A Study of Bose-Einstein Correlations In e+e- Annihilation At 91 Gev

1992

This paper describes a study of Bose-Einstein correlations made using the ALEPH detector at LEP. The correlations are found to enhance the two particle differential cross section for pairs of identical pions by a factor which can be roughly parametrized by R(Q) = 1 + lambda exp(-Q2-sigma(2)), where Q is the difference in the 3-momenta of the two pions in their centre of mass frame, lambda = 0.51 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.11 and sigma = 3.3 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.8 GeV-1, which corresponds to a source size of 0.65 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.16 fm. The large systematic errors on these results reflect their strong dependence on the choice of the reference sample used in the analysis. This problem is believed to occur primari…

An estimate for the thermal photon rate from lattice QCD

2017

We estimate the production rate of photons by the quark-gluon plasma in lattice QCD. We propose a new correlation function which provides better control over the systematic uncertainty in estimating the photon production rate at photon momenta in the range {\pi}T/2 to 2{\pi}T. The relevant Euclidean vector current correlation functions are computed with $N_{\mathrm f}$ = 2 Wilson clover fermions in the chirally-symmetric phase. In order to estimate the photon rate, an ill-posed problem for the vector-channel spectral function must be regularized. We use both a direct model for the spectral function and a model-independent estimate from the Backus-Gilbert method to give an estimate for the p…

Light of Two Atoms in Free Space: Bunching or Antibunching?

2020

Photon statistics divides light sources into three different categories, characterized by bunched, antibunched, or uncorrelated photon arrival times. Single atoms, ions, molecules, or solid state emitters display antibunching of photons, while classical thermal sources exhibit photon bunching. Here we demonstrate a light source in free space, where the photon statistics depends on the direction of observation, undergoing a continuous crossover between photon bunching and antibunching. We employ two trapped ions, observe their fluorescence under continuous laser light excitation, and record spatially resolved the autocorrelation function ${g}^{(2)}(\ensuremath{\tau})$ with a movable Hanbury …

A theory for long-memory in supply and demand

2004

Recent empirical studies have demonstrated long-memory in the signs of orders to buy or sell in financial markets [2, 19]. We show how this can be caused by delays in market clearing. Under the common practice of order splitting, large orders are broken up into pieces and executed incrementally. If the size of such large orders is power law distributed, this gives rise to power law decaying autocorrelations in the signs of executed orders. More specifically, we show that if the cumulative distribution of large orders of volume v is proportional to v to the power -alpha and the size of executed orders is constant, the autocorrelation of order signs as a function of the lag tau is asymptotica…

The SVZ plasmon

1985

The sum rule technique of Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov is applied to a non-relativistic many-body system, the homogeneous, degenerate electron gas. The operator product expansion for the nonrelativistic correlation function is derived and shown to be equivalent in lowest order to a moment expansion. The nonperturbative terms in this expansion characterize the interacting ground state (“vacuum”) of the system. For the electron gas they can be related to the correlation energy which is very well known. Following as close as possible the SVZ procedure the mass of the plasmon (i.e. the dispersion coefficient of the collective plasma excitation) is calculated and compared with results from c…

The beta-, neutrino- and proton-asymmetry in neutron beta-decay

2004

This article describes measurements of angular-correlation coefficients in the decay of free neutrons with the superconducting spectrometer PERKEO II. A method for measuring the β-asymmetry coefficient A is presented, as well as a new method for determining the neutrino-asymmetry coefficient B, which allows a value for the proton-asymmetry coefficient C to be obtained for the first time. An ongoing experiment is trying to improve the accuracy of these quantities.

Dynamics of Non Classically Reproducible Entanglement

2008

We investigate when the quantum correlations of a bipartite system, under the influence of environments with memory, are not reproducible with certainty by a classical local hidden variable model. To this purpose, we compare the dynamics of a Bell inequality with that of entanglement, as measured by concurrence. We find time regions when Bell inequality is not violated even in correspondence to high values of concurrence (up to $\approx 0.8$). We also suggest that these results may be observed by adopting a modification of a recent experimental optical setup. These findings indicate that even highly entangled systems cannot be exploited with certainty in contexts where the non classical rep…

Imaging Trapped Ion Structures via Fluorescence Cross-Correlation Detection

2021

Cross-correlation signals are recorded from fluorescence photons scattered in free space off a trapped ion structure. The analysis of the signal allows for unambiguously revealing the spatial frequency, thus the distance, as well as the spatial alignment of the ions. For the case of two ions we obtain from the cross-correlations a spatial frequency ${f}_{\text{spatial}}=1490\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{2}_{\mathrm{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{8}_{\mathrm{syst}}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{rad}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, where the statistical uncertainty improves with the integrated number of correlation events as ${N}^{\ensuremath{-}0.51\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06}$. We independently deter…

Simulating quantum Brownian motion with single trapped ions

2004

We study the open system dynamics of a harmonic oscillator coupled with an artificially engineered reservoir. We single out the reservoir and system variables governing the passage between Lindblad type and non-Lindblad type dynamics of the reduced system's oscillator. We demonstrate the existence of conditions under which virtual exchanges of energy between system and reservoir take place. We propose to use a single trapped ion coupled to engineered reservoirs in order to simulate quantum Brownian motion.

Distributed correlations and information flows within a hybrid multipartite quantum-classical system

2015

Understanding the non-Markovian mechanisms underlying the revivals of quantum entanglement in the presence of classical environments is central in the theory of quantum information. Tentative interpretations have been given by either the role of the environment as a control device or the concept of hidden entanglement. We address this issue from an information-theoretic point of view. To this aim, we consider a paradigmatic tripartite system, already realized in the laboratory, made of two independent qubits and a random classical field locally interacting with one qubit alone. We study the dynamical relationship between the two-qubit entanglement and the genuine tripartite correlations of …
