Towards a deeper understanding of the inhibition mechanism of a new 1,2,3-triazole derivative for mild steel corrosion in the hydrochloric acid solut…

2020

Abstract The corrosion inhibition effect of a new synthesized heterocycle 1,2,3-triazole, namely(1-p-tolyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl) methanol (TTM) was studied in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution by using both experimental and theoretical techniques. The inhibitory action of the TTM was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) at various temperatures (298–333 K). PDP experiments revealed that the TTM behaved as mixed type inhibitor by decreasing both anodic and cathodic corrosion densities. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements confirmed that the studied inhibitor can suppress mild steel corrosion effectively in acidic solution with an inhibition efficiency of 90% a…

Physisorption Instabilities during Dynamic Langmuir Wetting

1994

Continuous dynamic Langmuir wetting of lipid monolayers can create regular stripe patterns on the solid substrate surface. Monolayers doped with minor amounts of fluorescence dye may be deposited in stripes of alternating high and low dye concentration. In case of pure monolayers stripes are observed with AFM. The striations run normal to the dipping direction and have widths of typically several micrometres and distances varying from 1 to ≈ 100 μm. The stripe widths, distances, and fluorescence contrast depend on deposition speed, surface pressure, substrate surface preparation, and dye concentration. The patterns probably result from physisorption (meniscus) instabilities caused by a feed…

Legal aspects of sexually transmitted diseases: abuse, partner notification and prosecution

2012

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), with special emphasis to HIV infection, involve legal and ethical issues regarding informed consent to submit to a diagnostic, observance of professional secrecy in regard to partner(s) and community; legal troubles of particular difficulties are related to STD involving minors; lastly, physicians must be able to recognize the state of so called medical necessity. Knowledge and awareness of these related obligations are crucial to STD in medical practice; it is also important to allow for proper protection of victims of suspected sexual abuse under observation of healthcare. With regard to this aspect should be emphasized that violence against women and…

Guided hierarchical co-assembly of soft patchy nanoparticles.

2013

Different polymers can be used in combination to produce coexisting nanoparticles of different symmetry and tailored to co-assemble into well-ordered binary and ternary hierarchical structures. There is considerable practical interest in developing the tools to fabricate multicomponent artificial systems that mimic the hierarchical ordering seen in the natural world — complex biomaterials can be assembled from the simple but precisely defined molecular building blocks. Andre Groschel and colleagues have developed a bottom-up approach that's a step in that direction. Previously they designed simple linear polymers that self-assemble in solution to produce monodisperse nanoparticles with well…

Impact of contact lens material and design on the ocular surface.

2018

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact on the ocular surface of a daily disposable hydrogel contact lens with high water content compared with two silicone hydrogel daily disposable lenses of lower water content. METHODS: The hydrogel lens assessed was made from nesofilcon A and the silicone hydrogel lenses were made of delefilcon A and stenfilcon A. Contact lens thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters such as tear film osmolarity, tear meniscus area and central corneal thickness were also assessed. Optical quality was analysed for all cases by means of wavefront aberrometry. RESULTS: The nesofilcon A was shown to be the thinnest lens…

Light transmission and ultraviolet protection of contact lenses under artificial illumination

2016

Purpose: To determine the spectral transmission of contact lenses (CLs), with and without an ultraviolet (UV) filter to evaluate their capacity for protection under UV radiation from artificial illumination (incandescent, fluorescent, xenon (Xe) lamps, or white LEDs (light-emitting diode)). Methods: The transmission curves of nine soft CLs were obtained by using a PerkinElmer Lambda 35 UV-vis spectrophotometer. A CIE standard was used for the emission spectra of incandescent and fluorescent lamps, and Xe lamps and white LEDs were measured by using an International Light Technologies ILT-950 spectroradiometer. Results: Five of the nine soft CLs analysed state that they incorporate UV filters…

Influence of temperature and NaCl on the release in aqueous liquid media of aroma compounds encapsulated in edible films

2012

This work analyses the release of n-hexanal and D-limonene from edible films, previously encapsulated in the iota-carrageenan matrix (with and without lipid). Both volatile compounds have different physicochemical properties. The effect of temperature (25 degrees C and 37 degrees C) and dissolution medium (water and 0.9% NaCl) on the release and retention of aroma compounds were studied. Hydrophobicity and wettability properties of active iota-carrageenan films were also studied and they were related with the internal and surface microstructure of films. Results highlight that D-limonene is encapsulated in the lipid phase of the films decreasing the release in the salt medium. D-limonene, t…
