Superconducting tunneling spectroscopy on epitaxial UPd2Al3 thin films

Abstract Results of superconducting tunneling spectroscopy experiments performed on two different types of thin film planar junctions of the heavy-fermion compound UPd 2 Al 3 are presented. Cross-type junctions consist of the heavy-fermion base electrode, an insulating layer of native surface oxide and a metal counter electrode (Au or Ag). The contact resistance was only weakly temperature dependent down to the superconducting transition. In the superconducting regime a strongly reduced zero bias conductivity indicated the junction being of the superconductor-insulator-normal metal type. Microwave surface resistance of pristine and neutron-irradiated MgB2 samples in magnetic field

We report on the microwave surface resistance of two polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples; one consists of pristine material, the other has been irradiated at very high neutron fluence. It has already been reported that in the strongly irradiated sample the two gaps merge into a single value. The mw surface resistance has been measured in the linear regime as a function of the temperature and the DC magnetic field, at increasing and decreasing fields. The results obtained in the strongly irradiated sample are quite well justified in the framework of a generalized Coffey and Clem model, in which we take into account the field distribution inside the sample due to the critical state. Size dependence of the Josephson critical behavior in pyrolytic graphite TEM lamellae

We have studied the transport characteristics of TEM lamellae of different widths obtained from a graphite sample with electrical contacts at the edges of the embedded interfaces. The temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as the current-voltage characteristics, are compatible with the existence of Josephson-coupled superconducting regions. The transition temperature at which the Josephson behavior sets in decreases with a decreasing interface width and vanishes for widths below 200 nm. In a number of recent experiments it has been demonstrated that in ultra-narrow superconducting channels quantum fluctuations of the order parameter, alternatively called quantum phase slips, are responsible for the finite resistance well below the critical temperature. The acceptable agreement between those experiments and the models describing quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors has been established. However the very concept of the phase slip is justified when these fluctuations are the relatively rare events, meaning that the effective resistance of the system should be much smaller than the normal state equivalent. Sympathetic neurons can produce and respond to interleukin 6

Neuronal expression of cytokines is an area of active investigation in the contexts of development, disease, and normal neural function. Although cultured rat sympathetic neurons respond very weakly to exogenous interleukin 6 (IL-6), we find that addition of soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) and IL-6 enhances neuronal survival in the absence of nerve growth factor. Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies against IL-6 block these effects. Addition of IL-6 and sIL-6R also induces a subset of neuropeptide and transmitter synthetic enzyme mRNAs identical to that demonstrated for leukemia inhibitory factor, ciliary neurotrophic factor, and oncostatin M. Does Young's equation hold on the nanoscale? A Monte Carlo test for the binary Lennard-Jones fluid

When a phase-separated binary ($A+B$) mixture is exposed to a wall, that preferentially attracts one of the components, interfaces between A-rich and B-rich domains in general meet the wall making a contact angle $\theta$. Young's equation describes this angle in terms of a balance between the $A-B$ interfacial tension $\gamma_{AB}$ and the surface tensions $\gamma_{wA}$, $\gamma_{wB}$ between, respectively, the $A$- and $B$-rich phases and the wall, $\gamma _{AB} \cos \theta =\gamma_{wA}-\gamma_{wB}$. Improving surface detection on nanoindentation of compliant materials

Nanoindentation is a versatile tool for monitoring mechanical properties on a local scale. Accurate knowledge of a contact area, and therefore an initial contact, is however necessary for translating the force curve into sample mechanical properties. It is shown that methods for sensing an initial contact by depth sensing instruments (DSI) may be severely in error for compliant materials. With the hardware adopted in this work, the threshold is determined by the elastic modulus; hence the error potentially increases if the material becomes more compliant. A discriminant analysis of the call structure completely separates threeCorvus taxa (levaillantii andjaponensis of the ‘macrorhynchos group’,splendens) inhabiting the southern slopes of the Himalayas (Nepal, Kashmir). The acoustic differences are considered taxonomically relevant, indicating species boundaries. Therefore the Jungle Crows of lower and upper Nepal (contact zone at around 2,000 m) are assigned to two biospecies (C. japonensis andC. levaillantii), as is consistent with morphological, ecological and parasitological data.
