Band filling effect on polaron localization in La$_{1-x}($Ca$_y$Sr$_{1-y}$)$_{x}$MnO$_3$ manganites
2013
We report on an a $\mu$SR and $^{55}$Mn NMR investigation of the magnetic order parameter as a function of temperature in the optimally doped La$_{5/8}$(Ca$_y$Sr$_{1-y}$)$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$ and in the underdoped La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$ metallic manganite families. The study is aimed at unraveling the effect of lattice distortions, implicitly controlled by the Ca-Sr isoelectronic substitution, from that of hole doping $x$ on the Curie temperature $T_c$ and the order of the magnetic transition. At optimal doping, the transitions are second order at all $y$ values, including the $y=1$ (La$_{5/8}$Ca$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$) end member. In contrast, they are first order in the…
Normal state electronic properties of LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ superconductors
2015
A good description of the electronic structure of BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors is essential to understand their phase diagram, normal state and superconducting properties. To describe the first reports of normal state electronic structure features from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$, we used a minimal microscopic model to study their low energy properties. It includes the two effective tight-binding bands proposed by Usui et al [Phys.Rev.B 86, 220501(R)(2012)], and we added moderate intra- and inter-orbital electron correlations related to Bi-($p_{Y}$, $p_{X}$) and S-($p_{Y}$, $p_{X}$) orbitals. We calculated the electron Green's function…
Comment on "Topological excitations and the dynamic structure factor of spin liquids on the kagome lattice" (Punk, M., Chowdhury, D. & Sachdev, S…
2014
The authors of a recent paper evidently take the view that the whole of progress made toward a theoretical understanding of the physics of quantum spin liquids (QSL) is associated with models of the kind proposed and applied in their present work. As motivation for this work, they observe that in contrast to existing theoretical models of both gapped and gapless spin liquids, which give rise to sharp dispersive features in the dynamic structure factor, the measured dynamic structure factor reveals an excitation continuum that is remarkably flat as a function of frequency. They go on to assert that "so far, the only theoretical model for a spin liquid state on the kagome lattice which natura…
The energy gap of intermediate-valent SmB6 studied by point-contact spectroscopy
2001
We have investigated the intermediate valence narrow-gap semiconductor SmB6 at low temperatures using both conventional spear-anvil type point contacts as well as mechanically controllable break junctions. The zero-bias conductance varied between less than 0.01 mikrosiemens and up to 1 mS. The position of the spectral anomalies, which are related to the different activation energies and band gaps of SmB6, did not depend on the the contact size. Two different regimes of charge transport could be distinguished: Contacts with large zero - bias conductance are in the diffusive Maxwell regime. They had spectra with only small non-linearities. Contacts with small zero - bias conductance are in th…
Raman and infrared studies of La_1-ySr_yMn_1-xM_xO_3 (M=Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Sc or Ga): Oxygen disorder and local vibrational modes
2005
We present results of our study of polarized Raman scattering and infrared reflectivity of rhombohedral ceramic La_1-ySr_yMn_1-xM_xO_3 manganites in the temperature range between 77 and 320K. In our samples, a part of the Mn atoms is substituted by M = Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Sc, or Ga with x in the range 0 -- 0.1. The hole concentration was kept at the optimal value of about 32% by tuning the Sr content y. We have monitored the distortions of the oxygen sublattice by the presence of broad bands in the Raman spectra, the increase of d.c. resistivity extracted from the infrared reflectivity, and the change of the critical temperature of the ferromagnetic transition. Our results support the idea, tha…
Magnetic order, metamagnetic transitions, and low-temperature spin freezing in Ca3Co2O6: an NMR study
2010
We report on a 59Co NMR investigation of the trigonal cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 carried out on a single crystal, providing precise determinations of the electric field gradient and chemical shift tensors, and of the internal magnetic fields at the non-magnetic Co I sites, unavailable from former studies on powders. The magnetic field-induced ferri- and ferromagnetic phases at intermediate temperature (e.g. 10 K) are identified by distinct internal fields, well accounted for by purely dipolar interactions. The vanishing transferred hyperfine field at the Co I site indicates that the Co3+(I) orbitals do not participate in the intra-chain superexchange, in disagreement with a previous theoretical mod…
Anomalous orbital moment in the ferromagnetic phase of the Sr4Ru3O10
2018
The coupling of spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the trilayer Sr4Ru3O10 sets a long-standing puzzle, due to the peculiar anisotropic coexistence of out-of-plane ferromagnetism and in-plane metamagnetism. Recently, the induced magnetic structure by in-plane applied fields has been investigated by means of spin-polarized neutron diffraction, which allowed to extract a substantial orbital component of the magnetic densities at Ru sites. It has been argued that the latter is at the origin of the evident layer dependent magnetic anisotropy, where the inner layers carry larger magnetic moments than the outer ones. We present a spin-polarized neutron diffraction study in order to characteriz…
Magnetic phase diagram of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CoO$_{4}$ revised using muon-spin relaxation
2015
We report the results of a muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) investigation of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CoO$_{4}$, an antiferromagnetic insulating series which has been shown to support charge ordered and magnetic stripe phases and an hourglass magnetic excitation spectrum. We present a revised magnetic phase diagram, which shows that the suppression of the magnetic ordering temperature is highly sensitive to small concentrations of holes. Distinct behavior within an intermediate $x$ range ($0.2 \leq x \lesssim 0.6$) suggests that the putative stripe ordered phase extends to lower $x$ than previously thought. Further charge doping ($0.67 \leq x \leq 0.9$) prevents magnetic ordering for $T \gtrsim 1.5~…
Stripe disorder and dynamics in the hole-doped antiferromagnetic insulator La5/3Sr1/3CoO4
2013
We report on an investigation into the dynamics of the stripe phase of La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, a material recently shown to have an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum. A combination of magnetic susceptibility, muon-spin relaxation and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements strongly suggest that the physics is determined by a disordered configuration of charge and spin stripes whose frustrated magnetic degrees of freedom are strongly dynamic at high temperature and which freeze out in a glassy manner as the temperature is lowered. Our results broadly confirm a recent theoretical prediction, but show that the charge quenching remains incomplete well below the charge ordering temperature and rev…
Intra-chain collinear magnetism and inter-chain magnetic phases in Cr3As3-K-based materials
2020
We perform a comparative study of the KCr3As3 and the K2Cr3As3 quasi 1D compounds, and show that the strong interplay between the lattice and the spin degrees of freedom promotes a new collinear ferrimagnetic ground state within the chains in presence of intrachain antiferromagnetic couplings. We propose that the interchain antiferromagnetic coupling in KCr3As3 plays a crucial role for the experimentally observed spin-glass phase with low critical temperature. In the same region of the parameter space, we predict K2Cr3As3 to be non-magnetic but on the verge of the magnetism, sustaining interchain ferromagnetic spin fluctuations while the intrachain spin fluctuations are antiferromagnetic.
