Use of pure vanadium and niobium/copper inserts for laser welding of titanium to stainless steel

2020

Abstract Niobium and vanadium have high metallurgical compatibility with titanium and therefore can be used as inserts to avoid the accumulation of brittle intermetallic phases such as Fe2Ti during the fusion welding of titanium alloys with steels. In the present study, the continuous double pass welding of 1 mm thick Ti-6Al-4V alloy and 316 L stainless steel plates through several mm wide pure vanadium or niobium insert was studied. In case of a vanadium insert, a beam offset on the vanadium was found to produce cold crack formation in vanadium/316 L melted zones containing more than 40 wt.% V despite the absence of σ phase. Whereas a centered beam position and offset on the steel side pro…

Tunable Eu2+ emission in KxNa1 − xLuS2 phosphors for white LED application

2016

Set of Eu2+-doped KxNa1 − xLuS2 phosphors (x = 0–1) in the form of transparent crystalline hexagonal platelets was successfully synthesized by chemical reaction under the flow of hydrogen sulfide. Their physical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance. Special attention was given to photoluminescence emission spectra under the 395 nm and 455 nm excitation aiming to obtain white emission with tunable color temperature. EPR method was employed to understand the Eu2+ incorporation and distribution in the KxNa1 − xLuS2 hosts. CIE xy-coordinates were calculated to compare effects o…

Numerical Reconstruction of Porous Architecture for Suspension Plasma Sprayed Coatings

2021

Abstract The porous architecture of coatings has a significant influence on the coating performances and thus should be properly designed for the intended applications. For simulating the coating properties, it is necessary to determine the numerical representation of the coating microstructure. In this study, YSZ coatings were manufactured by suspension plasma spray (SPS). Afterwards, the porous architecture of as-prepared coatings was investigated by the combination of three techniques, imaging analysis, Ultra Small Angle X-ray Scattering (USAXS), and X-ray transmission. A microstructural model for reconstructing the porous architecture of the SPS coating was subsequently computed accordi…

A simple interpretation of the effect of the polymer type on the properties of PMBs for road paving applications

2018

Abstract The paper presents the results of the rheological characterisation of polymer-modified bitumen for paving applications. In order to find a simple interpretation of the influence of polymer type on the blends produced, in this study high density and low density polyethylene (PE) with different chemical properties were used, as well as ethylene-vinyl acetate. The chemical characteristics of the base bitumen and the polymers used were determined by means of SARA analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, FTIR, respectively. The morphology of the produced blends was investigated by means of fluorescent light optic microscopy, while the mechanical properties were investigated…

Structure-properties relationships in melt reprocessed PLA/hydrotalcites nanocomposites

2017

In this work the effect of multiple reprocessing was studied on molecular structure, morphology and properties of poly(lactic acid)/hydrotalcites (PLA/HT) nanocomposites compared to neat PLA. In addition, the influence of two different kinds of HT – organically modified (OM-HT) and unmodified (U-HT) – was evaluated. Thermo-mechanical degradation was induced by means of five subsequent extrusion cycles. The performance of the recycled materials was investigated by mechanical and rheological tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), intrinsic viscosity measurements and SEM observation. The results indicated that the best morphology was achieved in the systems incorporating OM-HT. On inc…

Processing – morphology – property relationships of polyamide 6/polyethylene blend–clay nanocomposites

2013

In this work, we studied the effect of the method of preparation and of reprocessing on the morphology and, con- sequently, on the physical properties of polyamide 6 (PA6)/ high density polyethylene (HDPE)-clay nanocomposite blends in the presence of different compatibilizers. In particular, the nanocomposites were obtained by melt mixing using a co- rotating twin screw extruder (E1). The blends thus obtained were re-extruded (E2) under the same operating conditions. Moreover, blends with the same final composition were produced using a masterbatch of the compatibilizer with the clay prepared in a separated stage in a batch mixer (MB). All the materials were characterized by scanning electr…

Structure-properties relationships of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) filled PS nanocomposites

2012

The polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additivated polystyrene (PS) based nanocomposites were pre- pared by melt processing and the structure-properties relationships of the POSS-PS systems were compared to those of the neat PS. In order to investigate the effect of these structural parameters on the final properties of the polymer nanocompos- ites, five different kinds of POSS samples were used, in particular, POSS with different inorganic cage and with different organic pendent groups. The rheological investigation suggests clearly that the POSS acts as a plasticizer and that the processability of the PS was positively modified. The affinity between the POSS samples and the PS ma…

Accelerated weathering of PP based nanocomposites: Effect of the presence of maleic anhydryde grafted polypropylene

2013

Polymer nanocomposites are currently a topic of great interest. The increasing importance they are gaining also in the standpoint of industrial applications, is giving concerns regarding their environmental stability and, in general, their behaviour in outdoor applications, under direct solar irradiation. Papers available in the literature have highlighted the different influences of different nanosized fillers, in particular clay-based nanofillers; however, few data are available regarding other nanosized fillers. Furthermore, the research on polymer nanocomposites has clearly pointed out that the use of compatibilizers is required to improve the mechanical performance and the dispersion o…
