Online measurement of floc size, viscosity, and consistency of cellulose microfibril suspensions with optical coherence tomography
2021
AbstractIn this study, cellulose microfibril (CMF) suspensions were imaged during pipe flow at consistencies of 0.4%, 1.0%, and 1.6% with optical coherence tomography (OCT) to obtain images of the structure and the local velocity of the suspension. The viscosities obtained by combining pressure loss measurement with the OCT velocity data showed typical shear thinning behavior and were in excellent agreement with viscosities obtained with ultrasound velocity profiling. The structural OCT images were used to calculate the radial and the axial floc sizes of the suspension. A fit of power law to the geometrical floc size–shear stress data gave the same power law index for all consistencies, sug…
Leon Henkin the Reviewer
2014
In this chapter, we intend to look at Henkin’s reviews, a total of forty-six. The books and papers reviewed deal with a large variety of subjects that range from the algebraic treatment of logical systems to issues concerning the philosophy of mathematics and, not surprisingly—given his active work in mathematical education—one on the teaching of this subject. Most of them were published in The Journal of Symbolic Logic and only one in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society. We will start by sorting these works into subjects and continue by providing a brief summary of each of them in order to point out those aspects that are originally from Henkin, and what we take to be mistake…
Elastoplastic analysis by active macro-zones with linear kinematic hardening and von Mises materials.
2014
In this paper a strategy to perform elastoplastic analysis with linear kinematic hardening for von Mises materials under plane strain conditions is shown. The proposed approach works with the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method applied to multidomain problems using a mixed variables approach, to obtain a more stringent solution. The elastoplastic analysis is carried out as the response to the loads and the plastic strains, the latter evaluated through the self-equilibrium stress matrix. This matrix is used both, in the predictor phase, for trial stress evaluation and, in the corrector phase, for solving a nonlinear global system which provides the elastoplastic solution of the active…
Complementary Judgment Matrix Method with Imprecise Information for Multicriteria Decision-Making
2018
The complementary judgment matrix (CJM) method is an MCDA (multicriteria decision aiding) method based on pairwise comparisons. As in AHP, the decision-maker (DM) can specify his/her preferences using pairwise comparisons, both between different criteria and between different alternatives with respect to each criterion. The DM specifies his/her preferences by allocating two nonnegative comparison values so that their sum is 1. We measure and pinpoint possible inconsistency by inconsistency errors. We also compare the consistency of CJM and AHP trough simulation. Because preference judgments are always more or less imprecise or uncertain, we introduce a way to represent the uncertainty throu…
Does model consistency in business model innovation matter? A contingency-based approach
2017
Successful business model innovation requires managers to come up not only with new, but also with viable business models. To this end, it has been argued that business model consistency plays a vital role, as the internal fit of business model elements can generate reinforcing effects, thereby influencing performance and competitive advantage. Little research has been conducted to measure consistency and confirm these effects, especially within business model innovation. We tackle this issue by developing and testing a measurement of business model consistency, and investigate its relationship with business model innovation and its performance. We find evidence supporting the positive effe…
A Short Measure of Acceptability of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women: Development and Validation of the A-IPVAW-8 Scale
2021
Attitudes of acceptability of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) are considered one of the main risk factors of this type of violence. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a short version of the acceptability of IPVAW scale, the A-IPVAW-8, for large scale studies where space and time are limited. A panel of experts were asked to assess item content validity. Two samples were recruited to assemble an 8-item short version of the scale using automated test assembly, and to reassess the psychometric properties of the A-IPVAW-8 in an independent sample. Results showed that the A-IPVAW-8 had adequate internal consistency (α = .72-.76, ω = .73-.81), a stable one-factor la…
Simurgh
2021
The availability of non-volatile main memory (NVMM) has started a new era for storage systems and NVMM specific file systems can support extremely high data and metadata rates, which are required by many HPC and data-intensive applications. Scaling metadata performance within NVMM file systems is nevertheless often restricted by the Linux kernel storage stack, while simply moving metadata management to the user space can compromise security or flexibility. This paper introduces Simurgh, a hardware-assisted user space file system with decentralized metadata management that allows secure metadata updates from within user space. Simurgh guarantees consistency, durability, and ordering of updat…
German-Wide Interlaboratory Study Compares Consistency, Accuracy and Reproducibility of Whole-Genome Short Read Sequencing.
2020
We compared the consistency, accuracy and reproducibility of next-generation short read sequencing between ten laboratories involved in food safety (research institutes, state laboratories, universities and companies) from Germany and Austria. Participants were asked to sequence six DNA samples of three bacterial species (Campylobacter jejuni, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica) in duplicate, according to their routine in-house sequencing protocol. Four different types of Illumina sequencing platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq, iSeq, NovaSeq) and one Ion Torrent sequencing instrument (S5) were involved in the study. Sequence quality parameters were determined for all data sets and central…
Multistage Dynamics of International Environmental Agreements: Free-riding from Membership and Compliance*
2009
Abstract In dealing with the multistage dynamics of international environmental agreements (IEAs), it is necessary to analyze the dynamics of global emission level associated with the corresponding abatement process. We model multilateral collaboration among countries as a two-level coalitional game of heterogeneous players with a stepwise emission reduction over a finite and discretized period of time. The formed coalition is assumed to hold a leader's position in the game, and the players that did not join the agreement (free-riders) are assumed to accept a position of the followers. To analyze fulfillment of the emission reduction targets, we construct a time-consistent abatement scheme,…
About the Ghosh Model: Clarifications
2007
We examine the consistency of the Ghosh supply-d riven input-output model (SM) by respect to the traditional Leontief demand-drive n input-output model (LM); the variants considered are: primal and dual, quantity and value ; input prices are not considered. SM offers solutions of limited interest, being incapab le to separate quantities and prices or values and price indexes. Comparing the dual value SM to the primal of LM is wrong. Even if the agents are forced to buy inputs in SM, the interpre tation of SM as a centrally planned economy must be rejected but SM may serve for modeling interfirm relations or analyzing the structural interindustry change when the production function is not sp…
