Stress transfer mechanism investigation in hybrid steel trussed-concrete beams by push-out tests
2014
Abstract Results of push-out tests carried out on Hybrid Steel Trussed–Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) before and after the concrete casting are presented and interpreted. Firstly, in order to check the ability of weldings before casting, tensile tests were performed on specimens reproducing different types of welded joints. Simplified design formulae were used to predict their ultimate strength. Secondly, results obtained by push-out tests on specimen representative of the beam before and after the concrete casting are presented and discussed. Finally, simplified analytical models proposed by the current European building code were adapted to the specific typology to roughly predict the ultimate s…
FEM analysis of push-out test response of Hybrid Steel Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs)
2015
Abstract Aiming to investigate the steel truss–concrete stress transfer mechanism in Hybrid Steel Trussed–Concrete Beams (HSTCBs), a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear Finite Element (FE) model is developed. The constitutive relationship of the steel composing the plates and the rebars is modeled by means of a quadri-linear law, while the concrete behavior is defined by means of a Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model, suitable for modeling concrete and brittle materials. Two main failure mechanisms are considered, namely the tensile cracking and the compressive crushing. In order to accurately grasp the complicate dowel and bond phenomena arising at the steel–concrete interface, a 3D solid…
Strength and strain enhancements of concrete columns confined with FRP sheets
2004
The compressive behavior up to failure of short concrete members reinforced with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is investigated. Rectangular cross-sections are analysed by means of a simplified elastic model, able also to explain stress-concentration. The model allows one to evaluate the equivalent uniform confining pressure in ultimate conditions referred to the effective confined cross-section and to the effective stresses in FRP along the sides of section; consequently, it makes it possible to determine ultimate strain and the related bearing capacity of the confined member corresponding to FRP failure. The effect of local reinforcements constitute by single strips applied at corners bef…
Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinges for Steel Frames
2017
The paper concerns the proposal of a new special device for steel frames that can be utilized as external constraint as well as internal one connecting the structure beam elements. The device is designed as a rigid perfectly plastic hinge characterized by suitably chosen stiffness and resistance. Its constituting material is steel. The elastic stiffness and the limit resistance, treated as independent of each other, are fixed with the aim of satisfying special features required to the structure. The proposed device is thought as a sandwich section with wing thickness appropriately variable. Its dimensions are designed so that it can exhibit the fixed independent stiffness and limit resistan…
A tool for a first analysis of architectural façades
1997
Abstract This work presents a tool for analysing the figurative structure of architectural facades. The procedure begins by singling out the elementary shapes which make up the facade image; it detects and identifies them as “area objects”, even if present in combination in virtual or mental form and groups them into classes of equal objects. A second step is the analysis of the inner structure of the classes: equidistant, arithmetical and geometrical sequences, or alternate distances are distinguished. The procedure ends by singling out the symmetries which structure the facade image and displaying them, pointing out their implied hierarchy through a thickness differentiation.
The integration of information technologies in the knowledge based organizations
2016
Relations between the users' expertise, complexity of tasks to be solved by knowledge-based organizations and mission of smart information systems, is a multi-dimensional structure that should provide the necessary conceptual framework of sustainable integrated smart development. The users of smart information systems face a variety of problems, such as: system access, data recovery, identifying and retrieving a specific document and its contents, and difficulties associated with understanding and interpreting of the used system on stages and methods following to be used, respectively problems on understanding the meaning of information provided. Using smart information systems and smart da…
Feeding, cooking, sharing : a brief social history of food
2020
This work addresses the food system as a complex structure connected to the environment, like a living organism. It uses the contributions from multiple fields (including anthropology, nutritional, medicine, and economics) to establish connections between analytically disparate fields in order to highlight their transformations over time and space. It also studies social organisation over millions of years to understand the synergy between the environment, extraction technologies, economic and political structures, and the resulting cooking environments (each with their own social construction of tastes) as conditioning factors for sickness and death. In short, it delves into the anthropolo…
Materials Communicating with the BIM: Aims and First Results of the McBIM Project
2019
This paper introduces McBIM, a French national research project working on on-line monitoring on concrete structure. This project gathers 3 french laboratories (the CRAN, LAAS and LIB) associated with one company (360SmartConnect/FINAO SAS) that are working together from 2018 to 2021. It proposes 1) to design a “communicating concrete”, made of concrete equipped with embedded low-energy wireless microsensor network, able to manage and exchange data using BIM standards, and 2) to demonstrate the usefulness of this approach across several building lifecycle phases, namely the manufacturing, construction and exploitation phases for structural health monitoring. The paper will first start by in…
Digital Technologies for virtual recomposition. The case study of Serpotta stuccoes.
2014
The matter that lies beneath the smooth and shining surface of stuccoes of the Serpotta family, who used to work in Sicily from 1670 to 1730, has been thoroughly studied in previous papers, disclosing the deep, even if empirical, knowledge of materials science that guided the artists in creating their masterworks. In this work the attention is focused on the solid perspective and on the scenographic sculpture by Giacomo Serpotta, who is acknowledged as the leading exponent of the School. The study deals with some particular works of the artist, the so-called “teatrini” (Toy Theater), made by him for the San Lorenzo Oratory in Palermo. On the basis of archive documents and previous analogica…
Growth patterns of the topshell Phorcus lineatus (da Costa, 1778) in northern Iberia deduced from shell sclerochronology
2019
Combined shell growth pattern and oxygen isotope analysis has become a powerful approach in palaeoclimate and archaeological studies for reconstructing palaeoclimate conditions and littoral exploitation patterns, respectively. Recent investigations have shown that the gastropod Phorcus lineatus (da Costa, 1778) forms its shell in conditions of near equilibrium with the oxygen isotope signature of the seawater environment, demonstrating the utility of this species for reconstruction of sea surface temperature and determination of the season of harvest in archaeological studies. In contrast, the shell growth patterns of this species have received virtually no attention despite providing infor…
