Effectiveness of omalizumab in patients 50 years and older with severe persistent allergic asthma.

2010

Omalizumab is approved for the treatment of severe allergic asthma. To compare the efficacy of omalizumab therapy in patients 50 years or older with patients younger than 50 years.Between November 2005 and November 2007 a total of 174 asthma patients 50 years or older (40.7% male, 51.1% taking oral corticosteroids, and mean [SD] serum IgE level of 315 [353] U/L) and 297 asthma patients younger than 50 years (40.0% male, 50.5% taking oral corticosteroids, and mean [SD] serum IgE level of 363 [431] U/L) who met the European Union criteria for add-on therapy with anti-IgE were treated prospectively with omalizumab for 4 months as part of 2 postmarketing surveillance trials.Compared with the pre…

Revising old principles of inhaled treatment in new fixed combinations for asthma.

2015

The major influencing factors on persistent asthma control are the selected treatment(s), the drug delivery route and patient's adherence to therapy, together with the influence of lifestyle (i.e. sedentary habit), comorbid conditions and specific asthma phenotypes. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in combination with a long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) are the gold standard for management of persistent asthma, with maximal local targeting and minimal systemic side effects. Several innovative inhaler devices have been developed for effective local drug administration and good patient compliance to therapy. Recently, a new ICS/LABA fixed combination, formulated with fluticasone propionate (FP) and …

Safety of tiotropium/olodaterol in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: pooled analysis of three large, 52-week, randomized clinical trials.

2018

Abstract Background An extensive clinical trial program supports the efficacy and safety of tiotropium/olodaterol in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We examined the safety of tiotropium/olodaterol compared with tiotropium in a large population of patients, focusing on cardiovascular and respiratory events. Methods Patients (n = 9942) who received once-daily tiotropium/olodaterol 5/5 μg or tiotropium 5 μg (via Respimat®) in TONADO 1 & 2 and DYNAGITO were included. The number of patients and exposure-adjusted rate of events are presented for adverse events (AEs), serious AEs (SAEs), AEs leading to discontinuation, and cardiovascular and respiratory events. Findings Fewer patient…

Withdrawal of inhaled corticosteroids in COPD: A meta-analysis

2017

Background Conflicting findings exist on the benefit of withdrawal of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We performed a quantitative synthesis in order to assess real impact of ICS discontinuation in COPD patients. Methods We carried out a meta-analysis via random-effects model on the available clinical evidence to evaluate the effect of ICS discontinuation in COPD. Randomized clinical trials and observational real-life studies investigating the effects of ICS withdrawal on the risk of COPD exacerbation, lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s [FEV1]) and quality of life (St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire [SGRQ]) were identified by sear…

Unique continuation property and Poincar inequality for higher order fractional Laplacians with applications in inverse problems

2020

We prove a unique continuation property for the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^s$ when $s \in (-n/2,\infty)\setminus \mathbb{Z}$. In addition, we study Poincar\'e-type inequalities for the operator $(-\Delta)^s$ when $s\geq 0$. We apply the results to show that one can uniquely recover, up to a gauge, electric and magnetic potentials from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the higher order fractional magnetic Schr\"odinger equation. We also study the higher order fractional Schr\"odinger equation with singular electric potential. In both cases, we obtain a Runge approximation property for the equation. Furthermore, we prove a uniqueness result for a partial data problem of the $d$-…

Including long-distance effects in theKL−KSmass splitting

1990

In the framework of the standard model we propose an approach to the computation of the {ital K}{sub {ital L}}-{ital K}{sub {ital S}} mass difference which does not rely on an effective local Hamiltonian. Using partial conservation of axial-vector current, low-momentum Ward identities, and working at leading order in 1/{ital N}{sub {ital c}}, we relate box diagrams to others where strong interactions can be resummed. After subtracting the {ital K}-to-vacuum transitions, an expression involving only hadronic quantities is obtained. A numerical evaluation is performed by using a method of analytic continuation from the high-energy behavior given by QCD. The resulting contribution is found sma…

Comparison between two strictly local QCD sum rules

1989

Two strictly local QCD sum rules, analytic extrapolation by conformal mapping and analytic continuation by duality, are developed and presented in full detail. They allow the extrapolation of the QCD amplitude to a single point near zero in the complex {ital q}{sup 2} plane. Being orthogonal to the usual QCD sum rules, they present a drastic enlargement of phenomenological applications. In addition, the stability of both methods is shown explicitly, a fact which makes them particularly reliable. The difference between the two methods is illustrated in connection with the determination of the hadronic ({ital g}{minus}2) factor of the muon. Their effectiveness is demonstrated in the calculati…

Method of analytic continuation by duality in QCD: Beyond QCD sum rules

1986

We present the method of analytic continuation by duality which allows the approximate continuation of QCD amplitudes to small values of the momentum variables where direct perturbative calculations are not possible. This allows a substantial extension of the domain of applications of hadronic QCD phenomenology. The method is illustrated by a simple example which shows its essential features.
