Masonry Compressive Strength Prediction Using Artificial Neural Networks

2019

The masonry is not only included among the oldest building materials, but it is also the most widely used material due to its simple construction and low cost compared to the other modern building materials. Nevertheless, there is not yet a robust quantitative method, available in the literature, which can reliably predict its strength, based on the geometrical and mechanical characteristics of its components. This limitation is due to the highly nonlinear relation between the compressive strength of masonry and the geometrical and mechanical properties of the components of the masonry. In this paper, the application of artificial neural networks for predicting the compressive strength of m…

Explainable Post-Occupancy Evaluation Using a Humanoid Robot

2020

The paper proposes a new methodological approach for evaluating the comfort condition using the concept of explainable post occupancy to make the user aware of the environmental state in which (s)he works. Such an approach was implemented on a humanoid robot with social capabilities that aims to enforce human engagement to follow recommendations. The humanoid robot helps the user to position the sensors correctly to acquire environmental measures corresponding to the temperature, humidity, noise level, and illuminance. The distribution of the last parameter due to its high variability is also retrieved by the simulation software Dialux. Using the post occupancy evaluation method, the robot …

Constructive Variants for Personalised Formwork

2018

Abstract The aim of this paper is to explore the possibility of working with a personalized reusable composite formwork in order to obtain architectural shapes for roof and wall elements without material loss. Starting with the analysis of the market needs, the definition of the functions and continuing with the conceptual and technical solution proposals, we created a formwork variant that can be reused for different complex shapes. The researches set on sight different variations of the material used, their thickness and the contact surface given by the support elements.

Approximate 3-Dimensional Electrical Impedance Imaging

2001

We discuss a new approach to three-dimensional electrical impedance imaging based on a reduction of the information to be demanded from a reconstruction algorithm. Images are obtained from a single measurement by suitably simplifying the geometry of the measuring chamber and by restricting the nature of the object to be imaged and the information required from the image. In particular we seek to establish the existence or non-existence of a single object (or a small number of objects) in a homogeneous background and the location of the former in the (x,y)-plane defined by the measuring electrodes. Given in addition the conductivity of the object rough estimates of its position along the z-a…

Iteratively Learning a Liver Segmentation Using Probabilistic Atlases: Preliminary Results

2016

This works deals with the concept of liver segmentation by using a priori information based on probabilistic atlases and segmentation learning based of previous steps. A probabilistic atlas is here understood as a probability or membership map that tells how likely is that a point belongs to a shape drawn from the shape distribution at hand. We devise a procedure to segment Perfusion Magnetic Resonance liver images that combines both: a probabilistic atlas of the liver and a segmentation algorithm based on global information of previous simpler segmentation steps, local information from close segmented slices and finally a mathematical morphology procedure, namely viscous reconstruction, to…

Querying and reasoning over large scale building data sets

2016

International audience; The architectural design and construction domains work on a daily basis with massive amounts of data. Properly managing, exchanging and exploiting these data is an ever ongoing challenge in this domain. This has resulted in large semantic RDF graphs that are to be combined with a significant number of other data sets (building product catalogues, regulation data, geometric point cloud data, simulation data, sensor data), thus making an already huge dataset even larger. Making these big data available at high performance rates and speeds and into the correct (intuitive) formats is therefore an incredibly high challenge in this domain. Yet, hardly any benchmark is avai…

Design optimization of mooring system: An application to a vessel-shaped offshore fish farm

2019

Abstract Design optimization of mooring systems of offshore floating structures is a challenging task, partly because of the large number of design variables, complicated design constraints, nonlinear system behavior, and time-consuming numerical simulations. For engineering designs, efficient yet accurate approaches are needed. This paper proposes an integrated optimization methodology for design of mooring systems. The methodology integrates the design of experiments, screening analysis, time-domain simulations, and a metamodel-based optimization procedure. To demonstrate the methodology, the mooring system of a vessel-shaped offshore fish farm was designed considering the ultimate limit …

Passenger Car Equivalents for Heavy Vehicles at Roundabouts. a Synthesis Review

2019

Passenger Car Equivalents (PCEs in the following) are used to transform a mixed fleet of vehicles into a fleet of equivalent passenger cars and to analyze capacity and level-of-service of roads and intersections. Most roundabouts guidelines propose constant values for PCEs but a single PCE value can result improper under heterogeneous traffic conditions. PCEs should be vary with traffic and road conditions and consequently PCEs applied to undersaturated traffic conditions can overestimate the heavy vehicle effect or be not sensitive to the traffic level or characteristics of heavy vehicles. Compared to other at-grade intersections, the interaction between the operational performances of the…

A new Adaptive and Progressive Image Transmission Approach using Function Superpositions

2010

International audience; We present a novel approach to adaptive and progressive image transmission, based on the decomposition of an image into compositions and superpositions of monovariate functions. The monovariate functions are iteratively constructed and transmitted, one after the other, to progressively reconstruct the original image: the progressive transmission is performed directly in the 1D space of the monovariate functions and independently of any statistical properties of the image. Each monovariate function contains only a fraction of the pixels of the image. Each new transmitted monovariate function adds data to the previously transmitted monovariate functions. After each tra…

Comparing Tangible and Fully Virtual Haptic Systems for HMI Studies in Simulated Driving Situations

2019

International audience; The contribution of tangible and intangible feedback is compared for virtual tactile car Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) design, to measure their performance both in static conditions and while driving. A subjectively calibrated transparent glass provides tangible passive haptics, and visual cues are used to study sensory substitution-based intangible interactions. The results show that the performance of the subjects was significantly improved in driving conditions as they interacted faster, more accurately and with a higher satisfaction. In addition, our findings highlight that the contribution of tangible systems is significantly lower in driving conditions, raisin…
