ECG-GATED MULTIDETECTOR COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE POSTOPERATIVE ASCENDING AORTA
2009
This study was undertaken to define the role of electrocardiographically (ECG)-gated multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in the assessment of the postoperative ascending aorta. From November 2006 to June 2007, 21 patients, [11 men, ten women; age +/- standard deviation (SD): 62.7 +/- 10.8 years] with a history of ascending aorta replacement underwent ECG-gated MDCT and were prospectively included in our study. Ascending aorta replacement had been performed with different surgical techniques: Bentall-De Bono (four patients, 19%), Tirone-David (five patients, 23%), and modified Tirone-David with creation of aortic neosinuses (12 patients, 57%). Two patients were excluded from MDCT evalua…
Assessment of primary liver carcinomas other than hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with LI-RADS v2018: comparison of the LI-RADS target population to p…
2019
To determine whether the LI-RADS imaging features of primary liver carcinomas (PLCs) other than hepatocellular carcinoma (non-HCC PLCs) differ between patients considered high risk (RF+) versus not high risk (RF−) for HCC and to compare rates of miscategorization as probable or definite HCC between the RF+ and RF− populations. This retrospective study included all pathology-proven non-HCC PLCs imaged with liver-protocol CT or MRI from 2007 to 2017 at two liver transplant centers. Patients were defined per LI-RADS v2018 criteria as RF+ or RF−. Two independent, blinded readers (R1, R2) categorized 265 lesions using LI-RADS v2018. Logistic regression was utilized to assess for differences in i…
3D versus 2D contrast-enhanced sonography in the evaluation of therapeutic response of hepatocellular carcinoma after locoregional therapies: prelimi…
2014
Objective: To investigate diagnostic performance of 3D contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) compared with 2D CEUS in the assessment of therapeutic response of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with locoregional therapies (LRT). Materials and methods: Twenty-three consecutive patients (13 men and 10 women; mean age 65.5 years) with 23 HCCs (size range 1.2–7.2 cm; mean size 2.9 ± 1.4 cm) treated by means of radiofrequency ablation (RFA n = 9), transarterial chemoembolization (TACE n = 8), combined RFA and TACE (n = 3), percutaneous alcoholization (n = 2), and wedge resection (n = 1) underwent 2D and 3D CEUS 1 month (30 ± 2 days) after treatment. Magnetic resonance (n = 17) and computed to…
Local Tumor Control and Patient Outcome Using Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: iRECIST as a Potential Substitute for…
2019
Objective. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether, compared with traditional criteria, the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors version 1.1 for immune-based therapeutics (iRECIST) improves prediction of local tumor control and survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Materials and Methods. Fifty-one HCC lesions (mean size, 3.1 cm) treated with SBRT in 41 patients (mean age, 67 years) were retrospectively included. Each patient underwent CT or MRI before SBRT and at least once after SBRT. Best overall response was categorized using Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors version 1.1 (RECIS…
Hepatocellular cancer response to radiofrequency tumor ablation: contrast-enhanced ultrasound
2007
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is increasingly being used as percutaneous treatment of choice for patients with early stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). An accurate assessment of the RFA therapeutic response is of crucial importance, considering that a complete tumor ablation significantly increases patient survival, whereas residual unablated tumor calls for additional treatment. Imaging modalities play a pivotal role in accomplishing this task, but ultrasound (US) is not considered a reliable modality for the evaluation of the real extent of necrosis, even when color/power Doppler techniques are used. Recently, newer microbubble-based US contrast agents used in combination with grey-sca…
The influence of Albunex on the pulmonary circulation in patients with pulmonary hypertension or left heart failure.
1996
To determine the safety of the ultrasound contrast agent Albunex, its influence on right and left heart haemodynamics in patients with pulmonary artery hypertension or left heart failure was assessed after intravenous injection. Patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction smaller than 40% or a systolic pulmonary artery pressure greater than 40 mmHg received 0.08 and 0.22 ml.kg -1 Albunex and 10 ml albumin in random order during right heart catheterization and transthoracic echocardiography. Right atrial, systolic and diastolic pulmonary artery and capillary wedge pressures were measured at 3 min and 5 min and cardiac output at 5 min after the intravenous injection of Albunex and cont…
New iPAD-based test for the detection of color vision deficiencies.
2018
Purpose: To develop and validate a new iPad-based color vision test (Optopad). Methods: A total of 341 student eyes were enrolled in a first comparative study between Optopad and the Isihara tests. In a second comparative study, Optopad vs. the Farnworth-Munsell test (FM 100H), a total of 66 adult eyes were included. Besides the agreement between tests, the correlation between FM 100H and Optopad outcomes were investigated. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict the total error score (TES) from contrast thresholds measured with the Optopad test. Results: The Ishihara and Optopad tests detected the same anomalous patients. Concerning FM 100H vs. Optopad, 10 subjects were diagnosed …
Diabetes and Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease
2000
The purpose of this study was to compare contrast-enhanced three-dimensional MR angiography with conventional digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for identifying and evaluating arteries of the distal calf and foot in diabetic patients with severe arterial occlusive disease who will undergo distal bypass surgery.Twenty-four feet of 24 consecutive patients with diabetes and limb-threatening lower extremity ischemia were prospectively imaged using an ultrafast three-dimensional fast low-angle shot sequence on a 1.5-T MR scanner. All patients also underwent DSA of the diseased extremity within 5 days. Images were interpreted in a randomized manner by two observers in conference. Each lower ex…
Giant area of transient hepatic attenuation difference, mimicking incidentaloma at liver ultrasound.
2010
Concurrent with recent advances in diagnostic imaging techniques, the incidental finding of liver tumors, or incidentalomas, is increasing in asymptomatic and healthy individuals [1]. A 56-year-old healthy man underwent an abdomen ultrasound for a clinical check-up. A diffuse bright liver echo-pattern (indicating a low-moderate grade steatosis) and an unusual image (diameter approximately 10 cm) in the VI–VII hepatic segment, characterized by a massive giant hypoechoic lesion with poorly defined margins and a near rounded hyperechoic area (diameter about 4 cm) in the context were found (Fig. 1). The ultrasonographer suspected an angioma as first diagnostic hypothesis; however the large hypo…
