Target thickness dependence of the Be(p,xn) neutron energy spectrum
2014
We report on the current status of the analysis of an experiment performed at The Svedberg Laboratory, with the aim of investigating the produced neutron field by Be(p,xn) converters of three different thicknesses with a 30 MeV proton beam. The neutron energy spectra were measured with the Time of Flight technique using a BC-501 liquid scintillator with good n-γ Pulse Shape Discrimination properties, while the detected events were recorded simultaneously by two Data AcQuisition systems. In this paper, we present the experimental setup, the analysis technique and some preliminary results. AlFONS
Characterization of the global network of optical magnetometers to search for exotic physics (GNOME)
2018
The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers to search for Exotic physics (GNOME) is a network of geographically separated, time-synchronized, optically pumped atomic magnetometers that is being used to search for correlated transient signals heralding exotic physics. The GNOME is sensitive to nuclear- and electron-spin couplings to exotic fields from astrophysical sources such as compact dark-matter objects (for example, axion stars and domain walls). Properties of the GNOME sensors such as sensitivity, bandwidth, and noise characteristics are studied in the present work, and features of the network's operation (e.g., data acquisition, format, storage, and diagnostics) are described. Charac…
The AX-PET Concept: New Developments And Tomographic Imaging
2011
The Axial PET (AX-PET) concept proposes a novel detection geometry for PET, based on layers of long scintillating crystals axially aligned with the bore axis. Arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) strips are placed orthogonally and underneath the crystal layers; both crystals and strips are individually readout by G-APDs. The axial coordinate is obtained from the WLS signals by means of a Center-of-Gravity method combined with a cluster algorithm. This design allows spatial resolution and sensitivity to be decoupled and thus simultaneously optimized. In this work we present the latest results obtained with the 2-module AX-PET scanner prototype, which consists of 6 radial layers of 8 LYSO crys…
Readout of the UFFO Slewing Mirror Telescope to detect UV/optical photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts
2013
The Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) was proposed for rapid response to prompt UV/optical photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). The SMT is a key component of the Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO)-pathfinder, which will be launched aboard the Lomonosov spacecraft at the end of 2013. The SMT utilizes a motorized mirror that slews rapidly forward to its target within a second after triggering by an X-ray coded mask camera, which makes unnecessary a reorientation of the entire spacecraft. Subsequent measurement of the UV/optical is accomplished by a 10 cm aperture Ritchey-Chretien telescope and the focal plane detector of Intensified Charge-Coupled Device (ICCD). The ICCD is sensitive to UV/opt…
Online Data Reduction using Track and Vertex Reconstruction on GPUs for the Mu3e Experiment
2017
The Mu3e experiment searches for the lepton flavour violating decay μ + → e + e − e + , aiming to achieve a sensitivity of 2 · 10 −15 in its first phase and ultimately aspiring to a final sensitivity of 10 −16 . During the first phase of the experiment, a muon rate of ∼ 10 8 μ /s will be available, resulting in a data rate of ∼ 80 Gbit/s. The trigger-less readout system is based on optical links and switching FPGAs sending the complete detector data for a time slice to one node of the filter farm. A full online reconstruction is necessary to reduce the data rate to a manageable amount to be written to disk. Graphics processing units (GPUs) are used to fit tracks with a non-iterative 3D trac…
Design and implementation of electronics and data acquisition system for Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory
2013
The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) Pathfinder for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) consists of two telescopes. The UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) handles the detection and localization of GRBs, and the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) conducts the measurement of the UV/optical afterglow. UBAT is equipped with an X-ray detector, analog and digital signal readout electronics that detects X-rays from GRBs and determines the location. SMT is equipped with a stepping motor and the associated electronics to rotate the slewing mirror targeting the GRBs identified by UBAT. First the slewing mirror points to a GRB, then SMT obtains the optical image of the GRB using the intensified CCD an…
A compact system for high precision time measurements ( < 14 ps RMS) and integrated data acquisition for a large number of channels
2011
A high precision ( < 14 ps RMS time resolution) and high channel density ( ~ 256 channels) Time to Digital Converter (TDC) module (realized in FPGAs) with integrated DAQ is presented. The data is transported over up to 8 Gigabit-Ethernet or optical links with up to 3 Gb/s. Slow-Control information is transported over the same links. It can be attached directly to the detector, which allows the elimination of long cables and crate systems. The full 256 channel TDCs are expected to use approximately 30 W electrical power. The module size is 20 cm by 23 cm. Power is provided by a galvanically isolated 48 V low noise power supply. AddOn-boards adapt to the special needs of the detector to be re…
The Performance of Belle II Data Acquisition System in the First Physics Run
2019
The Belle II experiment is a new generation B-factory experiment at KEK in Japan aiming at the search for New Physics in a huge sample of B-meson dacays. The commissioning of the SuperKEKB accelerator was started in 2017 (Phase 1), and then a pilot run with outer detectors was performed in 2018 (Phase 2). From March this year, an operation with the full detector has been started for the physics data taking (Phase 3). The Belle II data acquisiton system (DAQ) is now fully working in the Phase 3 run. The system consists of the trigger timing distribution system, the common readout modules (COPPER) with the unified optical data link to the detector front end, the readout PCs and the network sw…
The exposure of the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory
2010
The Pierre Auger Observatory is a detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It consists of a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level and a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The ‘‘hybrid” detection mode combines the information from the two subsystems. We describe the determination of the hybrid exposure for events observed by the fluorescence telescopes in coincidence with at least one water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array. A detailed knowledge of the time dependence of the detection operations is crucial for an accurate evaluation of the exposure. We discuss the relevance of monitoring data coll…
