A closed form procedure for the design of longitudinal bars in RC sections subjected to axial load and biaxial bending

This paper presents an analytical procedure for the design of the longitudinal reinforcement in reinforced concrete rectangular sections subjected to axial load and biaxial bending moment. The integration of the equilibrium equations is performed in analytical form for the case of uniaxial moment, including the effect of the reinforcement placed on the sides of the section and adopting code-based constitutive laws for steel and concrete. The design of reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing for retrofitting substandard columns is a common practice when approaching the structural rehabilitation design of existing structures. In this framework, international technical codes suggest to assume the hypothesis of monolithic section and finally affecting the deduced performances by some empirical factors, known in the literature as monolithicity factors. The paper reports the results of an International Design Workshop that every year is organized by E-D’ARC+ (a university students Association) in collaboration with some professors of the Courses of Building Engi¬neering and Architecture of the University of Palermo. Lithuania is situated in a highly forested Northeastern Europe area and has a variety of wooden buildings. Among the wooden structures we enumerate the religious buildings, churches and bell towers, rich of historic values, presenting different forms and sizes, a complex design and stratified construction phases. The present work aims to study this interesting topic and intends not only to analyze the architectural typology but even more the technological and structural aspects, that had suggested the most influences on building techniques during the centuries.

The Sicilian common typological form of rural estate is the masseria, typical of the latifundium. More particularly, it is a large fortified farm built to control and manage a vast land-property, the old fiefdoms. This paper will analyse the masseria Calcibaida as an eminent example of the mentioned Sicilian rural world. Calcibaida is located in the territory of Caltavuturo, in the centre of Sicily, within the mountain landscape of the Madonie mountains. The Sicilian land tenure was always characterized by the presence of latifundium. Such a land exploitation intimately influenced not only the farming techniques but also the population identity and farms’ typology. The Sicilian (and south-Italian) common typological form of rural estate is the masseria. More particularly, it is a large fortified farm built to control and manage a vast land-property, the old fiefdoms. In recent years, the development of additive construction methods for the production of physical models starting from computerized ones has led to a return from the digital domain to the material one. A new "digital materiality" associated with 3D printing makes it possible to extend the imaginary of the contemporary architectural scene by consolidating the strong relationship between research and innovation. 3D printing is a rapid prototyping technique that allows the direct transposition of the digital model into its analogous material using a computer controlled nozzle to deposit small doses of material and compose the figure in space.
