Electronic structure and magnetic order in Cu Zn(1−)O: A study GGA and GGA + U
2019
Abstract Based on density functional theory within GGA formalism, first-principles calculations were performed in order to study the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Cu-doped ZnO compound with dopant concentrations x = 0.028, 0.042, 0.056, and 0.125. It was found that CuxZn(1−x)O is ferromagnetic for both the closest and farthest impurity distances, but it is more stable energetically for the closest one. For all concentrations we obtained nearly half − metallic behavior. The calculations show that two substitutional Cu atoms introduce a magnetic moment of about 2.0 μB for all dopant concentrations. The results indicate that the magnetic ground state originates from the st…
High temperature oxidation of Mg2(Si-Sn)
2016
Abstract High temperature oxidation of Mg 2 Si 1- x Sn x alloys ( x = 0.1 0.6) has been investigated. The oxidation rate was slow for temperatures below 430 °C. In the temperature range between 430500 °C all the alloys exhibited breakaway oxidation. The onset temperature of the breakaway region in general decreased with increasing level of Sn in the alloy. The breakaway behavior is explained by a combination of the formation of a non-protective MgO layer and the formation of Sn-rich liquid at the interface between the oxide and Mg depleted Mg 2 Sn.
Effect of surface finishing on the oxidation behaviour of a ferritic stainless steel
2017
Abstract The corrosion behaviour and the oxidation mechanism of a ferritic stainless steel, K41X (AISI 441), were evaluated at 800 °C in water vapour hydrogen enriched atmosphere. Mirror polished samples were compared to as-rolled K41X material. Two different oxidation behaviours were observed depending on the surface finishing: a protective double (Cr,Mn) 3 O 4 /Cr 2 O 3 scale formed on the polished samples whereas external Fe 3 O 4 and (Cr,Fe) 2 O 3 oxides grew on the raw steel. Moreover, isotopic marker experiments combined with SIMS analyses revealed different growth mechanisms. The influence of surface finishing on the corrosion products and growth mechanisms was apprehended by means o…
Wear and corrosion resistant performance of thermal-sprayed Fe-based amorphous coatings: A review
2019
Abstract Thermal sprayed Fe-based amorphous coatings exhibit excellent wear and corrosion resistance, and thus have been widely utilized for enhancing the performance of material surfaces. In this paper, important research progresses achieved in regards to deposition technologies and properties of thermal sprayed Fe-based amorphous coatings are reviewed. In particular, the dependence of wear and corrosion resistance of the coatings on processing parameters, e.g., kinetic energy, particle size, gas flow rate, and heat treatment temperature are summarized. Moreover, the utilization of reinforced phases and alloy elements for enhancing the wear and corrosion resistance of the coatings are pres…
Low-temperature luminescence of CdI2 under synchrotron radiation
2020
Synchrotron radiation is applied to study visible and UV luminescence spectra and their excitation spectra of undoped as well as In and Sb doped cadmium iodide crystals at 10 K. The origin of principal luminescence bands and the role of impurities in the formation of emission centers are discussed. The luminescence properties have been explained based on the electronic structure of CdI2 crystals.
Corrosion of Welded Metal Structures of Mining Equipment
2018
Mining equipment made of welded metal structures is strongly affected by the corrosion phenomenon due to the working conditions. Initial research has shown that the corrosion phenomenon is most pronounced in the area of cross-welded joints and welded T-shaped joints. In the researches, there was made a chemical analysis of the welded construction material used respectively of the new material and it was observed a reduction in carbon concentration in the material used, but also a substantial increase in the sulfur concentration compared to the new material. The pronounced corrosion of the metallic structure is influenced by the chemical composition change because the sulfur is a grafitizin…
Half-Heusler compounds: novel materials for energy and spintronic applications
2012
Half-Heusler compounds are an impressive class of materials with a huge potential for different applications such as future energy applications and for spintronics. The semiconducting Heusler compounds can be identified by the number of valence electrons. The band gap can be tuned between 0 and 4 eV by the electronegativity difference of the constituents. Magnetism can be introduced in these compounds by using rare-earth elements, manganese or ‘electron’ doping. Thus, there is a great interest in the fields of thermoelectrics, solar cells and diluted magnetic semiconductors. The combination of different properties such as superconductivity and topological edge states leads to new multifunct…

A comparative study on the compatibility of liquid lead–gold eutectic and liquid lead–bismuth eutectic with T91 and SS 316LN steels
2012
Abstract Liquid lead–gold eutectic (LGE) is considered as a potential target material for high power spallation sources. In the present work, the corrosion effects of LGE on T91 and SS 316LN steels have been investigated in comparison with that of liquid lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) under the same testing conditions. Two tests were conducted at 400 °C for 1800 h and at 450 °C for 1300 h, in which specimens of the two steels were exposed to 1 m/s flowing LGE and LBE. Surface inspections showed that the specimens underwent a mixed corrosion mode of dissolution and oxidation. The results obtained from the SS 316LN specimens are very interesting. Firstly, EDX (electron energy dispersion X-ray sp…
Effect of nanostructure layout on spin pumping phenomena in antiferromagnet/nonmagnetic metal/ferromagnet multilayered stacks
2017
In this work we focus on magnetic relaxation in Mn80Ir20(12 nm)/Cu(6 nm)/Py(dF) antiferromagnet/Cu/ferromagnet (AFM/Cu/FM) multilayers with different thickness of the ferromagnetic permalloy layer. An effective FM-AFM interaction mediated via the conduction electrons in the nonmagnetic Cu spacer – the spin-pumping effect – is detected as an increase in the linewidth of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra and a shift of the resonant magnetic field. We further find experimentally that the spin-pumping-induced contribution to the linewidth is inversely proportional to the thickness of the Py layer. We show that this thickness dependence likely originates from the dissipative dynamics of …
