Transmission of very slow neutrons through material foils and its influence on the design of ultracold neutron sources

2009

At the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), a very intense source of ultracold neutrons (UCN) is being built. The UCN converter of solid deuterium must be contained in a vessel. Produced UCN leave that vessel through its top lid. To decide on the design of the vessel and the top lid, we have measured the transmission of neutrons with velocities between 3 and 20 m/s through different material foils. Contrary to expectations, we found that transmission through aluminium and aluminium alloys is equal or even higher compared to zirconium and reactor-grade zirconium alloys, respectively.

Decays of theY97isomers to the single neutron nucleusZr97

1996

The decays of the 9/2(+) and of the three-quasiparticle high spin isomer in Y-97 have been investigated following on-line mass separation with the ion-guide technique. Spins and parities for several of the lowest-lying levels in the daughter nucleus Zr-97 are revised and configurations are proposed. In particular, the 2264 keV level is identified as the h(11/2) single-neutron level. The population of a cascade on top of the h(11/2) level provides evidence for Gamow-Teller beta decay of the high-spin Y-97 isomer. Levels and transition rates are qualitatively well reproduced by regarding Zr-97 as a single-neutron nucleus with respect to the doubly closed Zr-96 core.

Converting external potential fluctuations into nonzero time-average electric currents using a single nanopore

2015

The possibility of taking advantage of a fluctuating environment for energy and information transduction is a significant challenge in biological and artificial nanostructures. We demonstrate here directional electrical transduction from fluctuating external signals using a single nanopore of conical shape immersed in an ionic aqueous solution. To this end, we characterize experimentally the average output currents obtained by the electrical rectification of zero time-average input potentials. The transformation of external potential fluctuations into nonzero time-average responses using a single nanopore in liquid state is of fundamental significance for biology and nanophysics. This energ…

Quantum dynamics of the photostability of pyrazine

2015

We investigate the radiationless decay of photoexcited pyrazine to its ground electronic state using multireference electronic structure and quantum dynamics calculations. We construct a quadratic vibronic coupling Hamiltonian, including the four lowest electronic states and ten vibrational modes, by fitting to more than 5000 ab initio points. We then use this model to simulate the non-adiabatic excited state dynamics of the molecule using the multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method. On the basis of these calculations, we propose a new mechanism for this decay process involving a conical intersection between the Au(nπ*) state and the ground state. After excitation to the B2u(ππ*) …

On the regularity of critical and minimal sets of a free interface problem

2015

We study a free interface problem of finding the optimal energy configuration for mixtures of two conducting materials with an additional perimeter penalization of the interface. We employ the regularity theory of linear elliptic equations to study the possible opening angles of Taylor cones and to give a different proof of a partial regularity result by Fan Hua Lin [Calc Var. Partial Differential Equations, 1993].

On the beneficial effect of rotor suspension anisotropy on viscous-dry hysteretic instability

2012

The destabilizing influence of the internal friction on the supercritical rotor whirl can be efficiently counterbalanced by other external dissipative sources and/or anisotropic suspension systems. The theoretical approach may take the internal dissipation into consideration either by dry or viscous models. Nevertheless, several numerical results and a new perturbation technique of the averaging type prove that similar rotor motions and stability limits are achievable by both models, whence the linear viscous assumption appears preferable. Thus, the internal hysteretic force may be expressed by the product of an equivalent viscous coefficient and the rotor centre velocity relative to a refe…

Basic Concepts and Methodology

2016

In this chapter, the main concepts relevant for the theoretical study of elementary photochemical processes are briefly reviewed. The notions of vibronic coupling and conical intersection are first introduced. The main basic tools from the molecular electronic structure theory and their use for the exploration of potential energy surfaces are then presented.

Three-dimensional field distribution in the focal region of low-Fresnel-number axicons.

2006

Three-dimensional intensity and phase distributions generated by microaxicons are evaluated in the low-Fresnel-number regime. Apertured and nonapertured conical wavefronts may generate transverse patterns with notable deviations from the expected nondiffracting Bessel beam. First-order analytical expressions are proposed for the evaluation of the wave field produced by axicons of different Fresnel number in the focal region.

Spiral conical approximations to double reflection Wolter optics

2008

The design of a grazing incidence focusing optic obtained from a spiral approximation to multiple nested cones produces an annular image of a point source. The angular size of the annulus depends mainly on the pitch of the winding and the focal length. For a spiral conical approximation to Wolter optics, the effect is magnified by the double reflection. However, if the two conical spirals are wound one clock-wise and the other counter-clock-wise, then the aberration is partially compensated. We use a ray tracing code to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of this optical design for potential applications of a light weight optics technology based on plastic foils that we are currently inve…

Thin plastic shell x-ray optics: an update

2003

We present new results from a program to develop large area X-ray telescopes that are made from thin plastic shells. We use multi-shell cylindrical lenses in a point-to-point configuration to form full aperture images of the small focal spot in a an X-ray tube on a microchannel plate detector. The image data are analyzed to yield radial profiles and encircled energy curves. The derived parameters can be extrapolated to the case of a telescope that is a conical approximation to Wolter 1 optics. The plastic shells can be coated with suitable mono- or multilayers that allow for a wideband coverage of X-ray energies. Our current program is focused on the development of a large area, hard X-ray …
