Benefits from energy policy synchronisation of Brazil’s North-Northeast interconnection
2020
Abstract During the last 10 years Brazil has accelerated the incorporation of new wind capacity into its power matrix. This situation has generated the need for increased transport capacity. However, there have been delays in the planning process for new transmission line construction, thus inducing trapped electricity in the system; in other words, electricity that cannot be dispatched to the interconnected system. Using system dynamics modelling, this paper assesses energy policy alternatives for improving the synchronisation between the construction of both power generation and transmission capacities. Simulation results show that policy synchronisation within the wind industry may provi…
On the development of a communication-aware task mapping technique
2004
Clusters have become a very cost-effective platform for high-performance computing. In these systems, although currently existing networks actually provide enough bandwidth for the existing applications and workstations, the trend is towards the interconnection network becoming the system bottleneck. Therefore, in the future, scheduling strategies will have to take into account the communication requirements of the applications and the communication bandwidth that the network can offer. One of the key issues in these strategies is the task mapping technique used when the network becomes the system bottleneck. In this paper, we propose a communication-aware mapping technique that tries to mat…
Hysteresis Model of Unconscious-Conscious Interconnection: Exploring Dynamics on m-Adic Trees
2015
The theoretical model outlined in this paper, has been experimentally validated by: H. Kim ,J-Y. Moon ,G.A. Mashour & U. Lee, ''Mechanisms of hysteresis in human brain networks during transitions of consciousness and unconsciousness: Theoretical principles and empirical evidence'', PLOS-Computational Biology, August 30, 2018, https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1006424; International audience; In this brief note, we focus attention on a possible implementation of a basic hysteretic pattern (the Preisach one), suitably generalized, into a formal model of unconscious-conscious interconnection and based on representation of mental entities by m-adic numbers. …
A new implant-abutment connection for bacterial microleakage prevention: An in vitro study
2017
Purpose The aim of our study is to evaluate the ability of a new type of implant (Konus Implant System®, Industrie biomediche e farmaceutiche, Italy) to isolate the internal of an implant-abutment connection from the external environment. Materials and methods To identify the capability of the implant to protect the internal space from the external environment, the passage of genetically modified Escherichia coli across implant-abutment interface was evaluated. Implants were immerged in a bacterial culture for twenty-four hours and then bacteria amount was measured inside implant-abutment interface with Real-time PCR. Results Bacteria were detected inside all studied implants, with a median…
The resemblance of an autocorrelation function to a power spectrum density for a spike train of an auditory model
2013
In this work we develop an analytical approach for calculation of the all-order interspike interval density (AOISID), show its connection with the autocorrelation function, and try to explain the discovered resemblance of AOISID to the power spectrum of the same spike train.
Multi-Path U-Net Architecture for Cell and Colony-Forming Unit Image Segmentation
2022
U-Net is the most cited and widely-used deep learning model for biomedical image segmentation. In this paper, we propose a new enhanced version of a ubiquitous U-Net architecture, which improves upon the original one in terms of generalization capabilities, while addressing several immanent shortcomings, such as constrained resolution and non-resilient receptive fields of the main pathway. Our novel multi-path architecture introduces a notion of an individual receptive field pathway, which is merged with other pathways at the bottom-most layer by concatenation and subsequent application of Layer Normalization and Spatial Dropout, which can improve generalization performance for small datase…
Assisted software design of a wide variety of windings in rotating electrical machinery
2014
In this paper a software developed by the Authors for winding design is presented. In particular, this software can be used as a valid aid in design and analysis for a wide variety of windings with generic number of phases, pole pairs, slot number, etc.. The calculation of winding factors and the evaluation of their harmonic distribution is also accomplished. The software is implemented in MATLAB® environment. By means of some examples, covering the most relevant winding types, the capabilities of this software will be shown. Particularly, integer and fractional slot, single and double layer winding, concentrated windings, imbrication, belt widening and belt shifting techniques can be treat…
On the Limit Behaviour of Moment Resisting Connections Under Uncertainties
2021
Abstract Moment resisting connections are mainly designed to transfer bending moments and shear forces. Generally speaking, the design strength of a moment resisting connection can be classified as full-strength (moment capacity of the connection equal to or greater than that of the connected member) or partial-strength (the moment capacity of the connection less than that of the connected member). Similar remarks can be made regarding the stiffness defining connection rigid or semi-rigid if compared to the stiffness of the connected member. In the past, full-strength connections have been widely adopted especially in moment resisting frames and their structural performance relied on the pr…
The exploitation of distributional information in syllable processing
2004
There is now growing evidence that people are sensitive to the statistical regularities embedded into linguistic utterances, but the exact nature of the distributional information to which human performance is sensitive is an issue that has been surprisingly neglected as yet. In order to address this issue, we first propose an overview of some basic measures of association, going from the simple co-occurrence frequency to the normative measure of contingency, rw: We then report an experiment collecting judgments of word-likeness as a function of the relationship between the phonemes composing the rimes (VC). The contingency between Vs and Cs, as assessed by rw; was the best predictor of chi…
Illusory conjunctions in French: The nature of sublexical units in visual word recognition
2005
The respective influence of orthographic redundancy (Seidenberg, 1987) and syllable boundaries (Rapp, 1992) on reading units in French was tested in three experiments, using the illusory conjunction paradigm (Prinzmetal, Treiman, & Rho, 1986). Bigram boundaries were defined according to bigram frequencies. The data showed that the syllable effect was attenuated or cancelled when syllable boundaries did not coincide with bigram boundaries. Reading units were defined by syllable and orthographic information. The implications of such findings for the dual route theory and the PDP model are discussed.
