1. Human isolated bronchi have been investigated as fresh tissue or after storage (7 and 30 days) at -196 degrees C in foetal calf serum containing 1.8 M dimethyl sulphoxide. 2. After cryopreservation, the maximal contractile response to acetylcholine (3 mM) was reduced (approximately 25%) but the difference did not reach significance statistically. The purpose of this study was investigate tendon displacement patterns in non-surgically treated patients 14 months after acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) and to classify patients into groups based on their Achilles tendon (AT) displacement patterns. Twenty patients were tested. This study was designed to examine the force and activation levels of elbow flexor muscles during preactivated eccentric, concentric and isometric actions.Force, average EMG (aEMG), and the EMG power spectrum were investigated at different constant movement velocities (1 rad x s(-1), 2 rad x s(-1), 3 rad x s(-1), and 4 rad x s(-1)) at different joint angles.Average force at a 110 degree elbow angle was lower and aEMG was higher in concentric actions as compared with eccentric and isometric actions. The mechanical efficiency of positive work was studied in six subjects performing three different types of exercises. On the first occasion the subjects ran on a motor-driven treadmill at 3.33 m s-1; the second and the third exercises consisted of performing rhythmical vertical jumps for 1 min both in rebound (RJ) and no-rebound (NRJ) conditions. The mechanical efficiency calculated in NRJ, which reflects only the conversion of biochemical energy into mechanical work, was found to be lower than the corresponding observation in RJ, 17.2 vs. 27.8% (P less than 0.001), respectively. Internal and external mechanical work, energy consumption and mechanical efficiency were studied in constant-load ergometer bicycling at five different power outputs below, equal to, and above the aerobic (AerT) and anaerobic (AnT) thresholds. The aim of the present study was to estimate the damping coefficient (B factor) of the elbow flexor muscles during both eccentric and concentric muscle actions. We used a muscle model consisting of a viscous damper associated in parallel with a contractile component, both in series with an elastic component. The viscous damper allowed the concentric loss and the eccentric gain of force to be modelled. The present study was designed to explore how the interaction between the fascicles and tendinous tissues is involved in storage and utilization of elastic energy during human walking. Eight male subjects walked with a natural cadence (1.4 ± 0.1 m/s) on a 10-m-long force plate system. In vivo techniques were employed to record the Achilles tendon force and to scan real-time fascicle lengths for two muscles (medial gastrocnemius and soleus).
