Increasing the levels of 2-phenylethyl acetate in wine through the use of a mixed culture of Hanseniaspora osmophila and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The impact of mixed cultures of Hanseniaspora osmophila and Saccharomyces cerevisiae with different initial yeast ratios on wine composition has been examined. The mixed culture significantly affected sugar consumption, the main enological parameters and ester concentrations, with the exception of glycerol, isoamyl acetate and diethyl succinate levels. Remarkably, in wines obtained with mixed cultures the concentration of 2-phenylethyl acetate was approximately 3- to 9-fold greater than that produced by S. cerevisiae pure culture. Early colonization of primary tomato roots, grown in vitro, by Pseudomonas fluorescens A6RI, introduced by seed bacterization, was monitored for 7 days in three different root zones (zone A, apex+elongation+young hairy zone; zone B, hairy zone; zone C, old hairy zone+collar). Bacterial quantification was assessed by enumeration of (i) colony forming units (cfu) after dilution plating and of (ii) total bacterial cells by flow cytometry. Copper compounds, widely used to control plant-pathogenic bacteria, have traditionally been employed against fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora. However, recent studies have shown that some phytopathogenic bacteria enter into the viable-but-nonculturable (VBNC) state in the presence of copper. To determine whether copper kills E. amylovora or induces the VBNC state, a mineral medium without copper or supplemented with 0.005, 0.01, or 0.05 mM Cu2+ was inoculated with 107 CFU/ml of this bacterium and monitored over 9 months. Sigma-fragmentability and the property SLD in C(K) spaces

Abstract We characterize two topological properties in Banach spaces of type C ( K ) , namely, being σ-fragmented by the norm metric and having a countable cover by sets of small local norm-diameter (briefly, the property norm-SLD). We apply our results to deduce that C p ( K ) is σ-fragmented by the norm metric when K belongs to a certain class of Rosenthal compacta as well as to characterize the property norm-SLD in C p ( K ) in case K is scattered.

When Paul Wolfskehl died in 1906, his will established a prize for the first mathematician who could supply a proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, or give a counterexample refuting it. The interest from this prize money was later used to bring world-renowned mathematicians to Gottingen to deliver a series of lectures. Hilbert was apparently very pleased with this arrangement, and once jested that the only thing that kept him from proving Fermat’s famous conjecture was the thought of killing the goose that laid these golden eggs.
