Simultaneous optimization of harvest schedule and data quality

In many recent studies, the value of forest inventory information in harvest scheduling has been examined. In a previous paper, we demonstrated that making measurement decisions for stands for which the harvest decision is uncertain simultaneously with the harvest decisions may be highly profitable. In that study, the quality of additional measurements was not a decision variable, and the only options were between making no measurements or measuring perfect information. Search for Dark Matter Annihilations in the Sun with the 79-String IceCube Detector

We have performed a search for muon neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the center of the Sun with the 79-string configuration of the IceCube neutrino telescope. For the first time, the DeepCore sub-array is included in the analysis, lowering the energy threshold and extending the search to the austral summer. The 317 days of data collected between June 2010 and May 2011 are consistent with the expected background from atmospheric muons and neutrinos. Upper limits are therefore set on the dark matter annihilation rate, with conversions to limits on spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-proton cross-sections for WIMP masses in the range 20 - 5000 GeV. Modeling of Offshore Crane and Marine Craft in Wave Motion

Safe handling of heavy payloads in an offshore environment requires careful planning and depends on the interaction between a crane and a vessel. This paper investigates the coupled dynamics between a multipurpose crane with payload, and an offshore carrying vessel. A classical multi-body model is derived using holonomic constraints and Newton-Euler kinetics. The resulting index-3 system of differential-algebraic equation (DAE) is transformed into an index-1 system and solved using commonly used numerical ode solvers. It has been assumed until very recently that all long-range correlations are screened in three-dimensional melts of linear homopolymers on distances beyond the correlation length $\xi$ characterizing the decay of the density fluctuations. Summarizing simulation results obtained by means of a variant of the bond-fluctuation model with finite monomer excluded volume interactions and topology violating local and global Monte Carlo moves, we show that due to an interplay of the chain connectivity and the incompressibility constraint, both static and dynamical correlations arise on distances $r \gg \xi$. Amplitude- and truncated partial-wave analyses are combined into a single-channel method for extracting multipoles directly from measured data. In practice, we have created a two-step procedure which is fit to the same database: in the first step we perform an energy-independent amplitude analysis where continuity is achieved by constraining the amplitude phase, and the result of this first step is then taken as a constraint for the second step where a constrained, energy-independent, truncated partial-wave analysis is done. We generalize the notion of the 'noncommutative coupling constant' given by Kastler and Sch"ucker by dropping the constraint that it commute with the Dirac-operator. This leads essentially to the vanishing of the lower bound for the Higgsmass and of the upper bound for the W-mass.

Fully Covariant and Conformal Formulation of the Z4 System Compared to the BSSN Formulation in Spherical Symmetry

We have generalized a covariant and conformal version of the Z4 system of the Einstein equations by adopting a reference metric approach, that we denote as fCCZ4, well suited for curvilinear as well as Cartesian coordinates. We implement this formalism in spherical polar coordinates under the assumption of spherical symmetry using a partially-implicit Runge-Kutta (PIRK) method, without using any regularization scheme, and show that our code can evolve both vacuum and non-vacuum spacetimes without encountering instabilities. New solutions of the hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraints of quantum gravity from a highest weight loop representation

Abstract We introduce a highest weight type representation of the Rovelli-Smolin algebra of loop observables for quantum gravity. In terms of this representation, new solutions of the hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraints are given. Assuming the locality of the quantum hamiltonian constraint we show that any functional depending on the generalized link class of the disjoint union of arbitrary simple loops is a solution. Finally we argue that this is the general solution in the irreducible representation space.
