Afterglow Model for the Radio Emission from the Jetted Tidal Disruption Candidate Swift J1644+57

2011

The recent transient event Swift J1644+57 has been interpreted as emission from a collimated relativistic jet, powered by the sudden onset of accretion onto a supermassive black hole following the tidal disruption of a star. Here we model the radio-microwave emission as synchrotron radiation produced by the shock interaction between the jet and the gaseous circumnuclear medium (CNM). At early times after the onset of the jet (t < 5-10 days) a reverse shock propagates through and decelerates the ejecta, while at later times the outflow approaches the Blandford-McKee self-similar evolution (possibly modified by additional late energy injection). The achromatic break in the radio light curve o…

The TANAMI Program: Southern-Hemisphere AGN on (Sub-)parsec Scales

2013

The Southern Hemisphere VLBI monitoring program TANAMI provides dual-frequency (8 GHz and 22 GHz), milliarcsecond monitoring of extragalactic jets south of -30 degrees declination. The TANAMI sample consists of a combined radio and gamma-ray selected subsample of currently 80 AGN jets, with new gamma-ray bright sources being added upon detections by Fermi/LAT. Supporting programs provide simultaneous multiwavelength coverage of all sources, in order to construct broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of flaring and quiescence source states, as well as a rapid follow-up of high-energy flares. This combined setup allows us to continuously study the spectral and structural evolution of…

High-resolution monitoring of parsec-scale jets in the Fermi era

2012

I review here the present observational efforts to study parsec-scale radio jets in active galactic nuclei with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) as related to the new window to the Universe opened by the LAT instrument on-board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. I describe the goals and achievements of those radio studies, which aim to probe the emission properties, morphological changes and related kinematics, magnetic fields from the linear and circular polarization, etc., and I put those in the context of the radio--gamma-ray connection. Both statistical studies based on radio surveys and individual studies on selected sources are reported. Those should shed some light in the o…

VLBI studies of TANAMI radio galaxies

2016

Radio galaxies are relatively faint at $\gamma$-ray energies, where they make up only 1-2% of all AGN detected by Fermi-LAT. However, they offer a unique perspective to study the intrinsic properties of AGN jets. For this reason, the combination of $\gamma$-ray and multi-wavelength data with high-resolution VLBI monitoring is a powerful tool to tackle the basic unanswered questions about AGN jets. Here we present preliminary results from a sample study of radio galaxies in the Southern hemisphere observed by the TANAMI VLBI monitoring program. We obtain high-resolution maps at 8.4 and 22.3 GHz, and study the jet kinematics using multi-epoch data. We present a preliminary kinematic analysis …

The impact of red giant/AGB winds on AGN jet propagation

2017

Dense stellar winds may mass-load the jets of active galactic nuclei, although it is unclear what are the time and spatial scales in which the mixing takes place. We study the first steps of the interaction between jets and stellar winds, and also the scales at which the stellar wind may mix with the jet and mass-load it. We present a detailed two-dimensional simulation, including thermal cooling, of a bubble formed by the wind of a star. We also study the first interaction of the wind bubble with the jet using a three-dimensional simulation in which the star enters the jet. Stability analysis is carried out for the shocked wind structure, to evaluate the distances over which the jet-dragge…

On the improvement of cosmological neutrino mass bounds

2016

The most recent measurements of the temperature and low-multipole polarization anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from the Planck satellite, when combined with galaxy clustering data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) in the form of the full shape of the power spectrum, and with Baryon Acoustic Oscillation measurements, provide a $95\%$ confidence level (CL) upper bound on the sum of the three active neutrinos $\sum m _< 0.183$ eV, among the tightest neutrino mass bounds in the literature, to date, when the same datasets are taken into account. This very same data combination is able to set, at $\sim70\%$ CL, an upper limit on $\sum m _$ of $0.…

General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Accretion Disks Around Tilted Binary Black Holes of Unequal Mass

2023

We perform general relativistic simulations of magnetized, accreting disks onto spinning binary black holes (BHBHs) with different mass ratios (MRs). The magnitude of the individual BH spins are all $\chi= 0.26$ and lie either along the initial orbital plane or $45^\circ$ above it. We evolve these systems throughout the inspiral, merger and postmerger phases to identify the impact of the BH spins and the MR on any jet and their electromagnetic (EM) signatures. We find that incipient jets are launched from both BHs regardless of the MR and along the spin directions as long as the force-free parameter $B^2/(8\,\pi\rho_0)$ in the funnel and above their poles is larger than one. At large distan…

Prospects for the inference of inertial modes from hypermassive neutron stars with future gravitational-wave detectors

2023

Some recent, long-term numerical simulations of binary neutron star mergers have shown that the long-lived remnants produced in such mergers might be affected by convective instabilities. Those would trigger the excitation of inertial modes, providing a potential method to improve our understanding of the rotational and thermal properties of neutron stars through the analysis of the modes' imprint in the late post-merger gravitational-wave signal. In this paper we assess the detectability of those modes by injecting numerically generated post-merger waveforms into colored Gaussian noise of second-generation and future detectors. Signals are recovered using BayesWave, a Bayesian data-analysi…

Quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild black holes in projective invariant Chern-Simons modified gravity

2022

AbstractWe generalize the Chern-Simons modified gravity to the metric-affine case and impose projective invariance by supplementing the Pontryagin density with homothetic curvature terms which do not spoil topologicity. The latter is then broken by promoting the coupling of the Chern-Simons term to a (pseudo)-scalar field. The solutions for torsion and nonmetricity are derived perturbatively, showing that they can be iteratively obtained from the background fields. This allows us to describe the dynamics for the metric and the scalar field perturbations in a self-consistent way, and we apply the formalism to the study of quasinormal modes in a Schwarzschild black hole background. Unlike in …
