A Composite Phononic Crystal Design for Quasiparticle Lifetime Enhancement in Kinetic Inductance Detectors
2020
A nanoscale phononic crystal filter (reflector) is designed for a kinetic inductance detector where the reflection band is matched to the quasiparticle recombination phonons with the aim to increase quasiparticle lifetime in the superconducting resonator. The inductor is enclosed by a 1-μm-wide phononic crystal membrane section with two simple hole patterns that each contain a partial spectral gap for various high-frequency phonon modes. The phononic crystal is narrow enough for low-frequency thermal phonons to propagate unimpeded. With 3D phonon scattering simulation over a 40 dB attenuation in transmitted power is found for the crystal, which is estimated to give a lifetime enhancement of…
Chapter 20 Multiple messenger candidates and marker substances in the mammalian Merkel cell – axon complex: a light and electron microscopic immunohi…
1988
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses multiple messenger candidates and marker substances in the mammalian merkel cell—axon complex. According to the APUD theory, cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system (DNES) are essentially characterized by containing amines, peptides and marker substances like neuronspecific enolase (NSE) and chromogranin A (CGA). By the comparison of the histotopography of immunostained peptides, CGA and neuroendocrine markers, there was an expectation to find out the most appropriate immunohistochemical marker of the Merkel cell and to get further insight into the complex chemo-anatomy and possible functional spectrum of the Merkel cell -axon complex at various d…
The LANN technique to reduce postoperative functional morbidity in laparoscopic radical pelvic surgery
2005
BACKGROUND: We investigated the feasibility and advantages of introducing Laparoscopic Neuro-Navigation (LANN) into the field of laparoscopic gynecologic radical pelvic surgery. STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective pilot study, 261 consecutive patients underwent laparoscopic radical pelvic surgery for cervical cancer or deep infiltrating endometriosis of the parametria. During the procedure, dissection and electrostimulation, and consequently, sparing of the pelvic parasympathetic nerves by transection of the parametria, were performed. Postoperative bladder dysfunction was documented. RESULTS: Laparoscopic dissection and electrostimulation of the pelvic splanchnic nerves were feasible in all pat…
Histologic analysis of specimens from laparoscopic endometrioma excision performed by different surgeons: does the surgeon matter?
2011
Objective To evaluate whether the amount of ovarian tissue inadvertently removed along with the endometrioma cyst wall at laparoscopy differs in relation to the operating surgeon's level of expertise. Design Multicenter, prospective trial. Setting Four tertiary care university hospitals. Patient(s) Fifty patients, aged 25 to 40 years, with monolateral ovarian endometriomas who underwent laparoscopic excision. Intervention(s) Operation with the stripping technique by surgeons with specific expertise in endometriosis surgery in four centers (groups A, B, C, and D) and by residents with average training in laparoscopic surgery (group E). Main Outcome Measure(s) Histologic examination for the e…
Colorectal infiltrating deep endometriosis: Laparoscopic treatment. A case report
2022
Endometriosis is a disease affecting approximately 10% of women of fertile age. A particular presentation is deep infiltrating endometriosis of the rectosigmoid colon with symptoms that can mimic an intestinal obstruction or neoplasm. We report the case of a 39-year-old woman with pelvic pain during the menstrual cycle and significant anemia who presented an ectopic endometrial tissue in correspondence of the rectum. Because of the thickness of the lesion the patient underwent a segmental laparoscopic colorectal resection with end-to-end anastomosis.
Impact of biliary stents on the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy of solid pancreatic head lesions: A multicenter study
2021
Background and Objectives: There is no clear evidence of a negative impact of biliary stents on the diagnostic yield of EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) for diagnosing pancreatic head lesions. We aimed to evaluate the association between the presence of biliary stents and the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNB. Materials and Methods: A multicenter retrospective study including all jaundiced patients secondary to pancreatic head masses was performed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of a biliary stent placed before EUS-FNB. Pathological results were classified according to the Papanicolaou classification and compared against the final diagnosis. Diagnostic m…
Sialoendoscopy: state of the art, challenges and further perspectives. Round Table, 101st SIO National Congress, Catania 2014
2015
This draft of the Official Round Table held during the 101(st) SIO National Congress is an updated review on sialoendoscopy, a technique used for diagnosis and treatment of obstructive pathologies of salivary glands in a minimally invasive fashion. This review treats many aspects of salivary gland endoscopy, starting from anatomy to deal with the more advanced surgical techniques and analyses the main decisional algorithms proposed in the literature. In addition, particular attention was directed to the current limitations of this technique and to the potential developments that sialoendoscopy could have in the near future.Questo testo è un estratto della Tavola Rotonda Istituzionale tenuta…
Topological surface wave metamaterials for robust vibration attenuation and energy harvesting
2021
International audience; We propose topological metamaterials working in Hertz frequency range, constituted of concrete pillars on the soil ground in a honeycomb lattice. Based on the analog of the quantum valley Hall effect, a non-trivial bandgap is formed by breaking the inversion symmetry of the unit cell. A topological interface is created between two different crystal phases whose robustness against various defects and disorders is quantitatively analyzed. Finally, we take advantage of the robust and compact topological edge state for designing a harvesting energy device. The results demonstrate the functionality of the proposed structure for both robust surface vibration reduction and …
Improving nanoscale terahertz field localization by means of sharply tapered resonant nanoantennas
2020
Abstract Terahertz resonant nanoantennas have recently become a key tool to investigate otherwise inaccessible interactions of such long-wavelength radiation with nano-matter. Because of their high-aspect-ratio rod-shaped geometry, resonant nanoantennas suffer from severe loss, which ultimately limits their field localization performance. Here we show, via a quasi-analytical model, numerical simulations, and experimental evidence, that a proper tapering of such nanostructures relaxes their overall loss, leading to an augmented local field enhancement and a significantly reduced resonator mode volume. Our findings, which can also be extended to more complex geometries and higher frequencies,…
