Effect of a Passive Tuned Mass Damper on Offshore Installation of a Wind Turbine Nacelle

2021

Abstract Although the installation of offshore wind turbines takes place in calm seas, successful mating of wind turbine components can be challenging due to the relative motions between the two mating parts. This work investigates the effect of a passive tuned mass damper on the mating processes of a nacelle for a 10-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine. A nacelle with lifting wires and a monopile with a mass damper are respectively modelled using the multibody formulation in the HAWC2 program. A single mass damper is tuned to target at the first natural period of the monopile and is coupled to the main program using a dynamic link library. Afterwards, numerical simulations were carried out…

Power profiles in multifocal contact lenses with variable multifocal zone

2016

BACKGROUND The power profile of multifocal contact lenses has been demonstrated to report important information that could be used during the fitting process. The aim of this work is to describe the power profile of a recent set of gas permeable multifocal contact lenses as a function of the pupil radius. METHODS The measured multifocal contact lenses have a centre-distance design, and are available with five distance-vision diameters (XS, S, M, L and XL) and two different additions: Type A (up to +2.00 D) and Type B (up to +2.50 D). The optical device NIMO TR1504 (Lambda-X, Nivelles, Belgium) was used to obtain the power profile measurements. The optical lens power distribution as a functi…

Oxygen permeability of hydrogel contact lenses with organosilicon moieties

2002

Oxygen transport through two extended wear (day and night) hydrogel contact lenses that contain organosilicon moieties (balafilcon A and lotrafilcon A) was studied in the hydrate (hydrogel) and dry (xerogel) states. The water uptake increased the oxygen permeability [(Dk)app] and transmissibility [Dk/L(av)] coefficients of the dry materials by about 70%. The (Dk)app for the hydrated lenses was determined following the so-called stack procedure. The values obtained were 107 +/- 4 barrer for balafilcon A and 141 +/- 5 barrer for lotrafilcon A, about 5-10 times larger than those previously reported for conventional (without organosilicon moieties) extended wear hydrogels contact lenses. The Dk…

Power Profiles and In Vitro Optical Quality of Scleral Contact Lenses: Effect of the Aperture and Power

2017

To assess the power profile and in vitro optical quality of scleral contact lenses with different powers as a function of the optical aperture. The mini and semiscleral contact lenses (Procornea) were measured for five powers per design. The NIMO TR-1504 (Lambda-X) was used to assess the power profile and Zernike coefficients of each contact lens. Ten measurements per lens were taken at 3- and 6-mm apertures. Furthermore, the optical quality of each lens was described in Zernike coefficients, modulation transfer function, and point spread function (PSF). A convolution of each lens PSF with an eye-chart image was also computed. The optical power fluctuated less than 0.5 diopters (D) along th…

Optical quality of rotationally symmetrical contact lenses derived from their power profiles.

2017

To present a methodology for evaluating the optical quality of rotationally symmetrical contact lenses (CLs) from a single power profile.Simulated rotationally symmetrical power profiles corresponding to different CLs designs (monofocal, two-zone center-near bifocal, and four-zone center-distance bifocal) were used to calculate the wavefront error profile by means of numerical integration. Then, each lens wavefront error profile was spun around the center to obtain the lens wavefront error surface. From the surface, monochromatic optical transfer functions (OTF), simulated images and the visual Strehl ratio based on the OTF (VSOTF) were obtained for different distances and pupil sizes (3 an…

Organic Thin-Film Transistors with Enhanced Sensing Capabilities

2009

Organic thin-film transistors, used as sensing devices, have been attracting quite a considerable interest lately as they offer advantages such as multi parameter behaviour and possibility to be quite easily molecularly tuned for the detection of specific analytes. Here, a study on the dependences of the devices responses on important parameters such as the active layer thickness and its morphology as well as on the transistor channel length is presented. To introduce the least number of variables the system chosen for this study is quite a simple and well assessed one being based on a thiophene oligomer active layer exposed to 1-butanol vapours.

Supination control increases performance in sideward cutting movements in tennis.

2013

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of tennis shoe characteristics on performance during sideward cutting movements followed by direction changes. Five tennis players (age = 21.5 +/- 0.8 years, mass = 75.2 +/- 2.8 kg, and height = 1.78 +/- 0.05 m) participated in the study and 10 tennis shoes were tested. Several footwear mechanical parameters were analyzed: Shore A hardness, longitudinal and transverse flexibility, midsole height at heel, presence of heel counters, and weight. A force plate was used to measure the kinetic variables, and two video cameras were used to perform a three-dimensional photogrammetric analysis. Results revealed that subject-footwear interaction …

History of materials used for recording static and dynamic occlusal contact marks: a literature review

2011

In the discipline of prosthetic dentistry it is important not only to examine the occlusion, but to be able to record, store, and transfer the information. Over the years many occlusion testing materials have been used. It has been suggested the clinical recording and transfer of information using waxes and other occlusion recording materials have disadvantages relating to inaccuracy and problems of manipulation. Therefore, there has been introduction of many new systems for recording occlusion contacts to overcome such problems. The correct physiological recovery of occlusion posses as much a challenge as ever for every dentist and technician. Even the smallest high spots measuring just a …

Feldenkrais ‘Functional Integration’ Increases Body Contact Surface in the Supine Position: A Randomized-Controlled Experimental Study

2018

Feldenkrais ‘Functional Integration’ (FI) is a widely used type of body work with a focus on the continuous integration of body sensations and awareness with movement. The method is, amongst others, known for improving balance in aging populations, but also for its ability to relax muscles. With participants treated in the supine position FI is potentially changing the surface area of the body in contact with the surface on which a participant is lying. So far, no prior study has assessed this claim. We evaluated objectively and subjectively if a treatment with FI would induce changes in pressure and contact surface of the body on the mat. Thirty volunteers received an individual treatment …
