The Institutionalization of Political Risk Assessment by Chinese Multinational Firms
2021
Some researchers have claimed that Chinese firms are impervious to political risk, calling into question the institutionalization of political risk by Chinese firms. Building on resource dependence theory and the literature on non-market strategies, this study finds significant impact by ownership structure, firm scale, and the degree of internationalization on the institutionalization of political risk assessments (IPRA) by Chinese firms. As such, state-owned firms and larger firms cultivate a higher level of IPRA. We find a positive impact of a firm’s scale and scope of internationalization, but insignificant impact of depth of internationalization.

The purpose of this article is to find new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approaches for corporate-community relationships in the global South and hence to achieve some distance from the Northern ethos. First, Veracel’s production impacts on the Indigenous community, the Pataxó Indians, are examined. Second, Veracel’s CSR policy and its subsequent impact are brought under closer scrutiny by juxtaposing corporate words with corporate actions.…

Here this paper rectifies this omission by putting together studies from economics, geography, knowledge management and employment studies. It is the authors’ view that quantitative studies of retail productivity should focus on total factor productivity in retailing as the resul…

Investigates the globalization of franchising through a discussion of the literature on innovation diffusion. Proceeds then to evaluate the globalization of format franchising in 31 countries, drawing data from Arthur Andersen’s multi‐national study. Finds that the USA has the greatest number of franchisors and franchisees, Japan seems to have a different franchise structure when compared to the other countries studied, and Israel is a franchising novice. Presents a number of tables, accompanied by notes of caution on analysing the statistics. Mentions briefly some examples of franchises. Refers the findings back to the literature review to assess how well they match the theoretical descrip…
