The Acts project: track reconstruction software for HL-LHC and beyond

2019

The reconstruction of trajectories of the charged particles in the tracking detectors of high energy physics experiments is one of the most difficult and complex tasks of event reconstruction at particle colliders. As pattern recognition algorithms exhibit combinatorial scaling to high track multiplicities, they become the largest contributor to the CPU consumption within event reconstruction, particularly at current and future hadron colliders such as the LHC, HL-LHC and FCC-hh. Current algorithms provide an extremely high standard of physics and computing performance and have been tested on billions of simulated and recorded data events. However, most algorithms were first written 20 year…

In this paper, we present a method for automated estimation of a human face given a skull remain. Our proposed method is based on three statistical models. A volumetric (tetrahedral) skull model encoding the variations of different skulls, a surface head model encoding the head variations, and a dense statistic of facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT). All data are automatically derived from computed tomography (CT) head scans and optical face scans. In order to obtain a proper dense FSTT statistic, we register a skull model to each skull extracted from a CT scan and determine the FSTT value for each vertex of the skull model towards the associated extracted skin surface. The FSTT values at p…

A Neural Network-Based Algorithm for 3D Multispectral Scanning Applied to Multimedia

2005

We describe a new stereoscopic system based on a multispectral camera and an LCD-Projector. The novel concept we want to show consists in the use of multispectral information for 3D-scenes reconstruction. Each 3D point is linked to a curve representing the spectral reflectance. This latter is a physical representation of the matter and presents the advantage over color information, which is perceptual, that it is independent from both illuminant and observer. We first present an easy methodology to geometrically and spectrally calibrate such a system. We then describe an algorithm for recovering 3D coordinates based on triangulation and an algorithm for reflectance curves reconstruction bas…

Probabilistic Flood Hazard Mapping Using Bivariate Analysis Based on Copulas

2017

This study presents a methodology to extract probabilistic flood hazard maps in an area subject to flood risk, taking into account uncertainties in the definition of design hydrographs. Particularly, the authors present a new method to produce probabilistic inundation and flood hazard maps in which the hydrological input (i.e., synthetic flood design event) to a 2D hydraulic model has been obtained by using a bivariate statistical analysis (copulas) to generate flood peak discharges and volumes. This study also aims to quantify the contribution of boundary conditions’ uncertainty in order to evaluate the effect of this uncertainty source on probabilistic flood hazard mapping. Different comb…

On the way to ‘zero waste’ management: Recovery potential of elements, including rare earth elements, from fine fraction of waste

2018

Abstract Existing schemes of solid waste handling have been improved implementing advanced systems for recovery and reuse of various materials. Nowadays, the ‘zero waste’ concept is becoming more topical through the reduction of disposed waste. Recovery of metals, nutrients and other materials that can be returned to the material cycles still remain as a challenge for future. Landfill mining (LFM) is one of the approaches that can deal with former dumpsites, and derived materials may become important for circular economy within the concept ‘beyond the zero waste’. Perspectives of material recovery can include recycling of critical industrial metals, including rare earth elements (REEs). The…

Determination of selected phthalates by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in mural paintings from Palermo (Italy)

2013

Abstract Phthalate esters for decades, and probably even now, were used as softeners in water-based paintings. In general, these compounds are dangerous owing to their carcinogenicity and reproductive effects. Phthalates are not chemically but only physically bound to the matrices, hence, they may be leached into the environment and are ubiquitously found in environmental matrices. Considering that, construction is one of most important fields in Europe, and probably worldwide, with respect to its economic, technological and environmental impact. In the present work the phthalate esters content of several mural paintings was evaluated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Because…

Influence of carbon to nitrogen ratio on nitrous oxide emission in an Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge Membrane BioReactor plant

2018

Abstract In this study a University of Cape Town (UCT) Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) Membrane BioReactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant was monitored in terms of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The short term effect on the N2O emission due to the influent carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio variation (C/N ratios of 2, 5 and 10 gCOD/gN) was evaluated. Since in a previous study, the effect of the C/N ratio was studied in the same system without biofilm (UCT-MBR configuration) the main aim here was to investigate the role of biofilms on N2O emissions. Under all the investigated C/N ratios, the N2O fluxes and the average emission factors were lower than that of previous studies with…

The pumice aggregates of Lipari Island (Aeolian Isles-Italy)

1984

In the Island of Lipari (Aeolian Archipelago) there is a large pumice deposit. The pumice is exploited in an open-cast mine through mechanical means and taken to crushing and screening plants. Aggregates for urban construction, gravel and powder are obtained. The aggregates are used in the manufacture of light concrete. Nowadays the possibility of using pumice aggregates in order to obtain light structural concrete is being studied.

A Smoothed Particle Image Reconstruction method

2010

Many image processing techniques work with scattered data distribution usually employing grid based methods leading to numerical problems. To address this issue, a numerical method avoiding mesh generation can be used. Such a method performs an integral representation by means of a smoothing kernel function and, in the discrete formulation, involves domain particles. In this paper the meshless Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method is proposed in the Image Reconstruction context and a new computational strategy called Smoothed Particle Image Reconstruction is presented; the new method is based on a scatter approach and several innovative ideas are introduced in order to improve the computat…
