Abstract The investigations on structure and micro-chemical composition of archaeological metal alloys are needed in archaeometry. The aim of this study is devoted both to acquire information about their provenance and production technology, and to improve our understanding about the corrosion processes. Coupling of electrochemical, electrogravimetric and surface analysis techniques to study dithiocarbamate/bronze interactions in chloride media

International audience; Interaction between ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (PDTC) and bronze in 30 g L-1 NaCl was investigated at several concentrations between 0.1 and 10 mM by means of various electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. Electrochemical measurements revealed a fast adsorption process of PDTC on Cu and Pb and the formation of a thick insulating and protective film with a high surface coverage. At high concentrations, PDTC prevents oxides formation. Surface analyses confirm PDTC adsorption on bronze mainly via interaction between sulphur atoms and Cu sites to form Cu I-PDTC complex.

Chronospeciation of uranium released in soil during a long-term DU shell weathering experiment.

Corrosion process was investigated of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition fragments buried for three years in aerobic soils continuously irrigated with water. The continuing corrosion process was triggered through formation of soluble uranyl oxyhydrate phases such as metaschoepite and becquerelite, which were identified by micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The soil was not amended by phosphates and, therefore, no uranyl phosphates were found as corrosion products on the DU surfaces by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Influence of an elastic stress on the conductivity of passive films

Abstract The electrochemical impedance was measured over a large range of frequency and under straining condition in sodium chloride solution. The Mott-Schottky analysis, performed at high frequency, appears as very useful method to study the effect of an elastic stress on the capacitance values. The results obtained indicate that the semi-conductive properties of passive films formed on a type 316 L stainless steel (SS) are not markedly modified by an elastic stress when applied after ageing. Droplet cell investigation of intergranular corrosion on AA2024

An original method combining a droplet cell with direct optical interrogation of the reverse side of a 50μm thick foil AA2024 has been tested to evaluate the possible analysis of the current during intergranular corrosion tests. The foil microstructure and the selected orientation were suitable for recording the current generated during the propagation in volume of a well-defined grain boundary trace. Investigation of corrosion defects in titanium by positron annihilation

Abstract The positron annihilation method was used to study the formation of defects in titanium samples during their corrosion in the vapor of a 3% HCl solution. In particular, the distribution of defects depending on the distance from the corroding surface and the impact of an external magnetic field on the concentration of vacancies forming during the corrosion of titanium layers close to the surface were determined.

Influence of bond deterioration on shear-flexure failure of prestressed girders with post-tensioned tendons

Internal prestressing with bonded tendons suffers corrosion of wires and bond deterioration due to the bad infill of grouted sheaths. Many bridge girders show this state through cracking, deflections and in the worst cases, sudden failures. In Italy these are common situations, and the internal tendon corrosion is among the major causes of bridge degradation and damage, especially for grouted post-tensioned tendons.
