Sulphate-reducing bacteria in paper machine waters and in suction roll perforations

To define some aspects of the biological corrosion sulphate-reducing bacteria were studied in paper machine waters and in plugged perforations of a suction roll. The desulphuricants were most active on passive fiber recipients. Most bacteria found in fiber plugs taken from the perforations of suction rolls belonged to the genus Desulfovibrio. Desulphuricants were found mainly at the outer ends of plugged perforations, where corrosion of the roll metal is most evident.

Background Fat grafting is a powerful tool for soft-tissue reconstruction; however, the science behind recipient bed preparation has not been thoroughly explored. External volume expansion using suction before fat grafting has been used clinically to improve reliability and consistency of graft survival. Many technologically relevant properties of metallic alloys are determined by the structure of their surfaces, especially in the field of catalysis and corrosion. One important aspect of a surface or grain boundaries is, that the stoichiometry of the alloy close to the surface normally differs from the bulk stoichiometry. Due to different interaction energies and different atom sizes of the components, one of them will get enriched at the surface, a phenomenon called surface segregation[1].

Hand verification for flexural strength of existing R.C. floors subject to degradation phenomena

Abstract In the present paper, a simplified model for hand verification of the flexural and shear strength of existing corroded T beams cast in place of lightened R.C. orthotropic slabs forming floors is presented and discussed. Diffused and pitting corrosion on steel bars, compressive concrete strength degradation and concrete bond strength degradation are included in the model. Multiscale modeling of polycrystalline materials: A boundary element approach to material degradation and fracture

Abstract In this work, a two-scale approach to degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is proposed. The formulation involves the engineering component level (macro-scale) and the material grain level (micro-scale). The macro-continuum is modeled using a three-dimensional boundary element formulation in which the presence of damage is formulated through an initial stress approach to account for the local softening in the neighborhood of points experiencing degradation at the micro-scale. Abstract Even though many studies have reported about the impacts of shape, length and distribution of steel fiber reinforcement on global concrete properties, there is a lack of information about the influence of coating type of steel fibers on high temperature resistance of concrete. This paper describes the effect of Cu-Zn coated steel fibers on selected properties of reactive powder concrete (RPC) after exposure to elevated temperatures. The initial corrosion of zinc in Cu-Zn surface layer is found to be already activated by the alkaline environment of the fresh concrete. Simulation of abrasion–corrosion at high temperatures by in situ pulsed laser spallation of oxide films

Abstract A pulsed Nd:YAG laser combined with a thermogravimetric cell has been used to spall in situ the oxide films grown on a Fe–2.25Cr–1Mo steel at high temperature in oxidizing media. This technique allows to define the oxidation rate of bare metal surfaces, which can be used to simulate the corrosion-dominated regime during slurry–erosion tests.

A ternary composite comprising of p-toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI), chitosan and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with stable aqueous dispersibility has been synthesised via oxidative polymerisation of aniline in chitosan/RGO dispersion. For comparison; PANI, PANI/chitosan and PANI/RGO composites were also synthesised using the same procedure. FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD and UV-VIS confirmed the successful synthesis of the PANI and the composites. The aqueous dispersions of the PANI/chitosan and the ternary composites were found to be stable even after more than four months.
