Inhibition Probing on a Cut-Edge Electrode Machined from a Primer-Coated 2024-T3 Alloy

2013

Conventional corrosion protection of 2024-T3 alloys (AA2024T3) in aeronautic structures combines conversion coating with chromate-inhibited primer protected by a top-coat. In some cases this protection can break down after mechanical damage to the paint systems inducing a risk of localized corrosion if the release of inhibitors trapped in the primer does not reach a critical level. There is a need for developing computational models combining the inhibitor release and transport within and from the coating system andthecorrosioninhibitionprocess, toassistinthedesignofnewmultifunctionalcoatingsystems.Theinfluenceonthecorrosioninhibition of various parameters such inhibitor release rate, defect…

Modeling and numerical simulation of the propagation of pitting corrosion of iron in chlorinated medium : contribution to the evaluation of the durab…

2012

This study deals with the understanding of the mechanisms of pitting corrosion susceptible to occur on carbon steel selected for high level nuclear waste containers. Transport/reaction models have been developed in order to simulate, by finite element method, the propagation of a pit on iron in chlorinated medium. For conservative models, pit is activated by imposing a potential on metal. Thanks to different parametric studies (geometry, environment…) simulations have permitted to classify, by severity order, the factors responsible of the increase or the inhibition of the localized corrosion rate. Otherwise, experiments on occluded (called « lead-in-pencil ») electrodes confirm that confin…

The murine bronchopulmonary microcirculation in hapten-induced inflammation

2006

ObjectiveThe clinical observation of central bronchial artery hypertrophy in chronic lung inflammation suggests the possibility that the bronchial circulation may also participate in adaptive responses in peripheral lung inflammation.MethodsTo investigate the potential role of the bronchial microcirculation in peripheral lung inflammation, we developed a murine model of lung inflammation using the intratracheal instillation of the peptide-hapten trinitrophenol in presensitized mice.ResultsClinical parameters indicated a peak inflammatory response at 96 hours. Similarly, gross and microscopic evidence of inflammation was observed 96 hours after antigen instillation. Using a forced oscillatio…

Structural and functional evidence for the scaffolding effect of alveolar blood vessels

2017

A contribution of pulmonary blood distension to alveolar opening was first proposed more than 100 years ago. To investigate the contribution of blood distension to lung mechanics, we studied control mice (normal perfusion), mice after exsanguination (absent perfusion) and mice after varying degrees of parenchymal resection (supra-normal perfusion). On inflation, mean tracheal pressures were higher in the bloodless mouse (4.0α2.5 cmH2O); however, there was minimal difference between conditions on deflation (0.7α0.9 cmH2O). To separate the peripheral and central mechanical effects of blood volume, multi-frequency lung impedance data was fitted to the constant-phase model. The presence or abse…

Towards a Study of Effects on Hydrogen Diffusion into T40 Titanium Alloys

2015

In a global study of titanium alloys behavior in specific aqueous solution (embrittlement, corrosion and corrosion under stresses), the present work focuses on hydrogen diffusion into the metal and the consequences on its microstructure. Two ways of hydrogen charging were used to investigate this issue (gaseous and cathodic charging). The final aim is to determine a fitted method to create an identified microstructure and then to perform accelerated aging tests of titanium U-Bend samples into an autoclave with a specific environment. Hydrogen absorption and formation of titanium hydride have been studied by SEM analyses and by X-ray diffraction methods.

A Methodology to Deduce the Microstructural Spatial Deformation of Polycrystalline Structures: Application to the Alloy 600

2009

Studying the corrosion of the alloy 600, under water pressure, is of high importance to understand the ageing process of pressurized water reactors. Today, the impact of the oxide growth on the mechanical properties of nickel alloys is a challenge. The surface analysis and the quantification of the local deformation are key factors to deduce the surface damage of the substrate produced by corrosion. Here, we introduce a new methodology to determine the deformation distribution of the alloy 600 by using polycrystalline samples. The method is based on nanopads disposed on the surface samples, which allow a mapping, at the microscopic scale, of the spatial deformation. We applied to the sample…

The use of local electrochemical probes and surface analysis methods to study the electrochemical behaviour and pitting corrosion of stainless steels

2007

Abstract In this paper, the electrochemical microcell technique is combined with ex situ (SIMS and XPS) and in situ (SVET) techniques to study the electrochemical behaviour and pitting corrosion of inclusion-contaning stainless steels. Dissolution of metallurgical heterogeneities, depassivation and pitting mechanisms are first discussed in 1 M NaClO4, pH 3, and 1 M NaCl, pH 3, by considering the chemical composition and morphology of inclusions. The influence of the chemical composition of passive films on the electrochemical reactions and the microgalvanic coupling processes occurring at the corrosion potential is also investigated on the same specimen microstructure.

Safety assessment in N-M-V interaction of prestressed concrete elements subject to degradation of the reinforcements

2021

The estimation of residual life of viaducts and bridges is urgently topical, due to the age of Italian infrastructure network. Among the causes of reduced life of prestressed concrete structures, the role played by corrosion in prestressed reinforcements is fundamental. In fact, the reduction of the reinforcement cross-section with the formation of the outer layer of iron oxides and hydroxides and the bad filling of the ducts, induces an intermediate behaviour between that of external (unbonded) and internal (bonded) prestressing. For these reasons, the evaluation of degradation and its influence on structural safety cannot be neglected in the assessment of sections of existing structures c…

Degradation and rehabilitation of Gerber saddles of concrete bridges

2022

In recent decades, many concrete bridges, built in the 60s and 70s of the 20th Century with a Gerber-girder scheme, show severe damage of the saddles due to concrete degradation and reinforcement corrosion. On the basis of the recent Ministerial Guidelines for the assessment of existing bridges, it is necessary to evaluate the state of the Gerber saddles in a large number of bridges on both main and secondary roads. To do this, it is necessary to apply flexible assessment procedures that can be adapted to several situations and that allow a speedy assessment of the intervention priorities. The methodologies of intervention represent the crucial point for a rapid rehabilitation of these infr…
