ELFE: An electron laboratory for europe

Abstract After about 10 years of discussions the physics case for ELFE, the Electron Laboratory For Europe, has become much clearer. The paper gives a personal view of the salient physics visible today. It is argued that QCD cannot be taken as the the “theory of strong interactions” as long as it cannot describe the hadronic world at low energies. New theoretical tools as “semi-exclusive reactions” and “off-forward-parton distributions” are promising new insight into hadrons by means of new observables. Asymmetric tri-bi-maximal mixing and residual symmetries

Asymmetric tri-bi-maximal mixing is a recently proposed, grand unified theory (GUT) based, flavor mixing scheme. In it, the charged lepton mixing is fixed by the GUT connection to down-type quarks and a $\mathcal{T}_{13}$ flavor symmetry, while neutrino mixing is assumed to be tri-bi-maximal (TBM) with one additional free phase. Here we show that this additional free phase can be fixed by the residual flavor and CP symmetries of the effective neutrino mass matrix. We discuss how those residual symmetries can be unified with $\mathcal{T}_{13}$ and identify the smallest possible unified flavor symmetries, namely $(\mathbb{Z}_{13}\times\mathbb{Z}_{13})\rtimes \mathrm{D}_{12}$ and $(\mathbb{Z}_…

First Direct Observation of the Interaction between a Comet and a Coronal Mass Ejection Leading to a Complete Plasma Tail Disconnection

This a discovery report of the first direct imaging of the interaction a comet with a coronal mass ejection (CME) in the inner heliosphere with high temporal and spatial resolution. The observations were obtained by the Sun-Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) Heliospheric Imager-1 (HI-1) aboard the STEREO mission. They reveal the extent of the plasma tail of comet 2P/Encke to unprecedented lengths and allow us to examine the mechanism behind a spectacular tail disconnection event. A large rotating structure around AB Doradus A at VLBI scale

AbstractWe report the results of three VLBI observations of the pre-main-sequence star AB Doradus A at 8.4 GHz. With almost three years between consecutive observations, we found a complex structure at the expected position of this star for all epochs. Maps at epochs 2007 and 2010 show a double core-halo morphology while the 2013 map reveals three emission peaks with separations between 5 and 18 stellar radii. Furthermore, all maps show a clear variation of the source structure within the observing time. Correct thermodynamic forces in Tsallis Thermodynamics: connection with Hill Nanothermodynamics

The equivalence between Tsallis Thermodynamics and Hill Nanothermodynamics is established. The correct thermodynamic forces in Tsallis thermodynamics are pointed out. Through this connection we also find a general expression for the entropic index $q$ which we illustrate with two physical examples, allowing in both cases to relate $q$ to the underlying dynamics of the Hamiltonian systems.

Model pseudofermionic systems: Connections with exceptional points

We discuss the role of pseudo-fermions in the analysis of some two-dimensional models, recently introduced in connection with non self-adjoint hamiltonians. Among other aspects, we discuss the appearance of exceptional points in connection with the validity of the extended anti-commutation rules which define the pseudo-fermionic structure.

Coronal Magnetic Field Measurements Through Quasi-Transverse Propagation

The QT-propagation of microwaves as a means to measure coronal magnetic fields and the inversion of circular polarization as an observational proof of the QT-propagation are discussed. The first part of the chapter briefly outlines the relevant geometry and mathematical relations. Then the state of the art in the coronal magnetography and some possibilities are demonstrated. We discuss use of the technique for coronal magnetography and give some estimates concerning the coronal magnetography with the forthcoming Frequency Agile Solar Radiotelescope.

Temporal evolution of neoclassical tearing modes in the frequently interrupted regime

A phenomenological method for description of temporal evolution of neoclassical tearing modes in the frequently interrupted regime (FIR) is proposed. The method makes it possible to predict the beginning and the end of the FIR regime as well as the frequency of the FIR drops. A few experimental parameters which are used in the model are commonly measured quantities. Several specific ASDEX Upgrade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASDEX_Upgrade) FIR discharges with different heating and different FIR behavior are analyzed in detail.

Particular attention is paid to the question of extrapolation of the characteristic curve for the region of the weakest stars in the absence of standards. Light majoron cold dark matter from topological defects and the formation of boson stars

We show that for a relatively light majoron ($\ll 100 $ eV) non-thermal production from topological defects is an efficient production mechanism. Taking the type I seesaw as benchmark scheme, we estimate the primordial majoron abundance and determine the required parameter choices where it can account for the observed cosmological dark matter. The latter is consistent with the scale of unification. Possible direct detection of light majorons with future experiments such as PTOLEMY and the formation of boson stars from the majoron dark matter are also discussed.
