Fast redox-triggered shuttling motions in a copper rotaxane based on a phenanthroline–terpyridine conjugate

Fast shuttling motions in solution have been observed by cyclic voltammetry in a Cu(I/II)-based [2] rotaxane. In the reported system, the different coordination preferences of both copper oxidation states are exploited to promote the electrochemically-triggered gliding of the ring from a tetra to a pentacoordinated site and vice versa. The thread of this rotaxane consists of a tridentate 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine chelating unit directly bonded through its 5-position to the 3-position of the bidentate 1,10-phenanthroline unit. This distribution reduces to a minimum the distance between the two coordination sites and lessens the congestion around the tetrahedral environment. These two factors h…

Abstract A novel series of copper(II) complexes of formula [Cu(tren)(mpda)](ClO4)2 · 1/2H2O (1), [Cu2(tren)2(mpda)](ClO4)4 · 2H2O (2), and [Cu2(tren)2(ppda)](ClO4)4 · 2H2O (3) containing the tetradentate tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) terminal ligand and the potentially bridging 1,n-phenylenediamine [n = 3 (mpda) and 4 (ppda)] ligand have been prepared and spectroscopically characterized. Abstract Ternary copper(II) complexes [Cu(NST)2(phen)] (1) and [Cu(NST)2(NH3)2]·H2O (2) [HNST = N-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)naphthalene-1-sulfonamide] were prepared and characterized by physico-chemical techniques. Both 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structures show the presence of a distorted square planar CuN4 geometry in which the deprotonated sulfonamide, acting as monodentate ligand, binds to the metal ion through the thiazole N atom. Both complexes present intermolecular π–π stacking interactions between phenanthroline rings (compound 1) and between naphthalene rings (compound 2). Abstract This paper reports the synthesis, X-ray structure and magnetic characterization of [Cu2(HBIMAM)2(C4O4)3(H2O)2]n·2nH2O [BIMAM = bis(imidazol-2-yl)methylamino methane]. This compound is made of infinite chains – running along the [1 1 0] direction – with copper ions bridged by μ1,3-squarato ligands. Furthermore, these chains are further cross-linked through additional squarate anions (with the same μ1,3-bis(monodentate) bridging mode) to generate two-dimensional sheets parallel to the ab plane. Two new metal complexes of formula {[Co(Hpcpa)(H2O)3]n� 3/2nH2O} (1) and [Cu2(MeHpcpa)4(MeOH)2] � H2O� 3.68 MeOH (2 )[ H 3pcpa = N-(4-carboxyphenyl)oxamic acid and MeH2pcpa = methyl ester derivative of H3pcpa] have been synthesized and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction. 1 is a neutral zigzag chain of cobalt(II) ions bridged by Hpcpa 2� ligands exhibiting the bidentate/monodentate coordination mode. A discrete dicopper(II) system, [Cu(bipy)(H2mpba)]2·2H2O (1), and its isomeric chain, [Cu(bipy)(H2mpba)]·dmso (2) [bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine and H4mpba = N,N′-1,3-phenylenebis(oxamic acid)], were obtained by modifying the ratio of the H2O–dmso solvent mixture, and their interconversion was also monitored by changing the solvents during the synthesis. The solvents play an essential role in the formation and crystallization of these complexes, presenting different dimensionalities and connectivities. Two polynuclear copper(II)−squarate compounds of formulas [Cu(HBIP)(BIP)](C4O4)1/2·2H2O (1) and [{Cu(BIP)(OH2)}4(μ-C4O4)](ClO4)2·4H2O (2) (HBIP = 3,3-bis(2-imidazolyl)propionic acid) have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
