO3—under consideration is a fine grain powder or is a fine grain ceramic.
